The New York – New Jersey Highlands is a geological formation composed primarily of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rock running from the Delaware River near Musconetcong Mountain, northeast through the Skylands Region of New Jersey along the Bearfort Ridge and the Ramapo Mountains, Sterling Forest, Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks in New York, to the Hudson River at Storm King Mountain. The northern region is also known as the Hudson Highlands and the southern as the New Jersey Highlands. A broader definition would extend the region west to Reading, Pennsylvania, and east to the Housatonic River in Connecticut, encompassing the Reading Prong. The highlands are a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains. In New Jersey, the region's watershed is protected by the state's own Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act (2004). In addition to preserving water resources, the act created the New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council (NJ Highlands Council) whose mission includes supporting open space preservation and the creation of new recreational parks and hiking trails in America's most densely populated state. These include the Highlands Trail, designated as a Millennium Trail by the White House Millennium Council and maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. The New Jersey Highlands Coalition was formed in 1988 to protect the resources of the region.In November 2004, the federal Highlands Conservation Act was passed. The Highlands Conservation Act “recognizes the importance of the water, forest, agricultural, wildlife, recreational, and cultural resources of the Highlands region, and the national significance of the Highlands region to the United States.”

Jefferson Township High School is a four-year comprehensive community public high school, serving students in ninth through twelfth grades from Jefferson Township, in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, operating as the lone secondary school of the Jefferson Township Public Schools. The school is located in the Oak Ridge section of the township. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 867 students and 83.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.4:1. There were 79 students (9.1% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 22 (2.5% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Rock Lodge Club is a naturist club located on 145 acres (59 ha) of privately owned land located in the Stockholm area of the Hardyston Township, New Jersey, which is situated on the New Jersey Highlands of North Jersey, about 40 miles (64 km) from Manhattan, New York. Rock Lodge Club and Sky Farm, also based in New Jersey, were founded in 1932 as the first permanent nudist communities in the United States. Both clubs are active today.

Lake Swannanoa is a residential lake community located within Jefferson Township, in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is within the scenic Skylands Region and approximately 38 miles (61 km) by road from New York City.

Jefferson Township is the northernmost township in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 20,538, a decrease of 776 (−3.6%) from the 2010 census count of 21,314, which in turn reflected an increase of 1,597 (+8.1%) from the 19,717 counted in the 2000 census.Jefferson Township was formed as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 11, 1804, from portions of Pequannock Township and Roxbury. The township was named after Thomas Jefferson, the President of the United States at the time the Township was created. The township is situated in the northernmost part of Morris County bordering both Passaic and Sussex counties.

Oak Ridge is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located along the border of West Milford Township in Passaic County and Jefferson Township in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The area is served as United States Postal Service ZIP Code 07438. As of the 2000 United States census, the population for ZIP Code Tabulation Area 07438 was 11,901. Oak Ridge is located on the Pequannock River along Route 23 and the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad main line. County Route 699 (Oak Ridge Road) runs south from the junction with Route 23 and is the main north–south local route in the community. As of 2018, in the section in Jefferson Township, the people there state they are from "Milton".

Stockholm is an unincorporated community located in the southeastern part of Hardyston Township in Sussex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its ZIP Code is 07460. Like many neighboring towns, Stockholm is home to a number of lakes including Deer Trail Lakes, Lake Stockholm, Lake Gerard, Beaver Lake, Lake Tamarack and Summit Lake. Stockholm was known in colonial times as Snufftown and was named after Stockholm, Sweden. The New Jersey Midland Railway named a station in the area "Stockholm", which replaced "Snufftown".As of the 2010 United States Census, the population for ZIP Code Tabulation Area 07460 was 3,457.

Stockholm United Methodist Church (Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church of Snufftown) is a historic church on County Route 515 in the Stockholm section of Hardyston Township in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1826 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

The Pequannock River is a tributary of the Pompton River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) long, located in northern New Jersey in the United States. It rises in eastern Sussex County, near Highland Lakes on the north side of Hamburg Mountain. It flows southeast to Stockholm, then east-southeast, in a gap north of Green Pond Mountain and other ridges, past Butler and Bloomingdale. It joins the Ramapo River at Pompton Plains in Pequannock Township to form the Pompton. In its upper course, it forms part of the county line between Passaic and Morris counties. It is impounded near its source to form the Oak Ridge Reservoir. The river is relatively unspoiled compared to other rivers in the region. It is a popular spot for recreation trout fishing in its upper reaches. Fishing, hunting, and other recreational uses of the river and watershed are controlled by the City of Newark's Division of Watershed Development, which requires permits for all such uses. The Pequannock watershed is the source of most of Newark's water supply. The lands and water were purchased under the mayoralty of Joseph E. Haynes.

Green Pond is a private lakeside residential unincorporated community within Rockaway Township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The lakeside community is managed by two corporations, Green Pond Corporation and Lake End Corporation. Green Pond is located in Rockaway Township in Morris County, but has a Newfoundland (Passaic County) mailing address. Newfoundland came to wider attention in 2003 when large portions of the independent film, The Station Agent, were filmed there. Several scenes of this film took place on Green Pond Road (County Route 513), a public thoroughfare which connects a former New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway depot and Route 23 to Lake End Road and to the private lanes of the Green Pond Village community. Lakeside scenes of The Station Agent that were set on Green Pond were actually filmed elsewhere, as the Lake End and Green Pond Corporations denied lake access to the filmmakers. New homeowners in either Green Pond or Lake End Corporations pay a fee to the relevant corporation in addition to the usual real estate closing fees, and become "stockholders" in exchange for an interest in the common lands which surround the community. Only stockholders and their guests (who are required to wear ID) may access the lake and the community facilities, which include tennis courts, ballfields, a community center, and a membership-only yacht club that races Comet sailboats. On summer weekends and major holidays, a security guard is stationed at the entrance to Green Pond village to prevent unauthorized access to the beach areas.

Lake Denmark is a small lake about in Rockaway Township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. Close by are Picatinny Lake in the southwest and the Green Pond in the northeast. It is located at an elevation of 961 ft (293 m) and has a triangle form. Lake Denmark has a max. length of about 4,000 ft (1,200 m) and a max. width of about 2,000 ft (610 m). There is a large swamp with a size of about 4,000 sq ft (370 m2) in the north which is part of the lake.

As of the 2018–19 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 604 students and 56.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.8:1.
