Occupy Buffalo was a collaboration that included a peaceful protest and demonstrations which began on October 1, 2011, in Buffalo, New York, in Niagara Square, the nexus of downtown Buffalo opposite the Buffalo City Hall. It is related to the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York City on September 17, and called for economic equity, accountability among politicians and ending lobbyist influence of politicians. Protesters camped overnight in Niagara Square as part of the demonstration. Until August 2012, Occupy Buffalo had continued to engage in organized meetings, events and actions, according to their official site (now archived). As of September 18, 2019 their Facebook page continues to be active in sharing photos, events, and information.

The McKinley Monument is a 96-foot (29 m) tall obelisk in Niagara Square, Buffalo, New York. Its location in front of Buffalo City Hall defines the center of Buffalo that all of the main roads converge on.The monument was commissioned by the State of New York and dedicated September 6, 1907 to the memory of William McKinley, 25th President of the United States, who was fatally shot while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on September 6, 1901. Daniel H. Burnham influenced the process of designing the monument by advising that a obelisk should be built in order to call to the importance and significance of the monument. A full restoration had occurred in 2017 as the result of environmental conditions compromising the integrity of the monument.

Niagara Square is a public square located at the intersections of Delaware Avenue, Court Street, Genesee Street, and Niagara Street in Buffalo, New York. It is the central hub of Joseph Ellicott's original radial street pattern that he designed in 1804 for the then village of New Amsterdam. It continues to be the nexus of downtown Buffalo.

Millard Fillmore is a monumental statue in Buffalo, New York, United States. The statue, located outside of Buffalo City Hall, was designed by sculptor Bryant Baker and honors Millard Fillmore, a former president of the United States who lived in Buffalo. It was dedicated on July 1, 1932, in conjunction with a nearby statue of Grover Cleveland, another former president from Buffalo, which was also designed by Baker. Since 2020, there have been calls from some local activists, including a professor at the University at Buffalo, to remove the statue due to Fillmore's signing of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and his overall poor reputation regarding civil rights for African Americans.

Buffalo City Hall is the seat for municipal government in the City of Buffalo, New York. Located at 65 Niagara Square, the 32-story Art Deco building was completed in 1931 by Dietel, Wade & Jones. The 398-foot-tall (121.3 m) building is one of the largest and tallest municipal buildings in the United States and is also one of the tallest buildings in Western New York. It was designed by chief architect John Wade with the assistance of George Dietel. The friezes were sculpted by Albert Stewart and the sculpture executed by Rene Paul Chambellan. The foyer features a bronze tablet honoring Mayor Roesch, created in 1937 by regional sculptor, William Ehrich.Buffalo City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Buffalo Public Schools serves approximately 34,000 students in Buffalo, New York, the second largest city in the state of New York. It is located in Erie County of western New York and operates nearly 70 facilities.

The Buffalo City Court Building, named Frank A. Sedita City Court, for Buffalo mayor Frank A. Sedita, is a 10-story court house built in 1974 for the city of Buffalo, New York. It is in Niagara Square and adjacent to Buffalo City Hall.

The United States District Court for the Western District of New York (in case citations, W.D.N.Y.) is the federal district court whose jurisdiction comprises the western parts of Upstate New York. Appeals are taken to the Second Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit).

The Robert H. Jackson United States Courthouse is a U.S. Federal courthouse located in Buffalo, New York. The building occupies a full block of Delaware Avenue at Niagara Square, directly across from the Statler Towers and adjacent to Buffalo City Hall. The building features secure indoor parking for 54 vehicles, a glass entry pavilion that has all 4,536 words of the United States Constitution etched into the glass, and is topped off by a glass enclosure meant to resemble a glowing lantern when illuminated.

The City of Buffalo Police and Fire Headquarters at the Michael J. Dillon U.S. Courthouse Building is the headquarters for the Buffalo Fire Department and Buffalo Police Department and serves as a public safety building. The building had previously served as a courthouse of the United States District Court for the Western District of New York for nearly 80 years. Built in 1936, the building was renamed Michael J. Dillon Memorial U.S. Courthouse in 1986 in honor of murdered IRS Revenue Officer Michael J. Dillon. It is located at 68 Court Street.

The Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo, New York is a pre-trial, maximum security detention facility that serves Erie County. Capable of housing 680 inmates, it is the second largest detention facility in New York State outside of New York City. Inmate "Over-flow" is housed at the Holding Center Annex at the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden, New York. The Jail Management Division of the Erie County Sheriff's Office conducts regularly scheduled tours of the facility for high school and college student groups, police academy classes and groups of "At risk" teens. The ECHC is staffed by approximately 500 Deputies whom are sworn police officers. There are currently two operational k9 narcotics detection teams among them. The ECHC houses many high profile criminals and frequent has to deploy QET (quick entry team) to quell inmate disturbances and emergency situations.

Buffalo City Tower was an approved 40-story, mixed-use, tower aiming to be the tallest in downtown Buffalo. It was to be developed by British property development company BSC Group, headed up by entrepreneur Bashar Issa. Details included: retail focused on the corner of S. Elmwood and Mohawk Street, 20 floors of office space at 24,400 GSF/floor, 10 floors of hotel totaling 300 rooms each at 380–500 square feet (35–46 m2), and 10 floors of 80 condos each at 965–1,500 square feet (89.7–139.4 m2). Parking was to be accommodated in three underground and six above ground levels with a total of between 800 and 1150 spaces depending if stacking is used. The project was canceled in 2008 due to Issa's financial troubles in Manchester and Buffalo. Issa eventually sold the downtown Buffalo parcel, located at the corner of West Mohawk Street and South Elmwood Avenue, to local developer Mark Croce who currently operates it as a surface parking lot. Issa, who floated plans for a 40-story, $361 million mixed-use complex, bought the lot for $1 million in June 2006. Issa also purchased the Statler Hotel, located across the street, and aimed to invest $100 million in renovating that building to return it to its former glory. The building was placed into involuntary bankruptcy in 2009 and sold at auction to private investors, including Mark Croce.
