Arklow (barony)

Redcross (Irish: An Chrois Dhearg, formerly Baile Domhnaill Rua) is a village and also a civil parish in County Wicklow, Ireland. It lies on the R754 regional road, about 3 km (1.9 mi) east of the N11 national primary route.

Howard Mausoleum was erected in County Wicklow, Ireland, commissioned in 1785, for the first Viscount of Wicklow, Ralph Howard. The architect is believed to have been Simon Vierpyl.

Avoca railway station served the town of Avoca in County Wicklow. The station was known as Ovoca until 1912. It opened on 18 July 1863 and was closed on 30 March 1964 except for special excursions.

Avoca (Irish: Abhóca, formerly Abhainn Mhór, meaning 'the great river') is a small town near Arklow, in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is situated on the River Avoca. The Avoca area has been associated with its copper mines for many years and the valley has been celebrated by Thomas Moore in the song "The Meeting of the Waters". The name of the song derives from the meeting of the Avonmore and Avonbeg rivers, about 3 kilometres from the village of Avoca. The song is said to have been written under a tree, the stump of which remains by the Meetings. Avoca is also famous for its handweaving, with Avoca Handweavers based there. Avoca has been used as a filming location for several films and television series. The BBC series Ballykissangel was filmed there. In 1967, Avoca was one of the locations used in the film Jules Verne's Rocket to the Moon, and it was the setting for the comedy film Zonad which had a general Irish release in 2010. The red kite, recently reintroduced to Ireland, is now commonly seen in and around Avoca.

The R750 road is a regional road in County Wicklow, Ireland. From its junction with the R772 in Rathnew on the outskirts of Wicklow Town it takes a generally southerly route to its junction with the R772 in Ferrybank, Arklow, where it terminates. An unusual feature of the road (apart from the complete absence of road markings) is a section of several kilometres with a concrete surface south of Brittas Bay. The road is 30 km (19 mi) long. En route it stays close to the coast passing many popular beaches, notably at Brittas Bay.

Pearse Park or Pearse's Park, (Irish: Páirc na bPiarsach) is an GAA stadium in Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland. It is the home of the Wicklow hurling and camogie teams. The ground has a capacity of about 5,000.

Arklow Town Football Club are a football club from Arklow, County Wicklow in Ireland. The club fields a number of senior teams, including in the Leinster Senior League and the Wicklow & District Football League. The club's home ground, known as "Travers Insurances Park" as of 2022, is at Bridgewater Centre Park in Lamberton.

The Arklow Maritime Museum opened in 1976 in the old technical school on Saint Marys Road in Arklow, County Wicklow. Its original purpose was to celebrate the town's rich seafaring heritage, described by the late maritime historian John de Courcy Ireland in a letter to the museum as "Ireland's Most Maritime Town". In 2009, the museum moved to its current location at the Bridgewater Shopping Centre.

The Battle of Arklow was a minor skirmish that took place at Glascarrig on the coast road near Arklow in County Wicklow on 1 November 1649. It was fought between the army of the Parliamentarians and the combined forces of the Irish Royalists and Confederates during the Irish Confederate Wars.

The second Battle of Arklow took place during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 on 9 June when a force of United Irishmen from Wexford, estimated at 10,000 strong, launched an assault into County Wicklow, on the British-held town of Arklow, in an attempt to spread the rebellion into Wicklow and to threaten the capital of Dublin.

Arklow ( ARK-loh; from Old Norse Arnkell-ló 'meadow of Arnkell'; Irish: An tInbhear Mór, lit. 'the great estuary') is a town in County Wicklow on the southeast coast of Ireland. The town is overlooked by Ballymoyle Hill. It was founded by the Vikings in the ninth century. Arklow was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the 1798 rebellion. Its proximity to Dublin led to it becoming a commuter town with a population of 13,163 as of the 2016 census. The 2022 census recorded a population of 13,399. The town is in a townland and civil parish of the same name. Arklow is at the mouth of the River Avoca, the longest river wholly within County Wicklow. The town is divided by the river, which is crossed by the Nineteen Arches Bridge, a stone arch bridge linking the southern or main part of the town with the northern part, called Ferrybank. The Nineteen Arches Bridge is the longest handmade stone bridge in Ireland, and a plaque on the south end of the bridge acknowledges this.
