St David's Church (Eglwys Dewi Sant), Carmarthen

Carmarthen (, RP: ; Welsh: Caerfyrddin [kairˈvərðɪn], "Merlin's fort" or "Sea-town fort") is the county town of Carmarthenshire and a community in Wales, lying on the River Towy 8 miles (13 km) north of its estuary in Carmarthen Bay. The population was 14,185 in 2011, down from 15,854 in 2001, but gauged at 16,285 in 2019. It has a claim to be the oldest town in Wales – Old Carmarthen and New Carmarthen became one borough in 1546. It was the most populous borough in Wales in the 16th–18th centuries, described by William Camden as "chief citie of the country". Growth stagnated by the mid-19th century as new settlements developed in the South Wales Coalfield.

Christ Church is an Anglican parish church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1869 and is located at Friar's Park, Carmarthen. The parish church of Christ Church, Carmarthen was commenced by R. K. Penson in 1867. It was officially opened in September 1869, during the National Eisteddfod, by the Bishop of St David's, Connop Thirlwall. It was designed to be the English-language church for this expanding parish while Eglwys Dewi Sant, Carmarthen was designed to cater for Welsh-speaking parishioners. The organ was added in 1873 and renovations took place in 1891. The church has an unusual central tower with clasping buttresses and gables halfway up.The church was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981, being "a prominent mid-Victorian church with crossing tower, a landmark in distant views".

Carmarthen Town North and South (Welsh: Gogledd a De Tref Caerfyrddin) is an electoral ward for Carmarthenshire County Council in Carmarthen, Wales. It is represented by three county councillors. The ward was created following a boundary review by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales (LDBCW), with Carmarthen Town North merged with Carmarthen Town South, effective from the May 2022 local elections. The new ward saw an overall reduction in councillors for those parts of Carmarthen, from four to three. There was opposition to these changes from Carmarthen Town Council, who pointed out that the population of the town was growing, the new ward boundary was not easily identifiable and the ward included the businesses of Carmarthen town centre, which generated a lot of extra work for councillors.The ward stretches from the Carmarthen Showground in the west, to Glangwili Hospital in the east. It is centred on Carmarthen town centre, also including the areas of Llanllwch, Johnstown and Tanerdy. Carmarthen Town West ward covers the remaining northwest quadrant of Carmarthen. The electorate of this ward, according to the 2019 LDBCW report, was 6,623.

The Picton Monument in Carmarthen, Wales, is one of a number of memorials commemorating Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton. He was the highest ranking British officer to die at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Picton was from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. At the time of his death he had a property called Iscoed in Carmarthenshire. The current limestone monument, which is Grade II listed, was erected in 1847, replacing an earlier structure in the town, designed by John Nash, which was weathering badly.

The English Congregational Church, Carmarthen is a Congregational church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1861 and is located at 105, Lammas St, Carmarthen. The church was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981. The English Congregational Church in Carmarthen was built in 1861 by Poulton and Woodman, an experienced firm of chapel builders. It is similar to the Presbyterian church they built in Brecon in 1872. The English Congregational Church is rendered more conspicuous by being set at an angle to the street. It is built of rock-faced stone with Bath stone features and is in an exaggeratedly Gothic style. There are a lot of strange angles and junctions, a steep gable end with a tall window, a tower with spiral stair and a slender spire on an open bell platform. There are other strange features and by contrast, the interior is quite plain, with arch-braced roof trusses, and an organ recess with a pointed apse. The pulpit is polygonal and the single gallery has a front made from diagonally arranged boarding.The church was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981, being "a remarkably confident example of Gothic chapel architecture". Capel Heol Dŵr was a Calvinistic Methodist chapel in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1831 and is located at Water St, Carmarthen. It was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981.

Capel Heol Awst is an Independent Welsh chapel in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The present building dates from 1826 to 1827, replacing a 1726 building which itself had been enlarged in 1802 and again in 1826 to seat a congregation of 1000. It is located on Lammas Street (Heol Awst), Carmarthen. It was designated as a Grade II* listed building on 19 May 1981.

Carmarthenshire (; Welsh: Sir Gaerfyrddin [siːr gɑːɨrˈvərðɪn] or informally Sir Gâr) is a county in the south-west of Wales. The three largest towns are Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford. Carmarthen is the county town and administrative centre. The county is known as the "Garden of Wales" and is also home to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Carmarthenshire has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The county town was founded by the Romans, and the region was part of the Kingdom of Deheubarth in the High Middle Ages. After invasion by the Normans in the 12th and 13th centuries it was subjugated, along with other parts of Wales, by Edward I of England. There was further unrest in the early 15th century, when the Welsh rebelled under Owain Glyndŵr, and during the English Civil War. Carmarthenshire is mainly an agricultural county, apart from the southeastern part which was once heavily industrialised with coal mining, steel-making and tin-plating. In the north of the county, the woollen industry was very important in the 18th century. The economy depends on agriculture, forestry, fishing and tourism. West Wales was identified in 2014 as the worst-performing region in the United Kingdom along with the South Wales Valleys with the decline in its industrial base, and the low profitability of the livestock sector.Carmarthenshire, as a tourist destination, offers a wide range of outdoor activities. Much of the coast is fairly flat; it includes the Millennium Coastal Park, which extends for ten miles to the west of Llanelli; the National Wetlands Centre; a championship golf course; and the harbours of Burry Port and Pembrey. The sandy beaches at Llansteffan and Pendine are further west. Carmarthenshire has a number of medieval castles, hillforts and standing stones. The Dylan Thomas Boathouse is at Laugharne.

Moridunum was a Roman fort and town in the Roman province of Britannia. Today it is known as Carmarthen, located in the Welsh county of Carmarthenshire (formerly in the county of Dyfed).

The English Baptist Church is a Baptist church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1869 and is located at the street address 9 Dark Gate in Lammas Street. The church was designated a Grade II* listed building on 19 May 1981. The church is set back from the road in a courtyard where the Black Horse Inn had previously stood. It was built between 1869 and 1870 by the Carmarthen architect George Morgan, his first major undertaking. Records show that the church cost £1,400 to build. The façade is built in temple-style from Bath stone, with four tall columns supporting the portico. There is a flight of wide stone steps leading to the entrance. The interior has a single raked gallery, behind which is an arch with painted foliage and fluted decoration. The edge of the gallery is bounded by a cast iron band and is supported by cast iron columns. The lower parts of the walls are panelled and the original furnishings are still in place; the great seat has a simple balustrade. The organ has a purpose-built gallery but was not installed until 1887.The church was designated a Grade II* listed building on 19 May 1981, as "one of the most architecturally-ambitious classical chapels in Wales". Carmarthen Cemetery Chapel is a cemetery chapel in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1855 and is located at 6, Russell Terrace, Carmarthen. It was proposed in 1853 that two chapels should be built for the cemetery in Russell Terrace, Carmarthen, one for the burial of Anglicans and the other for Nonconformists. Tenders were received from three persons, James Wilson, R.K. Penson and W.W. Jenkins. At first Penson's bid was chosen, but after reconsideration, it was rejected and Jenkins received the contract. The two chapels were built as well as walls and entrance gates. Each chapel building was built of rubble stone, with ashlar dressings, and gabled roofs of slate and simple interiors. Bishop Thirlwall performed the opening ceremony in 1856, and afterwards the churchyard of St Peter's Church was closed to new burials. Since then, one of the chapels has been demolished, and the entrance gates have also gone.The chapel was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981, being an example of a fine "mid C19 cemetery chapel in Gothic style".
