The Haskayne School of Business is the University of Calgary's business school, located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is named after Richard F. Haskayne, who gave one of the largest endowments to a business school in Canada. The school offers undergraduate, masters, and PhD degrees, as well as executive education programs. Haskayne is ranked as one of the top business schools in Canada and Top 100 in the world.

The Father David Bauer Olympic Arena is an ice hockey arena in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It seats about 1,750 for hockey with a standing room capacity of over 2,000. It is named after Father David Bauer.Canada's defunct national touring team, the brainchild of Bauer, also staged tryouts there. The arena was built in 1963.The arena uses the 200 by 100 feet (61 by 30 m) (or Olympic) sized ice surface. A second arena, the Norma Bush Arena is attached to the facility, and has a 185 by 85 feet (56 by 26 m) artificial ice surface.The arena was the home of the Calgary Mustangs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and is the home arena for the Calgary Dinos university hockey team. It is also the home of the Western Hockey League major junior circuit, the AAA Midget Flames of the Alberta Midget Hockey League and is often used as the training facility for the Canadian Olympic and junior national teams.FDB also hosts games for the annual Mac's AAA midget hockey tournament. The arena was used for a few ice hockey games at the 1988 Winter Olympics as well as the compulsory figures section of the men's and women's figure skating competitions .The arena is located in the same complex as McMahon Stadium and Foothills Stadium, adjacent to the University of Calgary.

The University of Calgary (U of C or UCalgary) is a public research university located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The University of Calgary started in 1944 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, founded in 1908, prior to being instituted into a separate, autonomous university in 1966. It is composed of 14 faculties and over 85 research institutes and centres. The main campus is located in the northwest quadrant of the city near the Bow River and a smaller south campus is located in the city centre. The main campus houses most of the research facilities and works with provincial and federal research and regulatory agencies, several of which are housed next to the campus such as the Geological Survey of Canada. The main campus covers approximately 200 hectares (490 acres). A member of the U15, the University of Calgary is also one of Canada's top research universities (based on the number of Canada Research Chairs). The university has a sponsored research revenue of $380.4 million, with total revenues exceeding $1.2 billion. The university maintains close ties to the petroleum and geoscience industry through the Department of Geosciences and the Schulich School of Engineering. The university also maintains several other departments and faculties, including the Cumming School of Medicine, the Faculty of Arts, the School of Public Policy, the Faculty of Law, and the Haskayne School of Business.Notable former students include Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Java computer language inventor James Gosling, Uber co-founder Garrett Camp, astronaut Robert Thirsk, and Lululemon Athletica founder Chip Wilson. The university has produced over 170,000 alumni who reside in 152 countries.

The Jack Simpson Gymnasium is a multipurpose facility on the University of Calgary campus. It opened in 1987 to help host the 1988 XV Olympic Winter Games. It has three full gymnasiums, three basketball courts, five volleyball courts, and an indoor football/soccer field. The "Jack" is home to the Dinos volleyball and basketball teams. With a max seating capacity of 3454, it has hosted several CIS Championships, the annual Husky Dino Cup volleyball tournament, World League volleyball matches, and is the site for the University of Calgary's annual convocation ceremonies."The facility is named after Jackson L. Simpson (1920-1984), the founder and former president of CANA Construction Company.

University station is a CTrain light rail station on the Northwest Line (Route 201) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, opened on September 7, 1987 as the part of the original line's terminus station until August 30, 1990. The station is located in the median of Crowchild Trail, just north of 24 Avenue NW and east of the University of Calgary grounds. The station is connected by bridges to both sides of Crowchild Trail, and two sets of stairs and an elevator provide access to the platform. In addition to the University of Calgary, the station is another LRT station adjacent to Banff Trail. One of the busiest stations on the line, experiencing a high volume of traffic from students at the University of Calgary, and nearby William Aberhart High School. As part of Calgary Transit plan to operate 4-car CTrains by the end of 2014, all 3-car platforms were to be extended. Construction on the platform extension at University Station was completed in December 2013.In 2007, the station registered an average of 16,100 boardings per weekday.

