Peters Mountain (Pennsylvania)

Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area is a 783-acre (317 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Middle Paxton and Wayne Townships, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It is dominated by large hardwood trees and offers opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing and hunting. Environmental education programs are available. It is named after Joseph E. Ibberson, who donated the land for use as a conservation area on December 9, 1998. Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area is off Pennsylvania Route 225 on Peters Mountain. It was opened to the public in 2000.

Shoop Site (designated 33DA20) is a prehistoric archaeological site in Jackson Township and Wayne Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. It is the site of a large Paleoindian campsite, dated to 9,000-9,500 BC. It was first discovered in the 1930s by George Gordon, and also studied by Frank Soday who later discovered the Quad site. In the decades since its discovery, the site has yielded approximately 7,000 artifacts scattered over at least 37 acres for lithic analysis. Additionally, there is a large number of “astoundingly reworked” fluted Projectile points and endscrapers, and fully 98% of the artifacts are made from a lithic material that originates hundreds of miles away.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Dauphin County is included in the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located within the county is Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, site of the 1979 nuclear core meltdown. The nuclear power plant closed in 2019.

The land for the conservation area was donated to the state by real estate developer Alex Boyd in 1999. Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area is a sanctuary for mature trees and an environment education study area. The park is on Blue Mountain just off Pennsylvania Route 443.

The area began as a Post Office and is named for a Quaker family from York County who settled near the mouth of Powells Creek around 1760.
