MoD Woodbridge

Royal Air Force Woodbridge, or more simply RAF Woodbridge, is a former Royal Air Force station located east of Woodbridge in the county of Suffolk, England. Constructed in 1943 as a RAF military airfield during the Second World War to assist damaged aircraft to land on their return from raids over Germany it was later used by the United States Air Force during the Cold War, being the primary home for the 79th and 78th Tactical Fighter Squadrons and squadrons of the 81st Fighter Wing under various designations until 1993. For many years, the 81st also operated from nearby RAF Bentwaters, with Bentwaters and Woodbridge being known as the "Twin Bases". Since 2006, it has been known as MOD Woodbridge, incorporating Woodbridge Airfield and Rock Barracks. Woodbridge Airfield is used by Army Air Corps aircraft for training and Rock Barracks are home to the newly formed 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault) of the Royal Engineers.

Deben Rural District was a rural district in the county of East Suffolk, England. It was created in 1934 by the merger of parts of the disbanded Bosmere and Claydon Rural District, the disbanded Plomesgate Rural District and the disbanded Woodbridge Rural District, under a County Review Order. It was named after the River Deben and administered from Woodbridge. Its area was reduced slightly in 1952 by an expansion of the county borough of Ipswich. On 1 April 1974, it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, and has since formed part of the District of Suffolk Coastal.

Sutton Heath is a civil parish on the former site of RAF Woodbridge, in the East Suffolk district, in the county of Suffolk, England. The parish was formed on 1 April 2012 from part of the parish of Sutton. The new parish was created following petitioning by residents to Suffolk Coastal District Council who believed it was more urban than its surrounding area in Sutton and therefore had different needs.Sutton Heath has a shop and primary school. The parish incorporates the military installation of MoD Woodbridge.

Sutton and Hollesley Heaths is a 483.3-hectare (1,194-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Woodbridge in Suffolk. Most of the site is managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust as Sutton and Hollesley Commons. It is part of the Sandlings Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, and the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.These remnants of the formerly extensive sandy heaths of the Suffolk coast consist of dry grass and heather heathland, together with areas of bracken, scrub and pine and birch woodland. Breeding birds include long-eared owls, and hen harriers roost there in the winter.There is access to the site from Heath Road.

Eyke is a village and a civil parish in the East Suffolk district, in the English county of Suffolk. It is located on the A1152 road near the town of Woodbridge. Eyke has a primary school, the manor house of Lord and Lady Lucas with scenic pond and horse paddock, and a pub. The mediaeval parish church of All Saints was restored in the 1860s. Services are normally held on the first and third Sundays of the month. The parish covers 2,749 acres with a population of 362 at the 2011 Census. The Eyke Parish Council consists of seven parish Councillors.

Rendlesham Forest is a 1,500-hectare (3,700-acre) mixed woodland in Suffolk owned by Forestry England with recreation facilities for walkers, cyclists and campers.

Crag Pit, Sutton is a 0.7-hectare (1.7-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Shottisham in Suffolk. It is in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.This small disused quarry is described by Natural England as short rabbit-grazed grassland which supports one of only two British colonies of the endangered Small Alison flowering plants. Herbs include the uncommon mossy stonecrop.As of June 2017, the site is covered with dense woodland, scrub and tall herbs, and there is little or no rabbit-grazed grassland.

Wilford is a hundred of Suffolk, consisting of 31,500 acres (127 km2).Wilford Hundred extends about 12 miles (19 km) southward from Debach to Woodbridge and from there along the eastern banks of the River Deben to Bawdsey and Hollesley Bay in the North Sea. It covers about 8 miles (13 km) of the sea coast between the mouths of the Deben and Orford Haven and further north is wedged between Carlford and Loes Hundreds. In the vale of the Deben between Wickham Market to Woodbridge and the sea it has some rich arable land but its central area around Sutton are sandy with open heaths. It is in the Deanery of Wilford in the Archdeaconry of Suffolk. Its only town of any size is Wickham Market. It was one of seven Saxon hundreds grouped together as the Wicklaw Hundreds.Listed as Wileford in the Domesday Book, the exact meaning is not known but "Wili's ford" or "willow ford" are both possible.

Shottisham is a village and civil parish in the East Suffolk district, in the county of Suffolk. It lies in the Wilford Hundred, about four and a half miles south-east of Woodbridge, between the parishes of Sutton, Alderton, Ramsholt and Hollesley, in the Bawdsey peninsula. About three miles from the coast at Hollesley Bay and Shingle Street, the village street overlooks a slight hollow of meads and copses at the road crossing of Shottisham Creek, a tributary brook of the river Deben.

Staverton Park and The Thicks, Wantisden is an 80.8-hectare (200-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Butley in Suffolk. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and a Special Area of Conservation. It is in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.This ancient park is woodland on sandy soil, with mature pollarded oaks, while The Thicks is a dense wood with hollies, some of them thought to be the largest in Britain. There is a rich lichen flora, and invertebrates include rare species.The site is private land but a public footpath goes through it.

Sutton is a village and a civil parish on the B1083 road, in the East Suffolk district, in the county of Suffolk, England. Sutton has a pub, a mobile post office and a place of worship. There is also the hamlet of Sutton Street and the Sutton Common estate nearby.

Rendlesham is a village and civil parish near Woodbridge, Suffolk, United Kingdom. It was a royal centre of authority for the king of the East Angles. The proximity of the Sutton Hoo ship burial may indicate a connection between Sutton Hoo and the East Anglian royal house, the Wuffingas. The king of Essex, Swithhelm (son of Seaxbald) who reigned from 660 to around 664, was baptised at Rendlesham by Bishop Cedd with King Æthelwold of East Anglia acting as his godfather. He died around the time of the great plague of 664 and may have been buried at the palace of Rendlesham. An archaeology project has identified a large settlement of more than 124 acres (50 hectares).Its name is recorded in Old English about 730 AD as Rendlæsham, which may mean "Homestead belonging to [a man named] Rendel", or it may come from a theorized Old English word *rendel = "little shore". The Church of St Gregory the Great in Rendlesham is a Grade I listed medieval church. Rendlesham Hall, a large manor house, was demolished in 1949.Rendlesham Forest, owned by Forestry England, is a 1,500-hectare (3,700-acre) mixed woodland with recreation facilities for walkers, cyclists and campers. It is part of the Sandlings Forest Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Rendlesham Forest incident was a series of reported sightings of unexplained pulsing lights off the coast of Orford Ness in December 1980. During the summer of 2012, scenes of the movie Fast & Furious 6 were filmed on the former RAF Bentwaters airfield.
