Hawkins is a city in Wood County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,274 at the 2020 census. It is located twenty miles north of the larger city of Tyler. Just east of the community is Jarvis Christian University, a historically black institution of higher learning.

The Florence Robinson Cottage, also known as the Florence Robinson Building and the Alumni Heritage House, is a structure on the National Register of Historic Places located in Wood County, Texas on the campus of Jarvis Christian University outside Hawkins, Texas. The cottage is in the Modern Movement Style. Constructed in 1939-1941 and remodeled in 1976, the building is the only structure on the campus remaining from the eleven year presidency of Peter Clarence Washington at the institution. The building became the Alumni Heritage House in 1976. It was nominated for placement on the National Register of Historic Places in April, 2000, and installed on the registry in May of that year.

Jarvis Christian University (JCU) is a private historically black Christian college in Wood County, Texas. It was founded in 1912. It had a total undergraduate enrollment of 867 in the fall of 2019. During the 2022-2023 academic year, Jarvis Christian College was renamed Jarvis Christian University and it began offering graduate programs the following year.

Winona is a city in Smith County, Texas, United States. Founded in 1870, its population was 623 at the 2020 U.S. census, up from 576 in 2010. It is part of the Tyler metropolitan statistical area.

Big Sandy is a town in Upshur County, Texas, United States. It lies west of the larger cities of Gladewater and Longview. As of the 2020 census, the town's population was 1,231. Big Sandy Lake is cut nearly in half by U.S. Highway 80, the main thoroughfare of the town. The Sabine River flows just south of Big Sandy. In the 19th century, Walters' Bluff Ferry operated on the Sabine, with passage across costing 40 cents per person and up to 75 cents for wagons.

Big Sandy High School is a public high school located in Big Sandy, Texas and classified as a 2A school by the UIL. It is part of the Big Sandy Independent School District in southwestern Upshur County, Texas In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.
