Cefn Caves

The Bontnewydd palaeolithic site (Welsh: [bɔntˈnɛuɨ̯ð]), also known in its unmutated form as Pontnewydd (Welsh language: 'New bridge'), is an archaeological site near St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales. It is one of only three sites in Britain to have produced fossils of ancient species of humans (together with Boxgrove and Swanscombe) and the only one with fossils of a classic Neanderthal. It is located a few yards east of the River Elwy, near the hamlet of Bontnewydd, near Cefn Meiriadog, Denbighshire.

Gallfaenan Hall, also known as Alltvaynan, is a Grade II listed building near to Trefnant and Henllan in Denbighshire, Wales. The site was established by the 16th century, when a branch of the Salusbury family bought it from the Ravenscroft family and made it their seat. The direct line of the Salusbury branch ended in 1791 and the estate passed to a cousin's son, Colonel John Lloyd, on condition that he adopted the Salusbury arms and name. Following his marriage in 1810, the building was probably much altered, including by the construction of a Regency-style entrance that still exists.The house passed to the cousin's daughter, Anna Maria Salusbury, on his death. She married Townshend Mainwaring of Marchwiel Hall, who at various times was a Member of Parliament, Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff of Denbighshire. It was again remodelled in the 1860s, using designs by the Denbigh firm of Lloyd Williams and Underwood that included a galleried stair hall. The estate, which comprised 10,686 acres (4,324 ha) in 1873, was then inherited ones of their sons, Charles Salusbury Mainwaring, who in turn bequeathed it to Randle Kynaston Lloyd Salusbury Mainwaring.Gallfaenan next passed out of the Mainwaring family to Ernest Tate, the sugar magnate, in 1926. He arranged the construction of an additional wing designed by F. C. Saxon, with other interior work by Waring and Gillow.As of 2019, Galltfaenan was in use as a care home.

Wigfair Hall is a large country house standing in an elevated position above the River Elwy near the village of Cefn Meiriadog, Denbighshire, Wales. It is a Grade II* listed building.In 2017 Wigfair Hall was renovated and is now primarily used as a special event and wedding venue.

Bedd-y-Cawr Hillfort, or Bedd y Cawr Hillfort, is an Iron Age hillfort on a natural inland promontory in the community of Cefnmeiriadog in Denbighshire in North Wales. The name of the hillfort translates from the Welsh as Giant's Tomb. Bedd-y-Cawr Hillfort is a scheduled monument that lies approximately 3.3 kilometres (2.1 miles) west of St Asaph and 4.0 kilometres (2.5 miles) north of Henllan.

Henllan is a village and community in Denbighshire, Wales with a population of approximately 750 (OfNS/2004) and lies in the countryside, approximately 2.25 miles (3.5 km) north-west of the walled town of Denbigh. The name is Old Welsh, Hên-llan, meaning "old church-enclosure". The population had increased to 862 at the 2011 census.The Grade I listed country house, Foxhall Newydd, lies to the southeast. The country house retreat Eriviat Hall also lies outside the village. The Llindir Inn, reputed to be haunted, dates to the 13th century.

Cefn Meiriadog (sometimes Cefnmeriadog) is a rural community in Denbighshire, Wales, just south-west of the city of St Asaph. The boundary of the community on three sides is the river Elwy, which here forms the county boundary with Conwy County Borough. Arguably the largest settlement in the community is the hamlet of Bontnewydd. Also in the community are the hamlets of Groesffordd Marli where Ysgol Cefn Meiriadog is situated, and Cefn. The community is named for a small ridge of the same name (cefn in Welsh means "ridge"). It is said that the place was named for St Meiriadog, a 4th or 5th century Breton saint. Cefn Caves are nearby, where human and early Neanderthal remains dating back 250,000 years have been discovered. Visitors to the site have included Charles Darwin, in 1831. The site is known as Bontnewydd Palaeolithic site. There is a local spring, Ffynnon Fair ("St Mary's spring"), and it was once believed to have healing properties. The poet Siôn Tudur (1522 – 1602) lived at Plas Wigfair (GR028712) nearby.

Foxhall Newydd is a Grade I listed country house, roughly 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the southeast of Henllan, Denbighshire, north Wales. The house, planned in a symmetrical H-plan, commenced construction under John Panton of Denbigh in 1592. Though it was never finished and has now been in ruins for over 150 years, it is described by Cadw as "one of the most ambitious and sophisticated projects of Elizabethan house building in Wales". It became a Grade I listed building on 24 October 1950.

St Asaph City Football Club (Welsh: Clwb Pêl Droed Dinas Llanelwy) is a Welsh football team based in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales. They play in the Ardal NW, which is in the third tier of the Welsh football league system.

Trefnant is a village and community in Denbighshire, Wales. It is located on the A525 road in the Vale of Clwyd (Dyffryn Clwyd), about halfway between St Asaph (Llanelwy) to the north and Denbigh to the south. At the 2001 Census, the community had a population of 1,409, increasing to 1,581 at the 2011 Census.Holy Trinity Church, designed by George Gilbert Scott, is a Grade II* listed building in the village. It was erected to commemorate the life of John Lloyd Salusbury, of Galltfaenan Hall. It forms part of a significant group of listed Scott-designed structures in the village, which include a school and parsonage.Nearby is Llannerch Hall.Trefnant railway station served the village. It closed in the 1960s. Also Llannerch railway station was located nearby at Llannerch Hall. It closed in 1871. Welsh language author and polemicist Emrys ap Iwan was a minister at Trefnant at the end of the 19th century.Green Methodist Chapel was built in 1824. Built in the simple Gothic style, gable entry type.Trefnant used to have a football team called Trefnant Village FC. They dropped out of the Clwyd League due to a cash crisis. They have a Summer league team which won the first summer title in 1927 and they last won a trophy in 2004, the shield, beating Henllan in the final.

Eriviat Hall is a historic country house set in a 9 acre estate in Henllan, Denbighshire which was the home of the ffoulkes family and their descendants from the Middle Ages until the early twentieth century. The property is now privately owned by a British Businessman.

Llannerch railway station was a private railway station on the Vale of Clwyd Railway. It was located close to Llannerch Hall, the home of Whitehall Dod who was a director of the Vale of Clwyd Railway company. From the opening of the line in October 1858 Dod had the right to stop trains for his use at this location until December 1871 when Dod's privilege expired, the railway having been acquired by the London & North Western Railway in 1867.

The Cathedral Church of Saints Asaph and Cyndeyrn, commonly called St Asaph Cathedral (Welsh: Eglwys Gadeiriol Llanelwy), is a cathedral in St Asaph, Denbighshire, north Wales. It is the episcopal seat of the Bishop of St Asaph. The cathedral dates back 1,400 years, while the current building dates from the 13th century. The cathedral is part of the Church in Wales and part of the Anglican Communion of Wales.
