Atholton is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal office operated from May 26, 1897, to November 1900 and again from 1903 to July 1917.Atholton was founded at the crossroads of Old Columbia Pike, Guilford Road and Clarksville Pike. Atholton takes its name from a 600-acre (240 ha) land grant named "Athole" granted from King Charles to James Macgill 17 August 1732. He built a nearby manor house named "Athol" built between 1732 and 1740. In 1845, Nicolas Worthington freed seventeen of his slaves, and gave them 150 acres (61 ha) of the "Athol enlarged" land which was then called "Freetown". In 1869, the Atholton Colored Church was founded and renamed to the Locust Chapel (Locust United Methodist) between 1871 and 1876.Atholton was situated one mile north of Simpsonville without well-defined boundaries. By the 1930s, postal service was concentrated at Simpsonville.In 1962, Edward G Pickett and Walter Shank built the Atholton Village Shopping Center, which was one of the first commercial properties taken over by Columbia Research & Development (Rouse) in 1965. The same year the historic Volkmann home burned down by arson shortly after being purchased for the Holiday Hills Development.

Hickory Ridge is one of the 10 villages in Columbia, Maryland, United States, located to the west of the Town Center with a 2014 population of 13,000 in 4,659 housing units. The village overlays the former postal community of Elioak. It was first occupied in 1974. Neighborhoods in the village are Hawthorn, Clary's Forest, and Clemens Crossing. The name Hickory Ridge is derived from the 1749 estate "Hickory Ridge" in nearby Highland, which later became the family home of the nephew of hospital and university founder Johns Hopkins.Clary's Forest is named after John Clary's 100-acre original land grant patented on 10 June 1734. Streets in Clary's Forest are based on the work of William Carlos Williams. Hawthorn is the name of an Amy Lowell poem. The street names come from her work. Clemens Crossing is named after American author Mark Twain, otherwise known as Samuel Clemens, and the street names come from Clemens' work. The land surrounding Sierra Villas Condominiums and Barnside Condominiums in Clary's Forest originally belonged to the Kahler family farm. The farm's silo remains in the condominium property. The Kahler farm was one of three large tracts originally purchased by Robert Moxley that started the Columbia project in 1963. Hickory Plaza was built on the site of Midway Farm, the last piece of a 400-acre (160 ha) farm owned by the Bassler family before the creation of the Rouse development.

Hatfield Safe House, or Simpsonville Mill Miller's House is a historic home located at Columbia, Howard County, Maryland, United States.The three-story wood-framed house is three bays wide and one bay deep on a 9-acre parcel. A house was built on a stone foundation built in 1755 for a possible grist mill. It is known as a safe house for the Underground railroad. The original structure burned down, with a new frame building built on the original foundation. From 1865 to 1878 it was owned by William Braysahaw. In 1878, James Simpson resided at the residence to which "Simpsonville" is named. In the late 1920s the terraced landscape was dotted with chicken coops. From 1909 to 1934 the house was the residence of county commissioner William W. Inglehardt. The building is a component of Simpsonville Historic District.

Kings Contrivance is a village in the planned community of Columbia, Maryland, United States and is home to approximately 11,000 residents. It is Columbia's southernmost village, and was the eighth of Columbia's ten villages to be developed. Kings Contrivance consists of the neighborhoods of Macgill's Common, Huntington and Dickinson, and includes single-family homes, townhouses, apartments and a Village Center (open-air shopping center).

The James and Anne Robinson Nature Center is a nature education facility situated on 18 acres of park land adjacent to the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area. Geothermal heating/air-conditioning, porous paving, solar panels, water conservation methods and other features make this building environmentally-friendly and have earned it the LEED Certified Platinum designation. Each year, the Center runs over 450 programs including field trips, public programs, birthday parties, home school and scout programs. James and Anne Robinson cared for the property for decades and kept it from being used by developers, ultimately arranging transfer to Howard County, Maryland for enjoyment by the general public. The Center continues to be partially supported by the James & Anne Robinson Foundation and is owned and operated by the Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks.
