Lane Park

The Birmingham Zoo is a zoological park that opened in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. The Birmingham Zoo is an independent, not for profit, 501(c)(3) organization, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), participating in AZA Species Survival Plans (SSP). It is the only AZA accredited zoo in the state of Alabama. Approximately 550 animals of 195 species call the Birmingham Zoo home, including sea lions, zebras, rhinos, elephants, and other endangered species from six continents.

The John D. and Katherine Gleissner Lustron House is a historic enameled steel prefabricated house in Birmingham, Alabama. Designed and constructed by the Lustron Corporation, this example is one of three confirmed to have been built in Birmingham. Another, the Bernice L. Wright Lustron House, is just one house over from the Gleissner Lustron House.Lustron houses were only produced during a two-year period, with 2,495 known to have been made. A majority of those originally constructed (roughly 2,000) are still standing today. Many of those that do remain have been altered significantly. Twenty Lustron houses are known to have been ordered in Alabama, although it is not clear if twenty were erected. Only eleven remained in 2000.The house forms part of the National Register of Historic Places' Lustron Houses in Alabama MPS. It was placed on the National Register on February 24, 2000, due to its architectural significance. The house was slated for demolition in 2015 to make way for a condominium development.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is 67.5-acre (27.3 ha) of botanical gardens located adjacent to Lane Park at the southern foot of Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. The gardens are home to over 12,000 different types of plants, 25 unique gardens, more than 30 works of original outdoor sculpture, and several miles of walking paths. With more than 350,000 annual visitors, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens qualify as one of Alabama's top free-admittance tourist attractions. The gardens include a garden center that has a library (the largest public horticulture library in the U.S.), auditorium, Linn-Henley Lecture Hall, Blount Education Center, Gerlach Plant Information Center, Alabama Cooperative Extension System office, Arrington Children's Plant Adventure Zone, and a restaurant.

The Mountain Brook Estates Building is a commercial building in the planned community of Mountain Brook, Alabama. The neo-medieval building was built as the commercial center of the suburban community. Built in 1928, it is a steel structure clad with half-timbering meant to evoke an idealized English town center. Mountain Brook Estates is one of the three most significant examples of a romanticized suburb in the United States, along with Grosse Pointe, Michigan and Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Redmont Garden Apartments is a historic complex of four buildings in Mountain Brook, Alabama. It was built by the B. L. Jackson Company with a mortgage from the New York Life Insurance Company supported by the Federal Housing Administration. Construction began in 1938, and it was completed in 1939.The buildings were designed by architect Raymond C. Snow in the Colonial Revival style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since August 5, 1993.

The Alabama Policy Institute (API) is a nonprofit, conservative think tank located in Alabama. According to the organization's mission statement, it is "dedicated to influencing public policy in the interest of the preservation of free markets, limited government and strong families." API is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Red Mountain Expressway Cut, also known as the Red Mountain Geological Cut, is a section of Red Mountain that was blasted and removed in the 1960s to allow the Red Mountain Expressway to enter downtown Birmingham, Alabama. This highway links Birmingham with its southern suburbs of Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia Hills. It has spurred suburban growth towards the south of Birmingham. This section also provides the route for U.S. Route 31 (US 31) to the south (the Montgomery Highway) and US 280 to the southeast. The resultant cut exposes geological strata spanning millions of years (150 million years of geological time within 650 feet or 200 metres of exposure), including the red ore seam that spurred Birmingham's development. A new species of Lower Silurian (middle Llandovery epoch) phacopsid trilobite, Acaste birminghamensis, was first collected from exposures on Red Mountain. Named for the city, the new species was published in May 1972.The cut was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987.

The Red Mountain Suburbs Historic District, in Jefferson County, Alabama, including parts of Birmingham and Mountain Brook, is a 333 acres (135 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The listing included 392 contributing buildings and three contributing structures.It is roughly bounded by Crest and Argyle and Altamont, Country Club, Salisbury, and Lanark Roads. Its boundaries were drawn to include the original (early 1900s) plats of the Valley View, Milner Heights, Altamont/Redmont Drives and Redmont Park subdivisions, all being "exclusive and upper middle class suburban neighboods".It is asserted to include the state's best examples of Tudor Revival, Spanish Revival, Chateauesque, Classical Revival, Dutch Revival and Colonial Revival architecture, as well as great landscape architecture.

The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in Alabama, United States. It is the third oldest school system in Jefferson County preceded only by the Birmingham and Bessemer School Systems. The Jefferson County School System was created in 1896, and initially served all unincorporated communities and cities in the county other than Birmingham and Bessemer. Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s various other cities began to establish their own separate systems (i.e., Homewood, Midfield, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, etc.). Today the County system serves students in those unincorporated areas of Jefferson County, Alabama such as Alliance, Bagley, Concord, Corner, Forestdale, McCalla, Minor, Mt. Olive, and Oak Grove. It also includes students who reside in the cities of Adamsville, Clay, Fultondale, Gardendale, Graysville, Hueytown, Irondale, Kimberly, Morris, Pinson, Pleasant Grove, and Warrior among others.
