Elizabeth City is a city in Pasquotank and Camden counties, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 18,629. Elizabeth City is the county seat and most populous city of Pasquotank County. It is the cultural, economic and educational hub of the sixteen-county Historic Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina.Elizabeth City is the center of the Elizabeth City Micropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 64,094 as of 2010. It is part of the larger Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area. The city is the economic center of the region, as well as home to many historic sites and cultural traditions. Marketed as the "Harbor of Hospitality", Elizabeth City has had a long history of shipping due to its location at a narrowed bend of the Pasquotank River. Founded in 1794, Elizabeth City prospered early on from the Dismal Swamp Canal as a mercantile city. Later it developed industry and other commercial focus. While Elizabeth City still retains extensive waterfront property, it is linked to neighboring counties and cities by contemporary highways and bridges to support other transportation. It hosts one of the largest United States Coast Guard bases in the nation.

The Grice–Fearing House is the oldest house (ca. 1798) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, located at 200 South Road Street. It is a contributing property in the Shepard Street–South Road Street Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was originally built for Francis Grice. After his death, his widow Mary married Isaiah Fearing, thus providing the house with its name.The house is now operated as a two-suite bed and breakfast.

Southgate Mall is the sole enclosed shopping center in the sixteen county Historic Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. Located on West Ehringhaus Street (US 17 Business) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, the mall is currently anchored by Belk and until its closing in early April 2015; JCPenney. Construction of the mall started in 1967 at a cost of $3 million ($21.2 million in 2014 dollars), opening two years later as Southgate Plaza Shopping Center with senior anchors Belk-Tyler and W. T. Grant. Junior anchors Winn-Dixie and Peoples Drug filled positions intermediate to anchors and smaller shops.

Elizabeth City Water Plant is a historic municipal water plant located at Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina. The complex includes the contributing Elizabeth City Water Plant Building, Coagulation Basin (1926), Raw Water Pump House (c. 1935), the Circular Finished Water Reservoir (1926), and the Raw Water Reservoir (c. 1935). The Elizabeth City Water Plant Building is a Mission Revival style brick building sheathed in stucco and built in 1926. It consists of a projecting three-bay three-story central pavilion flanked on each side by identical two-story blocks. It is topped by a broad hipped roof covered by green clay tiles.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The North Carolina Potato Festival, originally known as the Albemarle Potato Festival, is an annual tradition in northeastern North Carolina that celebrates one of the region's most important crops. The festival ran from 1940 through 1970 before it was revived in 2001. It takes place annually in mid-May in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.In 2009, it was made the official state Irish Potato Festival of North Carolina. The festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned for 2022.

Notable contributing buildings include the John S. Burgess House (c. 1847), Scott-Culpepper House (c. 1845), Luther C. Lassiter House (1908-1913), William F. Williams House (1908-1914), Miles Pritchard House (c. 1909), Mack N. Sawyer House (1895), the Godfrey-Foreman House (c. 1893), Dr. Walter W. Sawyer House (1915), City Road United Methodist Church (1900-1902), Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church (1902), former Elizabeth City High School (1923), and S. L. The district developed from the mid-19th to mid-20th century, and includes representative examples of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Bungalow, and American Foursquare style architecture. Notable contributing buildings include the Sawyer–Pailin–Overman House (c. 1857), Antioch Presbyterian Church (c. 1896), (former) St. Catherine Catholic Church (1941), Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church (1904), Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church (1888), (former) St. Phillips Episcopal Church (1893), the Sundry Shop (c. 1881), Rex Cleaning Works (1932), Good Samaritan Hall (1896), and Republican Star Odd Fellows Hall (c. 1899).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The Episcopal Cemetery is a historic Episcopal cemetery and national historic district located at Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina. It is a 1.5-acre (0.61 ha) cemetery that was opened in 1825. In 1994, it included one contributing site, 26 contributing structures, and 56 contributing objects. The cemetery is the burial place of John C. B. Ehringhaus and Tillie Ehringhaus, Governor and First Lady of North Carolina from 1933 to 1937.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The Museum of the Albemarle is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It serves as the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History. This area of North Carolina is sometimes considered the birthplace of English North America, with close proximity to Roanoke Island and the "Lost Colony" of 1585. Established in 1967 in a former NC Highway Patrol station south of Elizabeth City, the Museum has since expanded with a new four-story museum building in 2008 located on the Downtown Waterfront. The core exhibit is "Our Story - Life in the Albemarle", a 6200 sq. ft. gallery featuring over 700 artifacts that interpret the rich history and culture of the 16-county Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. Mid-Atlantic Christian University (MACU) is a private Christian university in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It is supported by Christian churches and churches of Christ, which is part of the Restoration Movement. MACU awards bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, and certificates. MACU started as Roanoke Bible College with the primary goal of preacher training to serve the Church of Christ/Christian Churches of eastern North Carolina and Virginia.

Northeastern High School (often abbreviated NHS) is a public school located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, in the United States. It was founded in 1969, replacing Elizabeth City High School, P.W. Moore High School, and Central High School. Northeastern's mascot is the Eagle. Its school colors are green and gold. It is one of two high schools in Pasquotank County; the other is Pasquotank County High School.
