Faunce–McMichael Farm

The Maple River, which flows into Burt Lake, is a major river in the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The river drains sections of Cheboygan County and Emmet County, and provides an outflow for the 3,395-acre (1,374 ha) Douglas Lake.

Burt Lake is a 17,120 acres (69.3 km2) lake in Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The western shore of the lake is on the boundary with Emmet County. The lake is named after William Austin Burt, who, together with John Mullett, made a federal survey of the area from 1840 to 1843. The lake is approximately 10 miles (16 km) long from north to south, about 5 miles (8.0 km) at its widest, and 73 feet (22 m) at its deepest. Major inflows to the lake are the Maple River, which connects with nearby Douglas Lake, the Crooked River, which connects with nearby Crooked Lake, the Sturgeon River which enters the lake near the point where the Indian River flows out of the lake into nearby Mullett Lake and the Little Carp River which enters on the northern end of the lake. The lake is part of the Inland Waterway, by which one can boat from Crooked Lake several miles (km) east of Petoskey on the Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan across the northern tip of the lower peninsula's so-called mitten to Cheboygan on Lake Huron. Along with nearby Mullett Lake and Black Lake, it is noted for its population of Lake Sturgeon, which briefly held the record of largest sturgeon caught in the USA. YMCA Camp Al-Gon-Quian and Burt Lake State Park are both located on the southern shore of the lake. The unincorporated community of Burt Lake is on the southwest shore on M-68. Interstate 75 passes to the east of the lake, with two interchanges near the south end of the lake at the unincorporated community of Indian River.

The Inland Waterway or Inland Water Route is a 38-mile-long (61 km) series of rivers and lakes in the U.S. state of Michigan. With only a short portage, it forms a navigable route for small craft connecting Lake Huron and Crooked Lake, across the Northern Michigan region. Despite Little Traverse Bay being only 2 miles west of Crooked Lake, the waterway does not connect to it, making Lake Michigan inaccessible through this route. The route is in Emmet and Cheboygan counties and consists of Crooked Lake, Crooked River, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullett Lake, and the Cheboygan River. The route passes through or near the communities of Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Alanson, Indian River, Topinabee, and Cheboygan.

Tuscarora Township is a civil township of Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,038 at the 2010 census.

Alanson ( ə-LAN-sən) is a village in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 778 at the 2020 census. Alanson is in Littlefield Township on U.S. Highway 31 at the junction with M-68. Petoskey is about 12 miles (19 km) southwest on US 31 and Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about 25 miles (40 km) north. Interstate 75 is about 11 miles (18 km) to the east on M-68 at Indian River. Alanson was first settled in 1875. The Alanson post office opened with the name Hinman on January 17, 1877, and changed to Alanson on June 22, 1882.

Littlefield Township is a civil township of Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,978 at the 2010 census.

Brutus is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 218. Brutus is located within Maple River Township. It was established with the building of an inn called the Brutus House in 1874.

Burt Township is a civil township of Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 680.

The Ponshewaing Point Site (designated 20EM18) is an archaeological site located on Ponshewaing Point in Crooked Lake in Emmet County, Michigan. It was places on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.This site was in use approximately AD 800 - 1500, covering several Middle and Late Woodland period occupations. "Ponshewaing" (or "Pon-she-waing") is typically translated as "winter home," which may indicate a year-round occupation.Test excavations were completed at the Ponshewaing Point Site in 1966–67. The site was more intensively excavated by researchers from Michigan State University in 1970. Excavations revealed multiple components, including four basic pit types. Post mold shapes indicate two distinct dwellings.

Burt Lake State Park is a public recreation area covering 406 acres (164 ha) on the south shore of Burt Lake at Indian River in Cheboygan County, Michigan. The state park features over 2000 feet of sandy shoreline, swimming, boating access to the Inland Lakes Waterway, fishing on the Sturgeon River and Burt Lake, and camping facilities.

Sturgeon River is a 40.8-mile-long (65.7 km) river in the U.S. state of Michigan, flowing mostly northward through Otsego and Cheboygan counties. The Sturgeon River rises in Livingston Township, Otsego County, near the city of Gaylord at 45°01′49″N 84°38′18″W. It flows into Burt Lake in the community of Indian River. A channel formerly flowed into the Indian River at 45°24′47″N 84°36′36″W, but the main course of the river now empties directly into Burt Lake.The West Branch Sturgeon River rises in southeast Charlevoix County at 45°07′49″N 84°47′55″W and flows 17.5 miles (28.2 km) to the main stream at 45°16′19″N 84°36′03″W in Wolverine.The Little Sturgeon River rises in Cheboygan County northeast of Wolverine at 45°17′55″N 84°33′37″W and flows north on a course generally parallel to the Sturgeon River. The mouth of the Little Sturgeon River is at 45°24′19″N 84°36′32″W on the former channel of the Sturgeon River that flows into the Indian River.With an average descent of 14 feet per mile, the Sturgeon River is the fastest river in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The water is crystal-clear since it begins as a spring-fed stream. The average depth is 3–4 feet, however, there are deeper pools that can reach 5–8 feet, usually around the outside of bends.

Ponshewaing ( PON-shə-WANG) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 69. It is located within Littlefield Township.
