McIndoes Reservoir

McIndoe Falls is an unincorporated community within the town of Barnet, Vermont, in the United States. It is located in the southeastern corner of Barnet, along the Connecticut River, the state boundary with New Hampshire. A dam on the Connecticut River at the village forms the McIndoes Reservoir, which extends upstream to the village of Barnet. U.S. Route 5 passes north–south through the village. Interstate 91 bypasses the village to the west, with the nearest access being Exit 18 (Barnet), 3 miles (5 km) to the north. McIndoes Falls Road leads east from the center of the village across the Connecticut River to the town of Monroe, New Hampshire. The next river crossing upstream is 2 miles (3 km) to the north near Barnet village, and the next crossing downstream is 8 miles (13 km) south where U.S. Route 302 crosses between Wells River, Vermont, and Woodsville, New Hampshire. McIndoe Falls has a separate ZIP code (05050) from the rest of Barnet. McIndoe Falls was also referred to as McIndoes or McIndoes Falls. The historic McIndoes Academy building is in the village. An 1875 map shows McIndoes Falls. The post office established in 1885 was named McIndoes Falls.

McIndoes Academy is a historic school building on Main Street (United States Route 5) in the McIndoe Falls village of Barnet, Vermont. Built in 1853, it is a prominent local example of Greek Revival architecture, serving as a local high school until 1969. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 127, out of 1,663 in the entire town of Barnet. The village is in southeastern Caledonia County, along the southeast edge of the town of Barnet, sitting on the west bank of the Connecticut River. It is bordered to the southeast, across the river, by the town of Monroe, New Hampshire. Interstate 91 forms the northwest edge of the CDP, with access from Exit 18 (West Barnet Road). I-91 leads north 10 miles (16 km) to St. Johnsbury and south 50 miles (80 km) to White River Junction. U.S. Route 5 passes through the center of the village, paralleling I-91; it leads north 9 miles (14 km) to St. Johnsbury and south 11 miles (18 km) to Wells River.

The Caledonia-1 Representative District is a one-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Caledonia-1 District includes all of the Caledonia County towns of Barnet, Ryegate, and Waterford. As of the 2000 census, the state as a whole had a population of 608,827. As there are a total of 150 representatives, there were 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The one member Caledonia-1 District had a population of 3,944 in that same census, 2.83% below the state average.

The Barnet Center Historic District encompasses a small cluster of buildings and a cemetery, which make up the original town center of Barnet, Vermont. Located on Barnet Center Road, it includes the 1849 Presbyterian church, vestry, and two residences, built between 1790 and 1898, as well as the town's first cemetery and a c. 1915 toolshed. It was the first town in Vermont to be settled by direct immigration from Scotland. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Thresher Mill is a historic industrial facility on West Barnet Road in Barnet, Vermont. First developed in 1836, it was the last water-powered mill to operate on the Stevens River, lasting into the late 20th century. The property, which includes an original mill dam and a surviving 1872 mill building, as well as archaeological sites of other industrial buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It is now styled Ben's Mill, and is a local museum.

The Passumpsic River () is a 22.7-mile-long (36.5 km) tributary of the Connecticut River, in Vermont. Though primarily a Caledonia County river, it is the only river to flow through all three counties of the Northeast Kingdom.

Ticklenaked Pond is a lake in Caledonia County, Vermont, in the United States."Ticklenaked" is likely a corruption of the Native American (Indian) name. Historian John C. Huden wrote: It is very doubtful that this hilarious name is of Indian origin; if so, it is possibly a much modified Delaware word meaning "beaver kittens here."
