Waveland is a historic plantation house and farm located near Marshall, Fauquier County, Virginia in the Carter's Run Rural Historic District. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, and the surrounding district listed in 2014.

The district contains four dwellings, the Mount Nebo Baptist Church (1902), an abandoned Morgantown School (c. 1891), a meat house, the ruins of an outbuilding, and a cemetery.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Notable buildings include the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation building (c. 1771), hosteller's house for Rector's Ordinary (c. 1800), a store and Confederate post office (c. 1805), the Elgin House (c. 1820, 1892), former Marshall Pharmacy (c. 1830), the Foley Building (c. 1830), the Gothic Revival style Trinity Episcopal Church (1849), Salem Baptist Church (1929), Marshall United Methodist Church (1899), and the Marshall Ford Company (1916), reputed to be the oldest building built as a Ford dealership in the United States that is still functioning as such.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Ashville Historic District is a national historic district located near Marshall, Fauquier County, Virginia. It encompasses 16 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in the Reconstruction-era African-American rural village of Ashville. The district contains nine properties, including the Gothic Revival style Ashville Baptist Church (1899), Ashville School (1910s), Ashville Community Cemetery, and a concentration of historic dwellings and related outbuildings.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Number 18 School in Marshall is a historic one-room school located at Marshall, Fauquier County, Virginia. It was built about 1887, and is a rectangular frame building, covered with weatherboard, and resting on a stone foundation, with a metal gable roof with a centrally located brick stove flue. Atop the roof is a reconstructed cupola. It is the only surviving unimpaired one-room schoolhouse in Fauquier County. It was originally constructed for white students, then from the fall of 1910 to 1964 (when it closed), a school for African-American children.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Old Tavern is an unincorporated community in Fauquier County, in the U.S. state of Virginia.

The Broken Hills is a range of low-lying mountains and ridges in northern Fauquier County, Virginia. The range begins just to the west of the southern Bull Run Mountains, north of Warrenton, Virginia and continues westward to the eastern edge of Blue Ridge Mountain. Interstate 66 and Virginia State Route 55 run just north of the range, while US-211 runs to the south. The stretch of US-17 between Warrenton and Marshall traverses the range. The Broken Hills form the southern border of the Loudoun Valley.

Oak Hill is an historic home of the Marshall family in Delaplane, Virginia and a working farm with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It lies north of I-66, just east of the US-17/Delaplane exit from westbound I-66. It consists of two separate houses connected by a passageway. The earlier and smaller house, a Colonial farmhouse measuring 32 ft × 30 ft (9.8 m × 9.1 m), was built in 1773 by Colonel Thomas Marshall, father of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. John Marshall lived in the Oak Hill house until his marriage in 1783.In 1819, John Marshall built an attached 40 ft × 37 ft (12 m × 11 m) temple-form Classical Revival house for his firstborn son, lawyer and future delegate Thomas. Thomas died in 1835 and his son, CSA Lt.Col. Thomas Marshall in late 1864, so Oak Hill was sold out of the Marshall family. The property is now a private residence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.Oak Hill is currently owned by Charles Chamberlain. It is located directly to the North of Barrel Oak Winery, and has three acres of Norton grapes planted on the Westward-facing slope facing I-66.

Woodside is a historic home located near Delaplane, Fauquier County, Virginia. The oldest section was built about 1800, and is located in the rear. It is of hewn log construction (possibly chestnut), clad with a brick veneer in the mid-20th century and connected to the main house by a hyphen. The main house was built in 1848, and is a two-story, three bay, brick structure in a vernacular Greek Revival style. Also on the property are the contributing log kitchen and a log smokehouse, both built about 1800.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Rectortown Historic District is a national historic district located at Rectortown, Fauquier County, Virginia. It encompasses 76 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, and 2 contributing structures in the rural village of Rectortown. The district includes dwellings dating back to the 18th century, churches, a school, an Odd Fellows hall, a post office, multiple commercial buildings, and several cemeteries that illustrate the town's growth and development. Notable buildings include the Maidstone Ordinary (c. 1763), the Rector-Slack Log House, the Ashby House (c. 1800), the Georg Mann House, The Brick Store House (c. 1840), Rector's Warehouse and Station (c. 1835), Denham, Maidstone, Rectortown United Methodist Church (1894), the Jackson-Grant House (1924), Slack's Store (1890), and the Mt. Olive Odd Fellows Lodge (1935).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It is included in the Cromwell's Run Rural Historic District.

The Plains is a town in Fauquier County, Virginia, United States. The population was 245 as of the 2020 census, up from 217 at the 2010 census. It is centered on the intersection of VA 55 (John Marshall Highway) and VA 245 (Old Tavern Road). The town of The Plains is situated off I-66. As of 2022, the mayor of The Plains is Lori Sisson.
