Altoona is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States, and part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The population was 19,565 at the 2020 census. It is home to the Adventureland amusement park and Prairie Meadows horse racing track and casino.

KGGO (94.9 FM) is a commercial radio station in Des Moines, Iowa. It is owned by Cumulus Media and airs a classic rock radio format. The station's studios and offices are in Urbandale, Iowa, with Cumulus Media's other Des Moines stations: KJJY, KHKI, KWQW, and KBGG. The Outlaw is a wooden roller coaster located at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa, near Des Moines. The Outlaw made its debut in 1993. It was the second roller coaster built by Custom Coasters International, which soon became known as one of the world's premier builders of wooden roller coasters. The original spokesperson for The Outlaw was an old miner character who appeared in television, radio, and print advertisements for Adventureland. He can still be seen outside the lower queue of The Outlaw in cartoon representation, on the "you must be this tall to ride" sign.

The Dragon was an O.D. Hopkins steel roller coaster located at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa. The coaster opened for Adventureland's sixteenth season of operation on May 12, 1990, and was partially dismantled during the spring/summer of 2020 to make way for the Dragon Slayer 4D Freespin.

The Monster is a Gerstlauer steel roller coaster at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa. It opened to the public on June 4, 2016 as the first Infinity Coaster in the United States.

Dragon Slayer is a 4D Free Spin roller coaster at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa. The coaster was built as a replacement for the Dragon looping coaster, which opened in 1990 and was mostly dismantled during the first half of 2020. Dragon Slayer began public operations on May 29, 2021.

The Tornado is a wooden roller coaster located at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa, near Des Moines. The Tornado made its debut on July 4, 1978, during Adventureland's third full season. It was designed by William Cobb, and built by the Frontier Construction Company. The name Tornado has special significance for the park. Adventureland was to open for its debut season in July 1974. However, a real tornado hit the park before it could open, and caused it to be delayed until August of that year. When the ride debuted in 1978, park advertisements exclaimed "Another Tornado has hit Adventureland!"

Southeast Polk Community School District, (often shortened to SEP, SE Polk) is a public school district located in suburban Des Moines and rural Polk County, Iowa, including the towns of Altoona, Mitchellville, Pleasant Hill, Runnells, and the surrounding rural areas. The district also stretches into small portions of Jasper and Marion Counties.The district was formed by a consolidation of several districts (most notably Runnells, Altoona, and Mitchellville; several smaller districts also merged) in 1962. The district is overseen by a seven-member Board of Education. The superintendent of schools is Dirk Halupnik.

Ivy is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The town formerly had a post office in 1900. There used to be a southern part of Ivy, but when Iowa 163 was extended to a two lane highway in the 1960's, the southern part of Ivy was demolished for the extended highway. Iowa 163 curves south of Ivy, instead of going through it, which the older Iowa 163 did.
