South Market Street Historic District

Thomas Wallace House is a historic home located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was built about 1855, and is a two-story, three-bay, pressed brick dwelling in the Italianate style. It sits on a raised basement and has a low hipped roof with bracketed cornice. It has a one-story rear service wing and a front porch supported by six fluted Greek Doric order columns. On April 3, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant met in its library to discuss the inevitable end to the American Civil War and the surrender.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Peabody Building of the Peabody-Williams School is an American historic school building located in Petersburg, Virginia. The structure opened in 1920 as a public high school for African American students in Petersburg's segregated public school system. The building was designed by noted Virginia architect Charles M. Robinson. It is a two-story, red brick building that was originally part of a campus that included a junior high school and an elementary school.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, but is now closed. A new middle school was built adjacent to it, and remains in use.

Gillfield Baptist Church is the second-oldest black Baptist congregation in Petersburg, Virginia and one of the oldest in the nation. It has the oldest handwritten record book of any black church. It was organized in 1797 as a separate, integrated congregation. In 1818 it built its first church at its current lot on Perry Street. In 1957 its ninth pastor the Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker (1953–1959), co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, led the congregation in the Civil Rights Movement in Petersburg. It continues to serve the community today.

Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Commercial and Industrial Historic District is a national historic district located at Petersburg, Virginia. The district includes 15 contributing buildings, 1 contributing structure, and 1 contributing object located in a predominantly industrial and commercial section of Petersburg. The section housed some of Petersburg's important industries – tobacco and wholesale grocery and confectioner. Notable buildings include the Cameron Building (c. 1879), Export Leaf Tobacco Company (1913), H.P. Harrison Company (1912), Brown & Williamson complex, and Gibson Drive-in.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

First Baptist Church (est. 1774) was the first Baptist church in Petersburg, Virginia; one of the first African-American Baptist congregations in the United States, and one of the oldest black churches in the nation. It established one of the first local schools for black children in the nation. Its congregation was active during the 20th century Civil Rights Movement. Today it has the largest community outreach program in the city.

The Saint Paul's Church also known as Saint Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, is a historic Episcopal church in Petersburg, Virginia, United States. It was designed by Niernsee & Neilson and built between 1855 and 1857, in the Gothic Revival style. The church is constructed of brick and features a three-story entrance tower. Also on the property are a contributing rectory (c. 1860) and parish house (1922). The church was attended by Robert E. Lee during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864–65.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is located in the Petersburg Courthouse Historic District.

Folly Castle Historic District, also known as the West Washington Street Historic District, is a national historic district located at Petersburg, Virginia. The district includes 189 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object located in a predominantly residential section of Petersburg. It includes a varied collection of late 18th-and 19th-century houses and includes notable examples of Late Victorian, Georgian, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Federal style architecture. Notable buildings include Folly Castle / Peter Jones V residence (1763, 1865-1885), McIlwaine-Friend residence (1856-1858), Rambout-Donnan residence (c. 1780-1790), former Petersburg High School (1917-1918), Donnan House (c. 1810), First Baptist Church (1928), Couch House (1850s), and St. John's Episcopal Church (1897). Located in the district and separately listed are the Second Presbyterian Church and Strawberry Hill.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, with boundary increases in 1992 and 2000.

Strawberry Hill is a historic home located in Petersburg, Virginia, built by tobacco warehouse owner, William Barksdale, in 1792. Strawberry Hill, designed with a tripartite Palladian form, is an early example of a Virginia dwelling built in the neoclassical style and includes several notable architectural features. It is now an inn and event venue. Strawberry Hill is listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register, and is located in the Folly Castle Historic District.

The district includes 75 contributing buildings located in the central business district of Petersburg. It is centered on the Petersburg Courthouse and includes notable examples of Greek Revival, Italianate, Federal style architecture. Notable buildings include the Paul-Lassiter House, Slaughter-Tatum House, Tabb Street Presbyterian Church Rectory, Mark E. Holt Jewelry Store, Augustus Wright Block, Virginia National Bank, Saal's Department Store, Remmie Arnold Pens Company building, A&P Super Market, Watson Court Apartments, and the Zimmer & Company Building. Located in the district and separately listed are the Petersburg City Hall, Tabb Street Presbyterian Church, and Saint Paul's Church.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Washington Street Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was built in 1842, and is a one-story with gallery, brick building in the Greek Revival style. It features a massive Greek Doric order pedimented tetrastyle portico added in 1890. Wings were added in 1922–1923, connected to the main building by columned hyphens.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Anna P. Bolling Junior High School is an American educational institution in Petersburg, Virginia, built in 1926 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The school building was designed by architect Charles M. Robinson and is considered to be an "impressive example" of Second Renaissance Revival architecture.The school was named for Anna Peyton Bolling, who started as a high school teacher in Petersburg when the city's public schools were established and served as the high school principal from 1876 to 1907. The school that was named for her was used as a school until 1974, after which time it housed city offices, then became vacant. As of 1998 it was being converted to become moderate-income apartments.

Second Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church located at 419 W. Washington St., Petersburg, Virginia. It was designed by architect and church pastor Theodorick Pryor and was built in 1861–1862, in the Gothic Revival style. It has stucco covered brick walls and a tower that protrudes from the central bay of its three-bay entry facade. The interior features iron ornamentation, cast by a foundry in Petersburg at the beginning of the American Civil War. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Folly Castle Historic District.
