Rijeka ( ree-EH-kə ree-AY-kə, also US: ree-YEH-kə, Croatian pronunciation: [rijěːka] (listen); also known as Fiume Hungarian: Fiume, Italian: Fiume [ˈfjuːme]; local Chakavian: Reka; German: Sankt Veit am Flaum; Slovene: Reka) is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia (after Zagreb and Split). It is located in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and in 2021 had a population of 108,622 inhabitants. Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially between the Holy Roman Empire, Italy and Croatia, changing rulers and demographics many times over centuries. According to the 2011 census data, the majority of its citizens are Croats, along with small numbers of Serbs, Bosniaks and Italians. Rijeka is the main city and county seat of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The city's economy largely depends on shipbuilding (shipyards "3. Maj" and "Viktor Lenac Shipyard") and maritime transport. Rijeka hosts the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc, first built in 1765, as well as the University of Rijeka, founded in 1973 but with roots dating back to 1632 and the local Jesuit School of Theology.Apart from Croatian and Italian, linguistically the city is home to its own unique dialect of the Venetian language, Fiuman, with an estimated 20,000 speakers among the autochthonous Italians, Croats and other minorities. Historically Fiuman served as the main lingua franca among the many ethnicities inhabiting the multi-ethnic port city. In certain suburbs of the modern extended municipality the autochthonous population still speaks Chakavian, a dialect of Croatian. In 2016, Rijeka was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2020, alongside Galway, Ireland.

Novi list (lit. 'New paper') is the oldest Croatian daily newspaper published in Rijeka. It is read mostly in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County of Croatia, but it is distributed throughout the country. Novi list had the distinction of being the only Croatian daily newspaper which kept a critical distance from the government of Franjo Tuđman during the 1990s. Up to the recent times, it was considered a centre-left newspaper, while in the last couple of years, after acquisition by the Slovakian JOJ Media House, it shifted its position to represent centre-right values, and became the only major Croatian newspaper which is very uncritical towards the last few Croatian government cabinets held by conservatives.

The Rijeka Synagogue (Croatian: Riječka sinagoga), also called the Great Synagogue of Rijeka, was a former Neolog Jewish synagogue, located in Rijeka, Croatia. Completed in 1903, the synagogue served as the main synagogue of the city until it was destroyed by Nazis in 1944.

Italian Secondary School in Rijeka (Croatian: Srednja talijanska škola Rijeka; Italian: Scuola media superiore italiana Fiume) is a public high school in the city of Rijeka, Croatia. The school was established in 1888 and been in operation continuously since then. The school building is protected as a cultural heritage. Building was renovated in the period from 2006 to 2008 with support of City of Rijeka and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.Students of the school were among the founders of the Olimpia sport club, that has over the years, became the most successful sport organization in Rijeka.

The 1995 Rijeka bombing occurred on 20 October 1995 in Rijeka, Croatia, when an Islamic terrorist organization attempted to destroy a police station by driving a car with a bomb into the wall of the building. Twenty-seven employees in the police station and two bystanders on the street were injured, although the only person killed was the attacker.

The Church of St. Nicholas (Serbo-Croatian: Crkva svetog Nikole / Црква светог Николе) is a Serbian Orthodox church in Rijeka, Croatia. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The building of the church was completed in 1790.

The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Rijeka (Croatian: Riječka nadbiskupija i Metropolita; Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Fluminensis) is a Latin Catholic Metropolitan archdiocese in Croatia. Its episcopal seat is Rijeka Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Vitus (Croatian: Katedrala Sv. Vida), in the city of Rijeka. Other major churches include the former cathedral, dedicated to Saints Philip and James (Croatian: Crkva sv. Filipa i Jakova), located in nearby Novi Vinodolski, and a minor basilica, the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin (Croatian: Bazilika Blažene Djevice Marije), in the suburb of Trsat.

The St. Vitus Cathedral (Croatian: Katedrala Svetog Vida) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Rijeka, Croatia. In the Middle Ages, the Church of St. Vitus was a small and one-sided, Romanesque church dedicated to the patron saint and protector of Rijeka. It had a semi-circular apse behind the altar, and covered porch. With the arrival of the Jesuits in Rijeka, the cathedral as we see it today was founded in 1638. First, it became the Jesuits' church. When the town of Rijeka became the center of the diocese, and then in 1969 the center of the archbishopric and metropolit, the representative Jesuit's Church of St. Vitus became the Cathedral of Rijeka. The structure is a rotunda, which is unusual in this part of Europe, with elements of Baroque and Gothic, including fine baroque statuary inside. The cathedral was depicted on the reverse of the Croatian 100 kuna banknote, issued in 1993 and 2002.

The Rijeka Tunnel (Croatian: Riječki tunel), also called TunelRi, is a pedestrian tunnel located in the city centre of Rijeka, Croatia. The tunnel spans 350 metres (1,150 ft) from St. Vitus Cathedral to Dolac Primary School in Old Town. It was originally built from 1939 to 1942 by the Italian military in order to protect civilians from Allied aerial bombings during World War II. In several places along the tunnel, one can still see the original "Riservato all U.N.P.A." ("Reserved for the Anti-aircraft Corps") signs.After being closed for 75 years, the tunnel was remodeled and opened to the public in 2017, serving as a tourist attraction and public passage. The tunnel has no entrance fee and is open for public access every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Palace Modello (Croatian: Palača Modello; Italian: Palazzo Modello) was built in 1885 in Rijeka, Croatia, on the place of the destroyed and demolished Adamichev (Croatian: Adamićev) theater. The palace was designed by the Viennese buro Fellner & Helmer led by Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer. Building commenced in 1883 and completed in 1885. The palace was built for the Rijeka Bank and cashboxes of the Savings Banks. The Palace Modello has luxurious facade. It is rich in decorative elements in the style of the late renaissance and baroque. Decorative items were maden by the sculptor Ignazio Donegani.Modelo Palace is situated within sight of the Croatian National Theatre in honor Ivan Zajc, which was built in 1885 by the Buro Fellner & Helmer to replace the destroyed Adamichev theater.Attractive gala hall, which is now an audience of Italian Cultural Club (Italian: Comunità degli italiani di Fiume), decorated with magnificent stucco.The public library of Rijeka city is currently operating on the ground floor.

The Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka (Croatian: Hrvatsko narodno kazalište Ivana pl. Zajca Rijeka. Italian: Teatro Nazionale Croato Ivan de Zajc), commonly referred to as HNK Zajc, is a theatre, opera and ballet house located in Rijeka.

The Rijeka Orthodox Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, located on Ivan Filipović Street, formerly Galvani Street (opposite the Faculty of Economics), in Rijeka in Croatia. The synagogue was built in a Rationalist style in 1931 (when Rijeka was part of Italy). It is one of the very few synagogues in Croatian territory to have survived the destruction of the Nazi period.
