Red Mountain Suburbs Historic District

The Avalon in Birmingham, Alabama is a two-building Tudor Revival-style complex at 3005-3015 Highland Ave. and 3000-3020 13th Ave. S, which was built in 1925 and 1927. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.It was designed by architect Charles H. McCauley for the Birmingham Realty Company, successor firm to the Elyton Land Company, which was major in designing the layout of the city of Birmingham and which built Highland Avenue.

The Redmont Garden Apartments is a historic complex of four buildings in Mountain Brook, Alabama. It was built by the B. L. Jackson Company with a mortgage from the New York Life Insurance Company supported by the Federal Housing Administration. Construction began in 1938, and it was completed in 1939.The buildings were designed by architect Raymond C. Snow in the Colonial Revival style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since August 5, 1993.

Independent Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) located on the Southside in Birmingham, Alabama. Initially started by a group of 25 following controversy over doctrinal issues within a local congregation, the church now has approximately 1800 members.

The historic Donnelly House, an example of Neo-classical architecture, was built in 1905 as the residence of James W. Donnelly. Mr. Donnelly was an industrialist, manufacturer, real-estate developer, philanthropist, and civic leader. After retiring from Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, he moved south to Birmingham, where this magnificent Georgian-colonial mansion had been constructed, featuring over 12,000 square feet (1,100 m2) of living space and spectacular white marble floors. While the Donnelly House has served primarily as a private residence, it was also the home of the Birmingham Civic Ballet during the 1950s. Ultimately, the home was opened as a venue for weddings, business meetings and other activities. The house was purchased by Carl Schoettlin in 2011. The house was fully renovated by Schoettlin Building Company. Currently the house is an entertainment venue specializing in weddings, receptions, parties, etc. The house is managed by Carl Schoettlin.The home was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on May 20, 1975. It is also a contributing property to the Highland Avenue Historic District, a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is 67.5-acre (27.3 ha) of botanical gardens located adjacent to Lane Park at the southern foot of Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. The gardens are home to over 12,000 different types of plants, 25 unique gardens, more than 30 works of original outdoor sculpture, and several miles of walking paths. With more than 350,000 annual visitors, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens qualify as one of Alabama's top free-admittance tourist attractions. The gardens include a garden center that has a library (the largest public horticulture library in the U.S.), auditorium, Linn-Henley Lecture Hall, Blount Education Center, Gerlach Plant Information Center, Alabama Cooperative Extension System office, Arrington Children's Plant Adventure Zone, and a restaurant.

Highland Park Golf Course is a public golf course in Birmingham, Alabama. Established in 1903 as the Country Club of Birmingham, it is the oldest golf course in the state of Alabama.Bobby Jones won the Birmingham Country Club Invitational at Highland Park in 1916 at the age of 14.Charlie Boswell shot an 81 on the course on Oct. 5, 1956. The course was renamed the Charlie Boswell Golf Course at Highland Park. Today, Boswell is honored by a plaque on the first tee box. Honors Golf took over the golf club and made course and course house improvements and changed the name back to Highland Park Golf Course.

The Highland Park neighborhood is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Birmingham, Alabama. Originally developed as a suburb of Birmingham by the Elyton Land Company, it lies approximately two miles south of the city’s central business district and is one of the more prosperous and diverse neighborhoods within the city. Homes and apartments built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries exist alongside contemporary condominiums and office buildings. New developments continue to arise in and around the neighborhood.

The Bernice L. Wright Lustron House is a historic enameled steel prefabricated house in Birmingham, Alabama. Designed and constructed by the Lustron Corporation, this example is one of three confirmed to have been built in Birmingham. Another, the John D. and Katherine Gleissner Lustron House, is just one house over from the Wright Lustron House.Lustron houses were only produced during a two-year period, with 2,495 known to have been made. Only roughly 2,000 of these are still in existence. Many of those that do remain have been altered significantly. Twenty Lustron houses are known to have been ordered in Alabama, although it is not clear if twenty were erected. Only eleven remained in 2000.The house forms part of the National Register of Historic Places' Lustron Houses in Alabama MPS. It was placed on the National Register on February 24, 2000, due to its architectural significance. The house is slated for demolition in 2015 to make way for a condominium development.

Birmingham Country Club, located in Birmingham, Alabama, was founded in 1898 as the Country Club of Birmingham. It moved in 1900 from North Birmingham to Lakeview, then again in 1926 to a site in Shades Valley, now within the city of Mountain Brook. The Lakeview club hosted former president Theodore Roosevelt and several Women's Southern Golf Association tournaments. The present site features two 18-hole courses designed in the 1920s by Donald Ross.

Saint Rose Academy, located in Birmingham, Alabama atop Red Mountain, is a private, co-educational Catholic elementary school run by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia.

The Red Mountain Expressway Cut, also known as the Red Mountain Geological Cut, is a section of Red Mountain that was blasted and removed in the 1960s to allow the Red Mountain Expressway to enter downtown Birmingham, Alabama. This highway links Birmingham with its southern suburbs of Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia Hills. It has spurred suburban growth towards the south of Birmingham. This section also provides the route for U.S. Route 31 (US 31) to the south (the Montgomery Highway) and US 280 to the southeast. The resultant cut exposes geological strata spanning millions of years (150 million years of geological time within 650 feet or 200 metres of exposure), including the red ore seam that spurred Birmingham's development. A new species of Lower Silurian (middle Llandovery epoch) phacopsid trilobite, Acaste birminghamensis, was first collected from exposures on Red Mountain. Named for the city, the new species was published in May 1972.The cut was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987.
