University of Tartu Old Observatory

The Gunpowder Cellar (Estonian: Püssirohukelder) is a historic building in Tartu, Estonia which now functions as a beer restaurant. The name is derived from the restaurant's location: it is situated in an 18th-century gunpowder cellar constructed in 1768–1778 by order of Catherine II of Russia on the site of an earlier fort, making use of the natural valley and pre-existing very thick brick walls for added safety. The building served as a gunpowder cellar until 1809 when it was converted to a beer storage room. At the end of the 19th century the building began to be used by the University of Tartu which meant that lectures and scientific work were often conducted on top of gunpowder barrels. In the 1990s it functioned as a large medieval restaurant before reopening in 2001 as a pub and disco though retaining a wine cellar.Its unique structure also lends it a unique distinction: it is in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the highest pub ceiling in the world, at 11 metres (36 ft).The restaurant is a popular meeting place among Tartu's student population. It boasts a regular cultural programme, including a number of plays by the Vanemuine theatre. This programme includes regular live music events.

Von Bock House is in Ülikooli Street in Tartu in Estonia. The building is owned by Tartu University, and is on the same street as the university's main building. Von Bock house has a mural of the university's main building on one of its walls.

University of Tartu Art Museum (Estonian: Tartu Ülikooli kunstimuuseum) is an art museum in Tartu, Estonia. It is founded in 1803 and considered to be the oldest art museum in Estonia. The museum is located in Main building of Tartu University. The museum is a branch of University of Tartu Museum. The chief of the museum is Mariann Raisma.The museum has a permanent exhibition which consists of, amongst other objects, original size plaster cast copies of Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Greece.Since 1980 the museum has been home to the mummies of two Egyptian boys. They have been carbon dated as living between 410 and 50BC. They were donated to the university in 1819 on the death of their collector Otto von Richter.

Tartu University Library (Estonian: Tartu Ülikooli raamatukogu) is an academic library in Tartu, Estonia, belonging to the University of Tartu. It is the largest academic library in the country. The library was founded in 1802 (with its forerunner from 1632). Holdings include approximately 3.7 million volumes. The collection is particularly rich in the field of semiotics. The main building of the library is situated in the center of Tartu, on Struve Street 1. Its holdings include memorial collections of Karl Ernst von Baer, Thomas Sebeok and many others. From 1985 to 1988 Marju Lepajõe was Senior Librarian, Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books there.

The Ülikooli Street (Estonian: Ülikooli tänav, University Street) is a street in the center of Tartu in Estonia. Named after the University of Tartu whose main building is located on this street (18 Ülikooli str.), it runs through the business district, passes behind the Town Hall building, and hosts a number of University-related facilities, including the university cafe (20 Ülikooli str.), Von Bock House, the university book shop (11 Ülikooli str.) and the old Faculty of Chemistry building, which is also called the Marx Building (16 Ülikooli str.). The Barclay Square, location of the Barclay de Tolli bust, and the Pirogov Square, location of the Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov statue, are adjacent to the street. The street has also been named as "Silicon Alley" because of the high concentration of information technology companies.

The Heino Eller Tartu Music College is a music school in Tartu, Estonia, founded in 1919. It got its current name in 1971, after the Estonian composer and music teacher Heino Eller, who taught at the school from 1920 until 1940.

Main building of Tartu University (Estonian: Tartu Ülikooli peahoone) is the main building of the University of Tartu. This building is one of the most notable examples of classical style in Estonia. Built between 1804 and 1809, it was designed by the architect Johann Wilhelm Krause.The building has been restored many times, including after a fire in 1965, and most recently in 2007.It features a large auditorium, as well as lock-up rooms in the attic used during the 19th century to detain students as punishment.

The University of Tartu (UT; Estonian: Tartu Ülikool; Latin: Universitas Tartuensis) is a public research university located in the city of Tartu, Estonia. It is the national university of Estonia. It is the biggest and oldest university in the country. The university was founded under the name of Academia Gustaviana in 1632 by Baron Johan Skytte, the Governor-General of Swedish Livonia, Ingria, and Karelia, with the required ratification provided by King Gustavus Adolphus, shortly before the king's death on 6 November in the Battle of Lützen (1632).Nearly 14,300 students are at the university, of whom over 1,800 are foreign students. The language of instruction in most curricula is Estonian. In addition there are 30 English-taught programmes: 3 first level programmes and 27 master's level programmes, including the Erasmus Mundus programme Excellence in Analytical Chemistry.The historical buildings of the university are included in the European Heritage Label list as "embodiment of the ideas of a university in the Age of Enlightenment". The university is a member of the Coimbra Group and the Utrecht Network.

Inglisild ('Angel's Bridge') is a bridge in Toomemägi, Tartu, Estonia. The bridge was built between 1814 and 1816 and was designed by Johann Wilhelm Krause. Later, the bridge was somewhat re-built and in 1836 construction works ended. The rebuilt structure was designed by Moritz Hermann von Jacobi.It is supposed that the name of bridge is very likely a corruption of the original "Englische Brücke" or "English bridge".The portrait relief in the middle of the bridge commemorates the first rector of the re-founded University of Tartu in 1802, Georg Friedrich Parrot (1767–1852), and bears the inscription Otium reficit vires ('Leisure Renews the Powers'). On 21 April 2012 the bridge was damaged by fire.

The siege of Tartu took place in 1224 and resulted in the fall of the last major center of Estonian resistance in the mainland provinces to the Christian conquest of Estonia.

Barclay de Tolly Monument (Estonian: Barclay de Tolly monument) is a monument in Tartu, Estonia. The monument is erected in the honor of Baltic-German field marshal Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly. The monument is listed as cultural heritage monument of Estonia.The monument is designed by I. Demut–Malinovski and A. Stsedrin. The monument opened in 1849.