Shell Centre is a 33-storey, 140 m (460 ft) office tower in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. At completion in 1977, Shell Centre was the fourth tallest building in Calgary, behind Dome Tower, Bow Valley Square Two, and Stephen Avenue Place. The Shell Centre was announced by Olympia and York Developments in February 1975 as a $35-million, 33-storey, 630,000 sq ft (59,000 m2) tower to be built on the site of the former Caravan Hotel. The building would be Olympia and York's first development in Western Canada, which went ahead despite the absence of a major tenant at announcement. During construction of the building Shell Oil would step forward to become the primary tenant for the building in a plan that would consolidate the oil company's 1,000 employees in Calgary, and changing the name of the building to Shell Centre. Shell Centre's design called for 34,000 cubic yards of concrete and 4,700 tons of steel in construction, and the structure was cladded with 1.25 inch think slabs of Italian granite. The building included two levels of underground parking with capacity for 86 cars. The building was designed in a figure eight shape which allows for eight corner offices, and includes a recessed lobby accessible from street levels behind a series of supportive pillars. The Calgary Herald would note the tower marked a turning point in corporate offices in Calgary, moving away from the traditional simple towers which were previously common in the city, to more elaborate and flamboyant skins of marble and granite which were common in American cities.

Westmount Charter School is a charter school for gifted learners based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada which educates students from kindergarten to grade 12. It was founded in 1996 as ABC (Action for Bright Children) Charter Public School by the Action for Bright Children Society, The school started with 116 students, from grades one to three, and is now hosting a student body of approximately 1,300 in grades kindergarten through 12. The name was officially changed from ABC Charter Public School to Westmount Charter School in 2002, though the school remains publicly funded. Westmount's first graduation occurred in June 2006.

The Olympic Oval in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is North America's first covered speed skating oval; it was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics and opened 36 years ago on September 27, 1987. Located on the University of Calgary campus, it is the official designated training centre for Speed Skating Canada and the Elite Athlete Pathway.

Foothills Stadium, formerly Burns Stadium, is a stadium in Calgary, Alberta. It is primarily used for baseball, and was formerly home to the Calgary Cannons AAA baseball club until September 2002, when the team relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. It was later the home field of the Calgary Vipers baseball team of the North American League. It originally opened in 1966. The most notable early team to play in the stadium was the Calgary Expos of the Pioneer League. The stadium has undergone several renovations, notably in 1985 prior to the arrival of the Calgary Cannons. Most recently the stadium was refurbished in 2004 including the installation of ViperVision Video Screen in right field. It holds 6,000 people.

University Heights is a residential neighbourhood in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is bordered by the University of Calgary, McMahon Stadium, the Alberta Children's Hospital and Foothills Hospital. It is a relatively small neighbourhood and is bounded to the north by 24 Avenue NW, to the east by University Drive NW, to the south by 16 Avenue NW (Trans-Canada Highway) and to the west by Shaganappi Trail NW. University Heights was established in 1963. It is represented in the Calgary City Council by the Ward 1 councillor.

The opening ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics was held on February 13, 1988, beginning at 1:30 p.m. MST (16:30 UTC, February 13) at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The event was officially opened by Governor General Jeanne Sauvé on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. An audience of 60,000 spectators was in attendance at the venue, with 2,600 athletes and officials.

The closing ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics was held on February 28, 1988, beginning at 19:30 MST (3:30 UTC, February 29) at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The closing ceremony had 60,000 people in attendance, including 10,000 volunteers who received free admission. It was the first Winter Olympics to stage a closing ceremony outdoors.The closing ceremonies consisted of a Parade of Athletes less formal then the opening ceremonies as athletes from all nations paraded together. The world's largest temporary ice rink was built in McMahon Stadium to showcase amateur figure skating teams as part of the closing ceremonies.The Olympic flag was lowered and Mayor of Calgary Ralph Klein passed the flag to the president of the IOC who passed it on to Henri Dujol, Mayor of the French city of Albertville, the host of the 1992 Winter Olympics. After a speech by the President of the Organizing Committee for the Games, the President of the IOC proclaims the closing of the Calgary Games and the Olympic flame was slowly extinguished.
