Lake Strom Thurmond

J. Strom Thurmond Dam, also known in Georgia as Clarks Hill Dam, is a concrete-gravity and embankment dam located 22 miles (35 km) north of Augusta, Georgia on the Savannah River at the border of South Carolina and Georgia, creating Lake Strom Thurmond. U.S. Route 221 (and Georgia State Route 150 on the Georgia side of the state line) cross it. The dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1946 and 1954 for the purposes of flood control, hydroelectricity and downstream navigation. The concrete structure of the dam spans 1,096 feet (334 m) and rises 204 feet (62 m) above the riverbed, housing a power plant with an installed 380 MW capacity. The Dam has prevented over $3.1 million in estimated flood damage annually and also provides recreation, water quality, water supply, along with fish and wildlife management.Since 1988, the official name of the dam is after Strom Thurmond, a longtime Senator. Originally accepted in Georgia, the dam is named after revolutionary war hero, Elijah Clark, who is also buried on the western banks of the lake on acreage that is now Elijah Clark State Park and Recreation Area. The USACE developed the Christopher D. Spiller pollinator trail in the site of housing for workers during the construction of the dam. They are also helping restore the longleaf pine on the site and around the dam which includes Piedmont prairie and longleaf pine habitat.

The Little River is a 72-mile-long (116 km) tributary of the Savannah River in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is formed by the juncture of its North and South forks 5 miles (8 km) north of Crawfordville, and it flows generally east to Clark Hill Lake, where it joins the Savannah River 2 miles (3 km) north of the dam.

Clarks Hill is a census-designated place (CDP) in McCormick County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 376 at the 2000 census.

Steven's Creek Heritage Preserve is a nature preserve in the US State of South Carolina. It is managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. It covers 434 acres (1.76 km2) in McCormick County and Edgefield County, and was established to protect rare animal and plant species. Webster's Salamander and Miccosukee gooseberry are among the species which have few populations outside the preserve. The nearest population center is Clarks Hill, about two road miles (3–4 km) to the southwest. The site was identified in 1957 by Albert E. Radford of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He noticed exceptional diversity in the tree, shrub and herb layers on the bluffs overlooking Steven's Creek, and documented six plant species which had been unknown in South Carolina up to that time. Another five species were known from only one other South Carolina location. Many of these rare species were plentiful at the site, and remain prominent there today. A remarkable feature of this plant community is that a palmetto, Sabal minor, occurs near northern inland wildflowers such as Asarum canadense. Four trillium species are also present.Soils of the bluffs were found to be atypical for South Carolina. Most of the state's soils are acidic with pH near or below 5. However, some topsoils in the preserve had pH readings near 7 -- neutral on the scale. This is more typical of base-rich sites in Appalachian coves and the Midwest, where many plants rare to South Carolina are abundant. These soils correspond most closely to the Cartecay and Toccoa series which are loam or sandy loam-textured Entisols. Along Steven's Creek are alluvial silt loam Inceptisols of the Riverview series. The majority of the preserve, away from the bluffs, is underlain by acidic sandy loam Ultisols of the Cataula, Hiwassee, Louisburg, and Pacolet series typical of the South Carolina Piedmont. These upland soils support mixed pine and hardwood forest over most of the preserve except in the southwest corner which has pure stands of pine.

Modoc is a census-designated place (CDP) in McCormick County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 256 at the 2000 census, and 218 at the 2010 census, a decline of 14.8%. The Modoc CDP was named for the Modoc indigenous tribe of Northern California, some members of which had been captured after the Modoc War. They were sent, first to the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and then, a few, on to an area on the left (east) bank of the Savannah River in what was then Edgefield County, South Carolina. The 1930 Census of the township of Modoc, by then in McCormick County, had no listings of any "Indians".

Kiokee is an unincorporated community in Columbia County in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located along Georgia State Route 104, 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Evans and 17 miles (27 km) northwest of downtown Augusta.

Greenbrier High School is a 5-A high school located in Evans, Georgia, a suburb of Augusta, Georgia, United States. For the 2010–11 school year, Greenbrier High School enrolled more than 1,600 students in grades 9 through 12. The school mascot is "Wolfie Wolfman" and the school colors are deep green, gold, and white.

WAEG (92.3 FM) is a commercial smooth jazz radio station in Evans, Georgia, broadcasting to the Augusta, Georgia area. The station is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to broadcast with an effective radiated power (ERP) of 6 kW. The station's studios (which are shared with its other sister stations) are located at the aptly named intersection of Broadcast Drive and Radio Station Road in North Augusta, South Carolina, while a transmitter tower is located northwest of Evans.

Hopewell Rosenwald School is a historic Rosenwald school located near Clarks Hill in McCormick County, South Carolina. It was built in 1926–1927, and is a One Teacher Community Plan school consisting of two smaller rooms and one large room.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Hamilton Branch State Park is located near the town of Plum Branch in McCormick County. It sits on a 731-acre peninsula in Lake Strom Thurmond. The park became part of the South Carolina State Park Service in 1972, with land leased from the United States Army Corps of Engineers.Amenities in the park include lakefront camping sites, picnic shelters, a playground and two boat ramps for access to the lake. The park office sells limited supplies and souvenirs and also rents out a number of games for guests. A short bike trail provides access to the Steven's Creek Bike Trail. The park is a popular spot for geocaching, fishing and bird watching.

Snead (also Sneads) is an unincorporated community in Columbia County, Georgia, United States.

The Kiokee Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia is the oldest continuing Southern Baptist congregation in the state. The church building was built in 1808. Its founder, Daniel Marshall, was the first great Baptist leader in Georgia. Kiokee Baptist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
