The Abbey of St. Martin is a former Benedictine monastery in Autun, Saône-et-Loire, France, to the northeast of the city just outside the city walls, on the right bank of the Arroux and to the north of the Roman road from Autun to Langres, Beaune and Besançon.

The canton of Autun-1 is an administrative division of the Saône-et-Loire department, eastern France. It was created at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Autun.It consists of the following communes:

The Abbey of Saint-Jean-le-Grand (French: Abbaye Saint-Jean-le-Grand d'Autun) is a former Benedictine nunnery, in Autun, Saône-et-Loire, France, possibly founded by Queen Brunhilda and Bishop Syagrius of Autun. According to Gregory of Tours, it already existed in 589.This monastery was plundered and destroyed by the Saracens in 732, and again in 765 by Waiofar, Duke of Aquitaine. Charlemagne had it rebuilt and gave it the name of St. John.It was suppressed during the French Revolution.The abbey church was demolished; a parish church was built on the same site in the 1850s. Most of the conventual buildings were also demolished. The few that survive are from no earlier than the late 17th century and early 18th centuries.

The Musée lapidaire Saint-Nicolas is an archaeological museum in Autun, France. It is housed in the former Saint-Nicolas chapel, dating from the 12th century.

Les Télots Mine extracted oil shale dating from the Asselian era at Saint-Forgeot, on the outskirts of Autun in Saône-et-Loire town in central-eastern France. Shale mining in the area began in 1824 at Igornay. By 1837, shale oil was being produced for public lighting, and installations were constantly being improved to diversify production. Les Télots concession was granted in 1865. The refinery completed the oil distillation plant in 1936, employing several hundred workers who produced automotive fuel. During the Occupation, the site was of strategic importance to the German army, which kept a watchful eye on it, and minor acts of sabotage were carried out by the local resistance and the Allies (notably the Scullion raids). In retaliation, militiamen executed five workers. Following closure in 1957, the site was dismantled and partially demolished. Remains of the installations (ruins) and two large spoil tips still mark the landscape at the beginning of the 21st century, overgrown with particular vegetation studied for its biodiversity. Les Télots is recognized as a natural zone of ecological, faunistic, and floristic interest (ZNIEFF).

The arrondissement of Autun is an arrondissement of France in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. It has 89 communes. Its population is 131,392 (2016), and its area is 1,994.3 km2 (770.0 sq mi).

The Battle of Autun is said to have been fought in AD 532, when the Merovingian Kings Childebert I and Clothar I decisively defeated the Burgundians, led by King Godomar.

Autun (French: [otœ̃] ) is a subprefecture of the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of central-eastern France. It was founded during the Principate era of the early Roman Empire by Emperor Augustus as Augustodunum to give a Roman capital to the Gallic people Aedui, who had Bibracte as their political centre. In Roman times the city may have been home to 30,000 to 100,000 people, according to different estimates. Nowadays, the commune has a population of about 15,000.

The Ternin is a river in Burgundy, France, a right tributary of the Arroux, which is a tributary of the Loire. The length is 48 km, and its drainage basin is 257 km2. The source of the Ternin is near Saulieu, in the Morvan hills. It flows south through the villages Alligny-en-Morvan, Lucenay-l'Évêque and Tavernay, and joins the Arroux in Autun.

The Diocese of Autun (–Chalon-sur-Saône–Mâcon–Cluny) (Latin: Dioecesis Augustodunensis (–Cabillonensis–Matisconensis–Cluniacensis); French: Diocèse d'Autun (–Chalon-sur-Saône–Mâcon–Cluny)), more simply known as the Diocese of Autun, is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in France. The diocese comprises the entire Department of Saone et Loire, in the Region of Bourgogne. The diocese was suffragan to the Archdiocese of Lyon under the Ancien Régime, and the Bishop of Autun held the post of Vicar of the Archbishop. The bishopric of Chalon-sur-Saône (since Roman times) and (early medieval) bishopric of Mâcon, also suffragans of Lyon, were united to Autun after the French Revolution by the Concordat signed by First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte and Pope Pius VII. For a short time, from 1802 to 1822, the enlarged diocese of Autun was suffragan to the Archbishop of Besançon. In 1822, however, Autun was again subject to the Archbishop of Lyon. The diocese of Autun is now, since 8 December 2002, suffragan to the Archbishop of Dijon. The current bishop of Autun is Benoit Rivière.

The siege of Autun was a conflict fought between the Roman Empire and the invading barbarian Alemanni tribe, who were ravaging Gaul, in 356 AD. The Romans successfully defended the city, and the barbarians retreated on the approach of reinforcements.

The Musée Rolin is an art museum in Autun, Burgundy, France. Created in 1878 on the initiative of the Société éduenne, it is located on the site of the former home of Chancellor Nicolas Rolin. Its collections range from Gallo-Roman archaeology to 20th century painting, and are spread over more than twenty rooms. The museum's collections are divided into four departments: archaeology, medieval art, regional history and fine arts (17th to 20th century). It is classified as a "Museum of France", and remains the headquarters of the Société éduenne.
