Near and Far Sawrey

Hill Top is a 17th-century house in Near Sawrey near Hawkshead, in the English county of Cumbria. It is an example of Lakeland vernacular architecture with random stone walls and slate roof. The house was once the home of children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter who left it to the National Trust. It is a Grade II* listed building. It is open to the public as a writer's house museum, shown as Beatrix Potter herself would have known it. The Hill Top garden is of interest, being maintained in a style in keeping with Potter's illustrations.

Moss Eccles Tarn is a tarn on Claife Heights, near Near Sawrey in the Lake District, Cumbria. It is currently owned by the National Trust and known as an attractive tarn for fishing and walking. It is known for its association with Beatrix Potter – she owned the tarn and donated it to the National Trust after her death, and it served as inspiration for some of her stories.

Esthwaite Water is one of the smaller and lesser known lakes in the Lake District National Park in northern England. It is situated between the much larger lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water, in the traditional county of Lancashire; since 1974 in the county of Cumbria. To the north is the village of Hawkshead and to the west is Grizedale Forest. The lake covers around 280 acres (1.1 km2) and is known for its excellent fishing, particularly trout and pike. It has been designated as a site of special scientific interest.

Claife is a civil parish in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England. It is situated west of Windermere, and east of Esthwaite Water and the village of Hawkshead. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 392, reducing to 298 at the 2011 census. Settlements in the parish include two villages, Near and Far Sawrey in the south; and the hamlets of High Wray, Low Wray, Colthouse and Loanthwaite in the north. In the central area of the parish is Claife Heights, a hilly area which rises to 800 feet (240 m) above sea level at Latterbarrow and contains several tarns. There is one major road in the parish, the B5285 connecting Hawkshead to the Windermere Ferry terminus at Far Sawrey. At Low Wray is Wray Castle, a 19th-century house and grounds now owned by the National Trust. Many of the woodlands in the parish, including the area alongside Windermere are part of the National Trust's Hawkshead and Claife property.

Esthwaite Lodge is a 19th-century house in Hawkshead, Cumbria, England; it is a Grade II listed building. The house was commissioned by Thomas Alcock Beck, a local resident and antiquarian. He employed Kendal-based architect George Webster to design a property for him.Webster's design was a stuccoed villa of two storeys and three bays with a slate hipped roof. Completed in 1821 the house is in the Neoclassical Greek Revival style a Doric porch was added.Beck died in 1846 but his widow and his descendants continued to live in the house until the early 20th century. The 1911 census for England, however, records the property as being unoccupied.Ownership of the house passed to the Brocklebank family who leased the house to a number of tenants. One of these, between 1929 and 1932 was the novelist Francis Brett Young until he decided that the weather was too wet for him.With the outbreak of the Second World War the house was used for accommodating volunteers involved with the Hawkshead Afforestation Scheme and later members of the Women's Land Army.In 1942 the house was purchased by Youth Hostels Association (England & Wales) and remains in use as a youth hostel.

Claife Heights is an upland area in the Lake District, near to Windermere in Cumbria, England. It has a topographic prominence of 177 metres (581 ft) so is classified as a Marilyn (a hill with prominence of at least 150m). It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. He describes a clockwise circuit starting at Far Sawrey and passing Moss Eccles Tarn. He says "Claife Heights is delightful. It was more so before forestry curtailed walking and restricted the views." and describes it as "No definite summit. Highest parts about 900ft."

Hawkshead and Claife is a National Trust property made up of much of the town of Hawkshead and surrounding Claife Woodlands in Cumbria, England. Overlooking Windermere itself is Claife Station, the ruins of a residence notable for the fact that each room was glazed in differing coloured glass to give the effect of viewing the landscape in the changing seasons. Hawkshead is home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, another National Trust property. The Trust also owns four miles of access along Windermere lakeshore.

Cunsey Beck is one of several rivers and streams that replenish the lake of Windermere in the English Lake District. Being just over two miles (3.2 km) in length and generally slow flowing, the stream descends some 87 feet (27 m) from the southern end of Esthwaite Water, which it drains, to the western banks of Windermere near an island called Ling Holm. After flowing out of Esthwaite Water the Cunsey Beck replenishes the small Out Dubs Tarn. Draining the tarn at its southern end the beck then flows in a south-easterly direction between the conifer-wooded slopes of Grizedale Forest to the south and west and the deciduous woodland of Bishop Woods to the north. Just before entering Windermere the beck passes through the deciduous Cunsey Wood. Immediately before entering the lake it is crossed by a footbridge which is part of a public footpath along a stretch of the western shore of Windermere.

Latterbarrow is a hill in the English Lake District, east of Hawkshead, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 803 feet (245 m) and is surmounted by a monument, but Wainwright, unusually, makes no comment on the monument's age or purpose, merely mentioning this "... elegant obelisk being prominently in view from Hawkshead and the Ambleside district." He recommends an anticlockwise circuit from Colthouse, near Hawkshead, and describes it as "a circular walk needing little effort yet yielding much delight". The name may indicate a hill where animals had their lair, from Old Norse látr, a lair or sty, and berg, a hill.

Roger Ground is a hamlet just south of the village of Hawkshead, in the South Lakeland district, in the English county of Cumbria.

The Windermere Way is a 45-mile circuit of Windermere, a lake in the English Lake District. The route is wholly within the Lake District National Park and takes in the summits of Wansfell, Loughrigg Fell and Gummer's How as well as passing through the towns of Ambleside and Windermere.

The museum operates in the old Hawkshead Grammar School building from April through to October. It gives a guided tour of the school room which brings the school to life. Visitors may feel the atmosphere and almost believe you are in a working English schoolroom of 200 years ago where the languages used were Latin and Greek. Visitors may see the Elizabethan charter and silver seal and the desk on which William Wordsworth carved his initials.
