The Wreck of the Old 97 was an American rail disaster involving the Southern Railway mail train, officially known as the Fast Mail (train number 97), while en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, on September 27, 1903. Travelling at an excessive speed in an attempt to maintain schedule, the train derailed at the Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, where it careened off the side of the bridge, killing 11 on-board personnel and injuring seven others. The wreck inspired a famous railroad ballad, which was the focus of a copyright lawsuit and became seminal in the genre of country music.

The Downtown Danville Historic District is a national historic district located at Danville, Virginia. The district includes 48 contributing buildings in the central business district of Danville. It includes a wide range of commercial, industrial, and institutional building types dating from the 1870s to the present. The district includes notable examples of the Late Gothic Revival, Tudor Revival, and Romanesque Revival styles. Notable buildings include the Danville City Auditorium (1932), Morotock Manufacturing Company (1907), J. T. Stovall Tobacco Factory (1876), Kingoff Building (1892), American National Bank & Trust Co (c. 1934), Woolworth's Building (1937), Southern Amusement Building (1922), Elks Home (1912), Danville Post Office (1932), Masonic Building (1921-1922), and Danville City Market (1930s). Located in the district are the separately listed Hotel Danville and the Danville Municipal Building.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Bloody Monday is a name used to describe a series of arrests and attacks that took place during a civil rights protest held on June 10, 1963, in Danville, Virginia. It was held to protest segregation laws and racial inequality and was one of several protests held during the month of June. It attracted veteran protesters from out of town, such as Ivanhoe Donaldson, Avon Rollins, Robert Zellner and Dorthy Miller (Zellner) of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The events received widespread criticism from national media, especially for the subsequent trials overseen by Judge Archibald M. Aiken.During the day thirty-eight protesters were arrested and jailed for their participation in the protests. In response fifty protesters gathered at the city jail to hold a prayer vigil that evening. Participants at the vigil were attacked by the town's police and deputized citizens using billy clubs and water hoses. Sixty-five people were taken to the town's African-American hospital as a result of the events of that day. Forty-seven of the victims were people attending the prayer vigil. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Danville to support the demonstrators on July 11, 1963, but chose not to hold a march.Judge Aiken began trying the arrested protesters on June 17. His handling of the cases of those arrested has received criticism from several people and organizations such as the United States Department of Justice. During the trials Aiken refused to give out bills of particulars or grant continuances or bail. He also announced guilty verdicts from a pre-typed script and made it nearly, if not completely, impossible for the defendants to appeal their sentences.

Hotel Danville, also known as the Municipal Building and City Market, is a historic hotel building located at Danville, Virginia. The main section was built in 1927–1928, and consists of a ten-story, brick main section with two smaller axes to form a "V"-shape. The building is in the Neo-Adamesque style. The building once included the Capitol Theater, and incorporated a three-story rectangular hipped roof wing, or annex, that was the former Municipal Building and City Market complex. The building provides senior housing, known as Danville House. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is located in the Downtown Danville Historic District.

Danville Municipal Building is a historic city hall building located at Danville, Virginia, USA. It was built in 1926 and is a three-story, brick and concrete building faced in limestone in the Classical Revival style. Its front facade has a colonnade with Ionic order columns.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. It is located in the Downtown Danville Historic District and Danville Tobacco Warehouse and Residential District.

The Mechanicsville Historic District encompasses a small and cohesive working-class neighborhood west of downtown Danville, Virginia. The district is bounded by Upper Street on the northwest; North Floyd Street on the northeast; High Street on the southeast; and North Ridge Street on the southwest. This area was developed beginning roughly in 1880 as a residential district catering to workers in the nearby tobacco-processing facilities. The houses in the district are in a blend of styles, but are characterized by similar lot sizes and setbacks. The district includes two churches, and a building that originally served as a tobacco prizery (a building where tobacco leaves are packed into barrels). The neighborhood was a center of civil rights activism during the 1960s, playing host to Martin Luther King Jr. It was once somewhat larger; areas to the west and north were razed during urban redevelopment efforts.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Galileo Magnet High School, opened in September 2002, is a public high school located in Danville, Virginia. The school was originally funded by an 8 million dollar grant to the Danville Public School System. By working directly with organizations such as the Langley Research Center and Virginia Tech, Galileo offers a technology-based curriculum, with three strands of study for students to choose from. A thematic-based curriculum is provided in Advanced Communications and Networking Technology, Air and Space Technology, and Biotechnology. U.S. News & World Report ranked the school the 45th best in the state in 2020.Galileo is an International Baccalaureate world school.

Main Street Methodist Church, also known as the Main Street United Methodist Church, is a historic Methodist church located at Danville, Virginia. It was built between 1865 and 1873, and is a scored stucco over brick, Romanesque Revival style porch. It features an elaborate 87 feet (27 m) tall, corner bell tower that dates from an 1890-1891 church enlargement and remodeling. A complementary flanking educational building was added in 1923. It is known locally as the "Mother Church of Methodism in Danville."The former Main Street United Methodist Church is the only Danville house of worship included on the National Register of Historic Places. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.Donated by the Methodists to the nonprofit Danville Preservation League in 2008, its upkeep became too large a burden for the nonprofit. This structure has been in the private hands of William & Tania Hardin since 2016 who have taken on the responsibility of caring for the oldest standing church building in Danville. It held the offices and archives of Danville's Historic Society prior to their relocation in April 2019. It is now available to rent for events.

North Danville Historic District is a national historic district located in Danville, Virginia. The district includes 426 contributing buildings in a primarily residential area of Danville. The district includes three blocks of primarily two-story, brick commercial buildings. Buildings within the district were constructed from around 1880 until roughly 1955 and reflect a wide variety of architectural styles, including vernacular Victorian, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and bungalow designs. Many of these buildings were built by Dan River Cotton Mills founder T.B. Fitzgerald. Notable buildings include the Calvary United Methodist Church (1886), Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church (1889), Bellevue Public School (1898), Washington Street Methodist Episcopal Church (1910), Keen Street Baptist Church (1927), and Woodrow Wilson High School (1926).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Danville Science Center is a science museum affiliated with the Science Museum of Virginia located in the tobacco warehouse district of Danville, Virginia.The museum features rotating exhibits on the lower level and permanent exhibits on the upper level including a Science On a Sphere installation. Other science themes include biology, gravity, friction, force, light and magnetism. The Estelle H. Womack Natural History Collection of taxidermied animal mounts and exhibits on the area's rail history, including the Wreck of the Old 97, are also housed in the adjacent Danville station. There is a seasonal butterfly station.

The Danville Tobacco Warehouse and Residential District is a national historic district located at Danville, Virginia. The district includes 532 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, and 2 contributing structures in the city of Danville. The district reflects the late-19th century and early-20th development of Danville as a tobacco processing center and includes residential, commercial, and industrial buildings reflecting that growth. It also includes archaeological sites related to early Native American settlements in the area. Notable buildings include the American Tobacco's Harris Building, the Imperial Tobacco Company Building, Cabell Warehouse, Patton Storage Units (c. 1940), Crowell Motor Company, Municipal Power Station (1912), Riverside Cotton Mill #1 (1886), and a variety of "shotgun" houses and bungalow workers housing. Located in the district are the separately listed Danville Municipal Building and Danville Southern Railway Passenger Depot.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, with a boundary increase in 2009.

Danville station, also known as Danville Southern Railway Passenger Depot, is a historic train station in Danville, Virginia. It is currently served by Amtrak, the United States' national passenger rail service, and is a stop on the Crescent line.
