TaskForceMajella (TFM) is an industry-funded geoscientific research project conducted between the years 1998 and 2005. The project involved numerous universities distributed worldwide, and was sponsored by a number of international major oil companies. The area of research was the Majella Mountain in Central Italy, regarded as an analogue of a faulted and fractured hydrocarbon reservoir as can be found in major provinces like the Middle East, Caspian Basin, Mediterranean Basin, and other areas. The scope was to obtain knowledge on the relation between fracture and fault generation, and all types of geological aspects of the evolution of the geological structure.

Cansano (pronounced [kansaˈno]; Canẓánə in Abruzzese Neapolitan) is a comune in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region, Southern Italy. It is part of the Maiella National Park. Cansano is known for the archaeological discovery of the Italic and Roman town of Ocriticum, which has become an archaeological park.

The Giardino Botanico Daniela Brescia (43,000 m2) is a botanical garden located in the Majella National Park (Parco Nazionale della Majella) at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level, Sant'Eufemia a Maiella, Abruzzo, Italy. It is open daily in the summer, and weekends otherwise. The garden was established in 2000, and now contains almost 500 species including Achillea oxyloba, Cerastium tomentosum, Cymbalaria pallida, Genziana dinarica, and other species typical of Mount Majella. It contains reproductions of several environments in the central Apennine Mountains, including high altitude cliffs and screes, and the Majella National Park Herbarium.

The Montagne del Morrone are a mountain group in Abruzzo, central Italy, part of the Apennines. Overlooking the town of Sulmona, they are bounded by the Valle Peligna, the river Aterno and the Majella massif. They are included into the Majella National Park. The range is composed of limestone, and have their highest peak in the Monte Morrone (2,061 m). Vegetation include typical Apennine woods of beech and mountain pine, as well as the rare orchid species Nigritella widderi. Wildlife include Marsican brown bear, italian wolf, mouflon, red deer, golden eagle, peregrine falcon, Eurasian eagle-owl and Ursini's viper. Until the early 20th century, the bearded vulture was also present. On a terrace of Mount Morrone are the remains of a Roman villa which allegedly belonged to the poet Ovid, which have been recently recognized as a sanctuary of Hercules Curinus. Here was found a small statue of Hercules resting, considered by some an original by Lysippos (now in the Archaeological Museum of Chieti). Nearby is the 13th century Morronese Abbey. In the mountain are also two caves in which the future Pope Celestine V lived his hermitage from 1239 and 1241.

Pettorano sul Gizio is a comune and town in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of central-southern Italy. The Gizio river flows in the communal territory. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy").

Castello Cantelmo (Italian for Cantelmo Castle) is a Middle Ages castle in Pettorano sul Gizio, province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, southern-central Italy.The castle, built around the 11th century, overlooks the Gizio river valley and the Valle Peligna. It has an irregular plan with cylindrical, massive towers at the north-western and south-western corners, while at south-eastern one are the remains of a quadrangular tower. In the middle is a pentagonal tower, which is the most ancient part of the castle.

Sulmona (Abruzzese: Sulmóne; Latin: Sulmo; Ancient Greek: Σουλμῶν, romanized: Soulmôn) is a comune (municipality) in the province of L'Aquila, in the Italian region of Abruzzo. It is located in the Valle Peligna, a plain once occupied by a lake that disappeared in prehistoric times. In the ancient era, it was one of the most important cities of the Paeligni and is known for being the native town of the Roman poet Ovid, of whom there is a bronze statue, located on the town's main road and named after him.

The Diocese of Sulmona-Valva (Latin: Dioecesis Sulmonensis-Valvensis) is a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in central Italy, in the Abruzzi region, approximately 120 km (75 mi) directly east of Rome. Corfinio (Valva) is 14 km north-northwest of Sulmona. The current configuration was created in 1986, through the union of the two dioceses into one. The combined single diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of L'Aquila. In 1818, the status of the Diocese of Sulmona and the Diocese of Valva was acknowledged, as two separate dioceses united in having one and the same person as bishop of both dioceses, aeque personaliter, an arrangement which stretched all the way back to the 13th century, and earlier.

Eremo di Sant'Onofrio al Morrone (Italian for Hermitage of Sant'Onofrio al Morrone) is an hermitage located in Sulmona, Province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo, Italy)., dating back to the thirteenth century. A monk by the name of Pietro Angelerio living at this hermitage later became Pope Celestine V. The hermitage is located at an altitude of 620 meters, and can only be reached via a steep path from the village of Badia, on the eastern edge of the Valle Peligna.

Sulmona Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Sulmona, Basilica Cattedrale di San Panfilo) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Sulmona, Italy, and is the seat of the Bishop of Sulmona-Valva (formerly of the Bishop of Sulmona).
