General Electric Research Laboratory was the first industrial research facility in the United States. Established in 1900, the lab was home to the early technological breakthroughs of General Electric and created a research and development environment that set the standard for industrial innovation for years to come. It developed into GE Global Research that now covers an array of technological research, ranging from healthcare to transportation systems, at multiple locations throughout the world. Its campus in Schenectady, New York was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

The Schenectady Armory is located on Washington Avenue in the city of the same name in the U.S. state of New York. It is a brown brick building dating to 1936. New York's state architect at that time, William Haugaard, used the Art Deco architectural style for the exterior of the building and the Tudorbethan mode for the interior. The armory remains virtually intact today. It was home to two units of the New York Army National Guard until it was closed in 2008. In 1995 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

SUNY Schenectady is a public community college in Schenectady, New York. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It was established in 1967 in the Van Curler Hotel in Downtown Schenectady and has undergone multiple expansions through the following decades.

Elston Hall, formerly the Hotel Van Curler, is located on Washington Street in the city of Schenectady, New York, United States. It is a tall brick building constructed in 1925 in the Classical Revival architectural style. Its construction was partially financed by local employers General Electric and the American Locomotive Company, which needed space for new workers to live and wanted an architecturally distinctive building comparable with large city hotels of the era. Today, it is one of the main buildings of Schenectady County Community College.

Central Fire Station is a historic fire station located at Schenectady in Schenectady County, New York, USA. It was built between 1924 and 1929 and is a three-story, brick civic building in the Georgian Revival style. The front facade is dominated by a broad, five bay central pavilion. The first floor of the front facade is composed of five segmentally arched entrance bays faced with cast stone. The Schenectady Fire Department ceased using the building in 1981.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

YMCA of Schenectady is a historic YMCA building located at Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York. It was built between 1926 and 1928, and is a four-story and basement, red brick building with cast stone detailing. An addition was constructed in 1968. It is nearly rectangular in plan overall – with E-shaped upper floors. The front façade features twin main entrances and is dominated by an elevated two-story verandah with substantial wood columns. YMCA occupied the building until 2014.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Horace Mann School, also known as Craig Street School, is a historic school building located at Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York. It was built in 1907–1908, and is a two-story, I-shaped brick building above a reinforced concrete basement. The building includes some Neoclassical design elements including large fanlights, a projecting modillioned cornice, and monumental corner pilasters. A one-story rear addition was constructed in 1986. The Horace Mann School closed in 1981. The building is identical to the former Franklin School, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Mont Pleasant is a neighborhood of Schenectady, New York, United States. It is located in the south central part of the city and is the most populated of Schenectady's neighborhoods and has the most housing units as well.

Downtown Schenectady is the central business district for the city of Schenectady, New York. It originated in the 1820s with the moving of the commercial and industrial interests east from the original 17th and 18th century settlement, spurred on by the development of the Erie Canal. Home to the headquarters and major manufacturing plants of two large corporations, General Electric and American Locomotive Company, Downtown Schenectady catered to tens of thousands of workers in its heyday. Typical of the post-industrial Northeastern United States and Upstate New York in particular, Downtown Schenectady saw a decline in manufacturing and population starting in the 1970s. Recent construction and renovation has caused the downtown area to become an entertainment mecca for New York's Capital District anchored by Proctor's Theatre.

Proctor's Theatre (officially stylized as Proctors since 2007; however, the marquee retains the apostrophe) is a theatre and former vaudeville house located in Schenectady, New York, United States. Many famous artists have performed there, including Mariah Carey (whose 1993 top-rated Thanksgiving special was taped there), Britney Spears, Hal Holbrook, Ted Wiles, and George Burns, as well as many others. It has one of the largest movie screens in the Northeast. The theatre was opened on December 27, 1926. It was designed by architect Thomas Lamb. In 1979 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places, shortly before being renovated after a long period of decline and neglect. A renovation completed in 2007 added two theatres to the complex, providing a variety of performance spaces.

H. S. Barney Building is a historic department store complex located at Schenectady in Schenectady County, New York. The large commercial building consists of six sections constructed or acquired and linked between 1873 and 1923. It is predominantly brick in construction, but incorporates heavy timber framing, concrete, and limestone. A facade erected in 1923 in the Commercial style, helped to unify the complex. It ceased use as a department store in 1973.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 1984.

The Schenectady City School District is a public city school district in the city of Schenectady in Schenectady County, New York. The district has 17 operating school buildings and is a component district of the Capital Region Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). It was established in 1854 and served 9,256 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade in the 2018–2019 school year.As of 2008-2009, the district employed 728.8 (on an FTE basis) faculty members and the student-to-teacher ratio was 13.1. As of 2009, the district had the largest population of any school district in the Capital District.
