The Eastern State Penitentiary, also known as ESP, is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located at 2027 Fairmount Avenue between Corinthian Avenue and North 22nd Street in the Fairmount section of the city, and was operational from 1829 until 1971. The penitentiary refined the revolutionary system of separate incarceration first pioneered at the Walnut Street Jail which emphasized principles of reform rather than punishment.Notorious criminals such as Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton were held inside its innovative wagon wheel design. James Bruno (Big Joe) and several male relatives were incarcerated here between 1936 and 1948 for the alleged murders in the Kelayres massacre of 1934, before they were paroled. At its completion, the building was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States, and quickly became a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. The prison is currently a U.S. National Historic Landmark, which is open to the public as a museum for tours seven days a week, twelve months a year, 10 am to 5 pm.

The school campus comprises two distinct buildings along 22nd Street, both of which were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Spring Garden is a neighborhood in central Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, bordering Center City on the north. Spring Garden is a neighborhood that combines diverse residential neighborhoods and significant cultural attractions. The residential areas on the north side of the neighborhood (North of Spring Garden Street) are composed mostly of brick and brownstone three-story townhouses built during the mid-to-late 19th century. The houses include townhouses in the Italianate style, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Venetian Gothic. Many streets (including Green Street and Spring Garden Street) include "terraced" set ups, which include a small gardened plot, often raised, in front of the house. The residential areas to the south are dominated by taller, multi-family buildings built during the 20th century. The museum area, also to the south of Spring Garden Street, includes the Rodin Museum, the Central Library of Philadelphia, and the Barnes Museum. Before consolidation of Philadelphia, Spring Garden was a district of Philadelphia County.

Ridge Avenue Farmers' Market was a historic farmers' market building located in the Francisville neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1875, and was a one-story brick and brownstone building with basement. It was an irregular rectangular shape, measuring 92 feet by 262 feet. The Market was built in 1875. One of the founding members was Grant Webster. After his death, the management of the Market was assumed by his son, Harold J. Webster. Harold managed the Market until it closed in the 1970’s. It featured Gothic arched openings and a high peaked, wood open truss roof with jerkinhead end gables. It has been demolished and the property developed for housing.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Girard College is an independent college preparatory five-day boarding school located on a 43-acre campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the eastern United States. The school was founded and permanently endowed from the shipping and banking fortune of Stephen Girard after his death in 1831. Girard College enrolls academically capable students, grades one through twelve, and awards a full scholarship with a yearly value of approximately $63,000 to every child admitted. The scholarship covers most of the costs of attending Girard, including tuition, room and board, books and school uniforms. The scholarship may be renewed yearly until the student's high school graduation. Applicants must be at least six years old (by the first day of first grade), demonstrate good social skills and the potential for scholastic achievement, and come from a single-parent, low-income (determined by HUD guidelines) family. Girard accepts students on the basis of previous school records, admissions testing, a visit and interviews. The process is conducted without preference for race, gender, religion or national origin. Girard's mission is to prepare students for advanced education and life as informed, ethical, and productive citizens through a rigorous educational program that promotes intellectual, social, and emotional growth.

On the morning of January 5, 2022, a fire tore through a row house converted into apartments in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Twelve people died, nine of them children, and two others were injured. Five additional people escaped from the first floor unit with minor injuries. The fire happened just four days before the 2022 Bronx apartment fire, also in the Northeastern United States.

Lydia Darrah School is a historic school building located in the Francisville neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1926–1927. It is a three-story, rectangular brick building with a raised basement in the Moderne-style. It features terracotta trim, fluted columns, and an undulating parapet wall. It was named for Revolutionary War figure Lydia Darrah (1728-1789). It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The Thomas Eakins House is a historic house at 1727-29 Mount Vernon Street in the Spring Garden section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Built about 1854, it was for most of his life the home of Thomas Eakins (1844-1916), one of the most influential American artist of the late 19th century. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965, and is now home to a local artist cooperative.

Mural Arts Philadelphia is a non-profit organization that supports the creation of public murals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1986 as Mural Arts Program, the organization was renamed in 2016. Having ushered more than 3,000 murals into being, it calls itself "the nation’s largest public art program". As of 2022, the organization says it runs 50 to 100 public art projects each year; it also works to maintain existing murals. The program was founded under the direction of the local artist Jane Golden, as part of the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network, with to facilitate collaboration between professional artists and prosecuted graffiti writers to create new murals in the city. The program, which employs more than 300 artists at least part-time, is one of the largest employers of artists in Philadelphia. The program also hires more than 100 prosecuted graffiti writers every year and involves them in the creation of murals around Philadelphia. In 2006, the program employed 36 former graffiti artists as staff members on permanent payroll.It also works with community groups to educate and children in the arts and involve them in the creation of the murals; in 2006, it involved more than 300 children a year.The Mural Arts Program is responsible for the creation of the largest mural in Philadelphia, at 600 feet (180 m) in length. Titled History of Immigration, it displays settlers of different ethnicities who settled in Philadelphia over time. The program has been criticized for supporting the criminalization of graffiti and for hiring non-Philadelphia artists.

Mulford Building is a historic light manufacturing loft building located in the Spring Garden neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1912–1913, and is a nine-story, steel frame building clad in brick in the Classical Revival style. It measures 400 by 100 feet (122 by 30 m). A four-story addition was built in 1934. It originally housed clothing manufacturers, until purchased by the H. K. Mulford Company, pharmaceutical manufacturers, in 1918. They occupied the building until 1963, after which it again housed clothing manufacturers.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
