Major thoroughfares that wind through the suburb include Sunrise Highway, Southern State Parkway, Merrick Road, Bellmore Avenue, Jerusalem Avenue, and Newbridge Road.

Sanford H. Calhoun High School is a public high school located in Merrick, New York. Established in 1958, Calhoun is one of three high schools in the Bellmore–Merrick Central High School District, and acts as a magnet school for several programs. As of the 2018–19 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,224 students and 110.6 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.1:1. There were 146 students (11.9% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 16 (1.3% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Oakfield Cemetery (also known as the Old Burying Ground) is a 70 X 438 tract of land located on Oakfield Avenue in Wantagh, New York, in the United States. It is covered with grass and lined with sporadically placed oak trees, and is surrounded by residential homes. Backyard fencing of homes also surrounds the land on both sides. The cemetery is now kept locked to keep vandals out. It was first deeded as a cemetery on March 18, 1851, and is noted as the second cemetery in the area to be used by Black residents of Wantagh, many of whom were descendants of freed Jackson family slaves. It is most noted as being the final resting place of four black Civil War soldiers. The Town of Hempstead takes care of this property. It is nicknamed by area residents as "Indian Burying Ground."

Bellmore–Merrick Central High School District is the central high school district of the Long Island hamlets of Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick, and North Merrick, New York. More than 5000 students, grades 7-12, attend the Bellmore–Merrick secondary schools. There are three high schools (grades 9-12) and two (previously four) middle schools (grades 7-8) in the district.

John F. Kennedy High School is a public high school located in Bellmore, New York. It is one of three high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 999 students and 78.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.2:1. There were 98 students (9.4% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 5 (0.5% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.The school is open during normal school months. Its newspaper is the Cougar Crier. In local athletics, this school is referred to as Bellmore JFK to avoid confusion with the nearby Plainview JFK.

Wantagh ( WAHN-taw) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York, United States. The population was 18,613 at the time of the 2020 census. Wantagh is known as "The Gateway to Jones Beach".
