Menden (German pronunciation: [ˈmɛndn̩] , official name: Menden (Sauerland); Westphalian: Mennen) is a city in the district Märkischer Kreis, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located at the north end of the Sauerland near the Ruhr river.

Oese (in its upper course: Gelmecke and Sundwiger Bach) is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a left tributary of the Hönne, which it joins in Menden.

The Hönne is a left tributary river to the Ruhr, flowing through the northern Sauerland hills in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The spring of the Hönne is located in the west of Neuenrade at 437m above sea level. After 33 km the river ends near the town of Fröndenberg. The total catchment area of the river is 262 km².Most notable is the narrow valley between Balve and Menden, where the Hönne has carved 60m deep into Devonian limestone. Several caves are located in the valley, of which the Balver Höhle and the Reckenhöhle are accessible for visitors. When the water level in the river is low, some parts of the valley fall dry as the water flows subterraneously through the Karst rocks. Several of the tributary brooks in that valley also flow subterraneously for some parts of their course.

Fröndenberg station is a junction station on the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway and the Letmathe–Fröndenberg railway. It is in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia between the Ruhr river to the south and the city of Fröndenberg to the northeast. The station building has been closed and converted into a hotel for cyclists and a bicycle parking facility. Since 2009, Deutsche Post has erected a Packstation here. The ticket office has been replaced by a ticket machine. Previously there was a freight yard, part of which is now used for supermarket parking and the rest for station parking.

The Oberrödinghauser Hammer is an industrial cultural monument in the village of Oberrödinghausen in the borough of Menden in the Sauerland region of Germany. The hammer mill is on the B 515 federal road opposite the potash processing plant of Rheinkalk.The Alte Hammer ("Old Hammer Mill") was recorded as early as 1751. It was founded by Max Theodor von Dücker and was part of the Rödinghausen Ironworks (Rödinghauser Eisenfabrik). Its primary products were fire grates and ploughshares. Until it finally closed in 1955 it had been used by the Rhenish-Westphalian Potash Works (Rheinisch-Westfälische Kalkwerke) as a forge. Formerly two water wheels drove a 70-kilogramme tilt hammer and a 300-kilogramme stave hammer (Stabhammer). The necessary water came from the Oberrödinghausen spring of Hüttenspring and was impounded in a hammer pond.
