Ballybrit Racecourse

Ballybrit (Irish: Baile an Bhriotaigh) is an electoral division and townland in the civil parish of St. Nicholas, on the outskirts of Galway city in Ireland. The townland of Ballybrit is 2.5 square kilometres (1 sq mi) in area, and is home to Ballybrit Racecourse and a business park. Evidence of ancient settlement in the area includes a medieval tower house and an earlier ringfort site. The ringfort (or cashel) was used as a graveyard since at least the early 19th century.

The Galway Races (Irish: Rásaí na Gaillimhe) is an Irish horse-racing festival that starts on the last Monday of July every year. Held at Ballybrit Racecourse in Galway, Ireland over seven days, it is one of the longest of all the race meets that occur in Ireland. The busiest days of the festival are Wednesday, when the Galway Plate is held, and Thursday, when the Galway Hurdle and Ladies' Day take place.

Greenpark Racecourse was a horse racing venue in Limerick, Ireland. In 1963 the venue was used by Limerick mayor Frances Condell to host a reception for U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy on his visit to Ireland. At the venue in 1979, Irish runner John Treacy won gold at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and a stage of Pope John Paul II's visit to Ireland was held here.Due to flooding problems, increasing traffic congestion and a limited fixture list it was decided in the mid 1990s to find a new venue for horse racing in Limerick. A suitable location was identified at Greenmount near Patrickswell and the land was purchased in 1996. The course at Greenpark closed in 1999 after 130 years of racing. The last race meeting at the venue took place on Sunday 21 March 1999. The final ever horse race run at the Greenpark Racecourse was the Finucane Electrical I.N.H. Flat Race (a bumper) over two miles. It was won by the Arthur Moore trained 'Well Ridden' on his racecourse debut. This horse was owned by well known judge Frank Clarke and went on to win five further races in his career including the prestigious Arkle Perpetual Challenge Cup at Leopardstown.11 acres of the racecourse site were sold to the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) in 2008 to build the new Limerick Greyhound Stadium which opened in October 2010. There have been numerous attempts to develop the site for residential purposes but none have been realised In June 2017 a plan for 26 houses was rejected by An Bord Pleanála. In 2019 the 116.5 acre site was sold to a group of local businessmen for €8m. As of June 2021 development of the site is still at the planning stage with a large housing development under consideration.

Maryam Mosque, or the Mary Mosque (Irish: Mosc Mhuire), also known as the Galway Mosque (Irish: Mosc na Gaillimhe) is an Ahmadi Muslim mosque, named in honour of Mary, mother of Jesus. The mosque is located in Galway, Connacht, Ireland. Opened in 2014 by Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the fifth caliph, it is the first purpose-built mosque in County Galway. The Irish born convert to Islam Iman Ibrahim Noonan is based in Galway. In July 2019 the mosque was vandalised, with windows and locks broken, and equipment stolen.

Ballybane (Irish: An Baile Bán, meaning 'the white homestead') is a suburb of Galway city in County Galway, Ireland. Ballybane is an ill-defined area, but is roughly bounded by the Old Dublin Road (R338) to the south, Mervue to the west, Ballybrit to the north, and Doughiska to the east.

Doughiska (Irish: Dabhach Uisce, meaning 'water basin') is a townland and suburb of Galway City in County Galway, Ireland. There has been continuous urban development between Doughiska and the city centre due to the growth of Galway City in the early 21st century.

The Terryland Forest Park is an urban forest park in Galway, Ireland. It was launched in January 2000 as the largest such project in Ireland with a plan to involve the citizens of Galway city in planting 500,000 native Irish trees in an area of 120 acres (0.49 km2) not far from the city centre.

Merlin Park University Hospital (Irish: Ospidéal Ollscoile Pháirc Mherlin) is a public hospital in Galway, Ireland. It is managed by Saolta University Health Care Group.

Castlegar (Irish: An Caisleán Gearr) is a village and Roman Catholic parish in County Galway, Ireland, located just outside the city of Galway. It extends from Lough Corrib across to Merlin Park by the old Galway-Dublin road. The annual Galway Races are held at Ballybrit Racecourse in the area.

St James' is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Galway area in County Galway, Ireland. The club is a member of the Galway GAA. Underage teams up to U-16's play in the Galway league and championships while they compete at higher levels as well. The club has had much success in recent years winning back to back Minor A County Championships in 2006 & 2007, as well as two Minor A West Board titles in the same years. They finished top of the Minor League in 2006. At Intermediate level, the club narrowly missed out on the 2006 and 2009 county titles. These victories indicated the future was certainly bright for the club, and in 2010, won the Galway Intermediate Championship, beating An Spidéal in the final, and also defeating Carna-Caiseal in the semi finals, after two replays. They progressed to win the Connacht Club Intermediate Championship, and from there beat Gneevguilla of Kerry in the All-Ireland Intermediate Club semi-final in Mallow, County Cork. St James' faced Lisnaskea Emmets of Fermanagh in the All Ireland intermediate club football final in Croke Park, on 12 February 2011.

Killeen Castle (Irish: Caisleán a' Chillín) is a 15th-century tower house in Killeen townland, near Castlegar, County Galway, on the western coast of Ireland. Originally built in 1493, the tower house and surrounding estate is historically associated with Blake family, one of the 14 tribes of Galway. A farmhouse was constructed abutting the western wall of the tower house during the 19th century, A large house was constructed on a hill to the north of the tower house, and with a gatehouse built on the N17 road. This large house (Killeen House) was burned down in 1922, together with many similar country houses of landed families, and subsequently demolished. The land and castle was later purchased by a farmer from Tuam who had been managing the estate. The castle was sold and passed through several owners in the late 20th century, being extended and converted into a private residence.
