Blauwe Meer

Hoogersmilde is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 16 km southwest of Assen.

Zendstation Smilde, also known as the CJ2 Data tower (Dutch: CJ2 Datatoren) is a tall partially guyed tower in Hoogersmilde, the Netherlands, built in 1959, for directional radio services and TV and FM-transmissions. The structure is similar to the Gerbrandy Tower (IJsselstein), and consists of an 80-metre (262') high reinforced concrete tower and, until a fire on 15 July 2011, had a guyed tubular mast mounted on top. When first built, the tower, including the mast, was 270 metres (885') high. The addition of a further section (analog TV - UHF antenna) to the mast increased its total height to 303.5 metres (996 ft). In September 2007 the analog TV - UHF antenna was removed and replaced by a new UHF antenna for DVB-T, reducing the tower's height to 294 metres (965 ft). After rebuilding the collapsed tower in 2012, the new height is 303 metres (995').

Eemster is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 16 km north of Hoogeveen. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1210 as Hemsere. The etymology is unclear. Eemster was home to 179 people in 1840.

Geeuwenbrug is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 18 km north of Hoogeveen. The village was first mentioned in 1617 or 1618 as "die Crumme voerdt offt guijwe", and means bridge over a waterway, and refers to the former river Lake which was used to transport peat. The river was later canalised and became part of the Drentsche Hoofdvaart. The village started to develop along the canal after 1850.

Lheebroek is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 14 km (9 mi) north of Hoogeveen. The hamlet was first mentioned between 1381 and 1383 as to Lederbroke, and means "swampy land belonging to Lhee". Lheebroek was home to 40 people in 1840.

Oranje is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 13 km southwest of Assen.

Leggeloo is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 17 km north of Hoogeveen. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1217 as in Legghelo. The etymology is unclear. Leggeloo was home to 172 people in 1840.

Lhee is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Hoogeveen. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1181 as "In Lede". The etymology is unclear.Around 1800, a little school was built in Lhee. In 1953, it was moved brick by brick to the Netherlands Open Air Museum despite protests from the former teacher. Lhee was home to 229 people in 1840.

Dwingeloo (Dutch: [ˈdʋɪŋəloː]) is a village halfway between Meppel and Assen in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld. The village is known internationally because of the radio telescope of the Dwingeloo Radio Observatory (which at the time of its completion in 1956 was the largest radio telescope in the world), located on the edge of the Dwingeloo Heath, 3 km south of the village. The telescope discovered Dwingeloo 1 and Dwingeloo 2, two galaxies about 10 million light-years away from the Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia.

ASTRON is the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. Its main office is in Dwingeloo in the Dwingelderveld National Park in the province of Drenthe. ASTRON is part of the institutes organization of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).

The Dwingeloo Radio Observatory is a single-dish radio telescope near the village of Dwingeloo (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdʋɪŋəloː]) in the northeastern Netherlands. Construction started in 1954, and the telescope was completed in 1956. The radio telescope has a diameter of 25 m. At the time of completion it was the largest radio telescope in the world, but it was overtaken in 1957 by the 250 foot (76 m) Lovell Telescope. As of 2000, it was no longer in operation in an official capacity. Since August 2009, the radio telescope has been a national heritage site (rijksmonument). The telescope dish was removed for restoration in June 2012. The "C.A. Muller Radio Astronomy Station" foundation ("CAMRAS" for short) restored the telescope to working order. The dish was remounted in November 2012.Radio amateurs along with amateur and professional astronomers, use the telescope for projects, one being Earth–Moon–Earth communication, also known as moonbounce, which allows for people on different parts of Earth to communicate via the Moon. In this technique, radio wave signals are aimed at the Moon by one location, bounce off the Moon's surface, and are detected by an antenna at a different location on Earth. "Visual Moonbounce" is a technology to moonbounce images at amateur-radio frequencies. It is based on artistic research with the Dwingeloo Radiotelescoop by artist Daniela De Paulis as part of her project "OPTICKS" The radio telescope is owned by ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. The site of the Dwingeloo Radio Observatory also houses most of the staff of ASTRON and a test site for the Low Frequency Array radio telescope, LOFAR. Two galaxies are named after this telescope: Dwingeloo 1 and Dwingeloo 2.

Dieverbrug is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 17 km northwest of Hoogeveen. The village was first mentioned in 1841 as "Dieverbrug of Dieverschebrug", and refers to the bridge which was built around 1770 over the Drentsche Hoofdvaart on the road from Diever to Dwingeloo.Dieverbrug was home to 45 people in 1840. The lime kiln was built in 1925. It remained in function until 1952, but has remained as the local landmark.
