The town is located in the central part of the county and borders the city of Watertown to the south, east, and west. As the city has a population of 24,685, or six times the town's population, references to "Watertown, New York", usually apply to the city rather than the town.

WTNY broadcasts at 1,000 watts. By day it uses a non-directional antenna. But at night, to protect other stations on AM 790 it uses a directional antenna with a three-tower array. The transmitter is on Ives Street Road. WTNY is heard on FM translator W240EA at 95.9 MHz.

It was built in 1896–1897 and is a massive 2+1⁄2-story mansion constructed of rock faced, random course Medina sandstone which was hand-cut on site. The footprint is 5,628 square feet (522.9 m2), not including the porches and porte cochere. It is Queen Anne in style and features wraparound porches, towers, projecting bays, dormers, and a complex roofline. It was constructed as a wedding gift to his daughter by New York Governor Roswell Pettibone Flower.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Trinity Episcopal Church and Parish House is a historic Episcopal church located at Watertown in Jefferson County, New York. The church was built in 1889-1890 and is massive, rambling Richardsonian Romanesque–style edifice built of random coursed, ashlar stone with a water table and foundation of similar stone. The parish house was built in 1912–1913.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Paddock Mansion is a historic home located at Watertown in Jefferson County, New York. Since 1922, it has been the headquarters of the Jefferson County Historical Society. It was built in 1876 and is a 2+1⁄2-story brick structure on a high basement in the Stick / Eastlake style. It features a 3-story tower on the southeast corner and the eaves, gables, balconies, and front porch are supported by elaborate turned millwork and chamfered brackets and posts.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Watertown Masonic Temple is a historic building and former Masonic hall located in Watertown in Jefferson County, New York. It was constructed in 1914 as a meeting hall for a local Masonic lodge and is a three-story building in the Neoclassical style, with a masonry and steel structure. The front of the building features a large prostyle temple front with six Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 In 2003, the Masonic Hall Association decided to sell the building, citing the cost of maintaining the structure, and declining membership for its decision.In 2017, a plan to renovate the building as a performing arts center was included in a ten million dollar New York State Empire State Development Corporation revitalization grant.

It is a one-storey, asymmetrically massed building of random course ashlar stone of light grey color. It features a three-story square stone tower with a crenellated top and round battlements at the corners and square ones in the center.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Built in 1850, it is the second oldest covered shopping mall and the oldest continuously running enclosed shopping mall in the United States. Since it has seen uninterrupted use since it opened in 1850, it carries the distinction of being the country's oldest, continuously operating covered shopping mall.: 3–5  The Paddock Arcade was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
