The Wellington District was a historic district in Upper Canada and its successor, Canada West, which existed until 1849. It was formed in June 1840 from townships transferred from certain other districts: For electoral purposes, it was called Waterloo County and the district town was Guelph.Upon the passage of the Act of Union 1840, for electoral purposes Erin Township was attached to Halton County, which became known as the East Riding of Halton, and the remaining townships of Wellington that had previously been part of Halton became known as the West Riding of Halton.When the East and West Ridings were renamed for their respective counties in 1845, the township of Erin continued to be part of Halton for electoral purposes, and the township of Dumfries was similarly included for such purposes in Waterloo. At that time, Waterloo County was declared to consist of the following townships: In 1849, Wellington District was abolished, and Waterloo County remained for municipal and judicial purposes. The territory of the Bruce Peninsula became part of Waterloo in 1849, but was later withdrawn and transferred to Bruce County in 1851.

Hastings Stadium, officially the David E. Hastings Stadium, is a baseball park located in the Exhibition Park area of Guelph, Ontario. It is home to the Guelph Royals of the Intercounty Baseball League and the home of the Guelph Silvercreeks. It is named after a local baseball player who was active from 1943 to 1968, first in Minor Baseball and then in the Senior Intercounty league. He then went on to manage the Guelph Junior and Senior teams until 1973. He was also mayor of Guelph, 1958–1960.The current grandstand was built in 1987 to replace the one built in 1924. The infield was renovated in the fall of 2013 by the City of Guelph Sportsfield Department, the field underwent renovations to the outfield fencing, bull pens, and foul poles, and replacement of the scoreboard and sound system in 2017.

This riding has had a Liberal MP since 1993.From 2008 until his decision not to run in 2015, the riding's parliamentary seat was held by Liberal MP Frank Valeriote. Valeriote had announced his intention to retire on November 15, 2014. The Liberal candidate in the 2015 federal election in the riding was Lloyd Longfield, who previously served as president of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce. Longfield was first elected on October 19, 2015 and reelected on October 21, 2019.
