Rush City is the state's newest prison, opened in January 2000. The $89 million project stands as the largest single structure in the county, employs about 350 workers, and at the ten-year mark in 2010 was reported to have met local expectations as a quiet and relatively well-run prison.But in June 2010, 27-year-old inmate Xavius Scullark-Johnson died after a string of overnight seizures while held in Rush City, where he was denied emergency medical care. In deteriorating health for months, he anticipated his own death in letters to his mother. His family sued the Department of Corrections, the contracted health care provider Corizon, and the individuals involved. The DOC agreed to settle the suit for $400,000 and promised additional training.

Wild River State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, curving along 18 miles (29 km) of the St. Croix River. This long, narrow park is shaped somewhat like a sideways 'S', with development largely concentrated in the lower third. The Sunrise River is a 39.1-mile-long (62.9 km) tributary of the St. Croix River in east–central Minnesota in the United States. It originates within the boundaries of the Comfort Lake - Forest Lake Watershed District near the city of Forest Lake in Washington County. It's headwaters are considered several small tributaries that flow into and contribute to Forest Lake, the longest of which is the Washington Judicial Ditch 6. From the outflow from Forest Lake, the river flows north, accepting the South Branch from the west near the city of Wyoming, and continues north into Mud Lake, where the West Branch, which rises in southeast Isanti County and briefly enters Anoka County, joins it near the city of Stacy. From Stacy it flows generally north-northwest through Chisago County to meet the St. Croix River within Wild River State Park near the communities of Sunrise and Almelund. Not far upstream from its mouth, the Sunrise collects its North Branch, which rises in Isanti County and flows through the city of North Branch.Sunrise River is the English translation of the native Ojibwe-language name.There is a dam on the Sunrise River. The Sunrise River watershed spans 381 square miles in Isanti, Pine, Chisago, Washington, and Anoka counties.
