The Acciona Open de España (formerly the Spanish Open) is the national open golf championship of Spain. It was founded in 1912 and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the inception of the Tour in 1972. The tournament has been played in April or May, except for a five-year period in the early 1980s and since the 2019 edition, when the tournament was moved to October. In 2005, it was one of five European Tour events to be held in Spain. Former champions include Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo and Jon Rahm. The tournament has been organized by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. In April 2019, a partnership between the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the European Tour, and Madrid Trophy Promotion (MTP) was announced. This agreement meant that MTP became the organizer of the event for the next 5 years. MTP is also the organizer of the Mutua Madrid Open, a professional tennis tournament.

The Embassy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in Madrid is the diplomatic mission of North Korea to Spain. In February 2001 Spain and North Korea established diplomatic relations. In 2003, plans to open a diplomatic mission were halted due to North Korea's withdrawal from Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. On 1 October 2013, Kim Hyok-chol became the first DPRK ambassador in Spain when his country opened its new embassy in Madrid. In September 2017 he was expelled as a persona non grata after a North Korean nuclear weapon's test on 3 September 2017. As of 2019, Yun Suk-so remains the highest ranking diplomatic official, with the title of Commercial Attaché.

The 1965 Canada Cup took place 30 September – 3 October at the Real Sociedad Hípica Española Club de Campo in Madrid, Spain. It was the 13th Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 37 teams. These were the same teams that had competed in 1964 but with the addition of Czechoslovakia, Monaco and Morocco. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. The South African team of Harold Henning and Gary Player won by eight strokes over the Spanish team of Ángel Miguel and Ramón Sota. The individual competition was won by Gary Player, who finished two shots ahead of Jack Nicklaus.

The Hipódromo de la Zarzuela is a race course on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain. It was designed in the 1930s. The architecture is in a modernist style which has been described as racionalismo madrileño.Races held at the facility include the Gran Premio de Madrid which has been held there since 1941.
