Vila do Bispo e Raposeira

Vila do Bispo is a former civil parish in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the southern Algarve, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Vila do Bispo e Raposeira.

Vila do Bispo (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvilɐ ðu ˈβiʃpu] ) is a municipality (concelho) in the Portuguese Algarve. It has 5,717 inhabitants in an area of 179.06 km2.

Raposeira is a village and former civil parish in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, District of Faro, in Algarve region, Portugal. It is told that it is named after fox because raposa means fox in Portuguese. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Vila do Bispo e Raposeira. It has an area of 25.71 km² and 441 inhabitants (2001). It is one of the parishes covered by the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Raposeira was one of the places where the 15th-century Portuguese prince Henry the Navigator set up residence during his lifetime. Henry was known to have attended mass at the isolated but spacious chapel dedicated to the cult of Our Lady of Guadalupe, believed to have been originally erected by the Templar knights in the latter part the 13th century, and one of the few Medieval structures in this region of the Algarve to have survived the 1755 earthquake intact. There are several groups of megalithic menhirs on the way to the beach. It became a hotspot for national and international road travellers, campers and surfers, and many foreigners have done retirement settlement there. People from Germany, England and Netherlands can be found in the area, as well as from the rest of Europe. The place is windy in summer. Wind blows mostly from two sides: cold wind blows from Monchique a nearby area popular for medronho (a very strong local alcoholic drink) but on the other side, coming from Morocco, a hot wind blows. In the centre of Raposeira, local Portuguese bars, a small cafe restaurant and a pizza restaurant can be found. The village is usually very quiet and peaceful. Bus transport to Sagres and Vila do Bispo is available from 6:00 in the morning to 8:00 in the evening, sometimes differing on public holidays.

The Hermitage of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Portuguese: Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe), also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Portuguese: Capela de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe) is located between the towns of Budens and Raposeira, in the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, Faro District, in the Algarve region of Portugal. It is particularly well known as a supposed location where the pioneer navigator Prince Henry the Navigator (1394–1460) used to pray. In addition to a chapel, there is a small museum dedicated to Prince Henry.

Fort Vera Cruz (Forte de Vera Cruz in Portuguese), also known as Fort Vera Cruz da Figueira (Forte da Vera Cruz da Figueira in Portuguese) or Figueira Fort, consist of the remains of a fort located in Vila do Bispo, in Algarve, Portugal.

Sagres is a civil parish in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the southern Algarve of Portugal. It has 1,894 inhabitants (2021) in an area of 34.37 square kilometres (13.27 sq mi). It is historically connected to the early Portuguese Age of Discovery. Sagres is near the Western end of the world's longest estimated straight-line path over land, at 11,241 km, ending near Jinjiang in the People's Republic of China.

Sagres Point (Ponta de Sagres, Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈsaɣɾɨʃ], from the Latin Promontorium Sacrum ‘Holy Promontory’) is a windswept shelf-like promontory located in the southwest Algarve region of southern Portugal. Only 4 km to the west and 3 km to the north lies Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente), which is usually taken as the southwesternmost tip of Europe. The vicinity of Sagres Point and Cape St. Vincent has been used for religious purposes since Neolithic times, to which standing menhirs near Vila do Bispo, a few miles from both points, attest.

Salema is a village located near Vila do Bispo in the Algarve, Portugal. Historically it was a fishing village, but at present it is a popular tourist destination.

The Fortress of Sagres, also known as Castle of Sagres or Fort of Sagres (Portuguese: Fortaleza de Sagres), is a military structure, located near the Sagres freguesia, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve region of Portugal. The fortress was built in the 15th century by order of Portugal's Infante Henry the Navigator. Heavily damaged in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, it was rebuilt in the late 18th century albeit with significant remodeling. It underwent major renovations in the 1960s and 1990s and in 2010. Inside, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, also built by Henry the Navigator, stands out. The fortress is of great historical importance because of its connection to the history of Henry the Navigator and Portuguese discoveries. In 2018 it was the most visited monument in the Algarve, probably in the entire region south of the Tagus.

The Fort of Santo António de Belixe (Fort of Saint Anthony of Beliche), which is also referred to as the Fortress of Beliche (Portuguese: Fortaleza de Belixe), is located on Cape St. Vincent in the parish of Sagres, municipality of Vila do Bispo, Faro District, in Portugal. The original date of construction is unknown but the fort was already in existence in the 16th century.

The action of 30 September 1681 was a 2-hour fight that took place on 30 September 1681 near Cape St Vincent, and was a victory for the Spanish over Brandenburg, which suffered 10 dead and 30 wounded.

The Battle of Cape St Vincent of 1641 took place on 4 November 1641 when a Spanish fleet commanded by Don Juan Alonso de Idiáquez y Robles intercepted a Dutch fleet led by Artus Gijsels during the Eighty Years' War. After a fierce battle two Dutch ships were lost but the Dutch claimed only a hundred of their men were killed; the Spanish fleet also lost two ships but over a thousand dead. The damaged Dutch fleet was forced to abandon its planned attack on the Spanish treasure fleet.
