Hartwood Manor

Hartwood Presbyterian Church, also known as the Yellow Chapel Church, is a historic Presbyterian church located at the junction of VA 705 and 612 in Hartwood, Stafford County, Virginia. It was built between 1857 and 1859, and is a rectangular brick Greek Revival style church. The church was restored in 1866, after having been used by both sides during the American Civil War. During the war, it was the site of Wade Hampton's November 1862 capture of 137 men of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry. The property includes the site of the Hartwood Chapel or Yellow Chapel of about 1767 and a graveyard. Hartwood Presbyterian Church was the only Presbyterian church in Stafford County from about 1807 until 1983.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Rapidan River, flowing 88 miles (142 km) through north-central Virginia in the United States, is the largest tributary of the Rappahannock River. The two rivers converge just west of the city of Fredericksburg. The Rapidan River begins west of Doubletop Mountain in Shenandoah National Park where the Mill Prong meets the Laurel Prong at Rapidan Camp, approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Big Meadows. The river defines the border of Orange County with Culpeper and Madison Counties. Sections of the lower Rapidan River are preserved by a conservation easement.The Rapidan River was the scene of severe fighting in the American Civil War, and historic sites such as Ely's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Kelly's Ford, and the Battle of the Wilderness are nearby. The name is a combination of the word "rapids" with the name of Queen Anne of England. Originally, it was known as the Rapid Ann River. The Rapidan River ranks #38 in Trout Unlimited's Guide to America's 100 Best Trout Streams. In 2000, the upper Rapidan River was nominated for EPA designation as a Tier III Exceptional Waterway. In 2001, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality rejected the application, citing uncertainty about the impact of the designation.

The Rapidan Dam Canal of the Rappahannock Navigation is a canal intended to safely carry Batteaus, sturdy flat-bottomed boats used primarily for transporting cargo, around the rapids at the confluence of the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers. The Rapidan Canal, funded and constructed by The Rappahannock Company, consists of two different canals (the Old Rapidan Canal and the Rapidan Canal) built at different times. All of the Rappahannock Navigation, of which the Rapidan Canal is a part, is located in the Piedmont region of Virginia. The Confluence, the name used on maps of the day and sometimes maps of today to denote where the two rivers meet, is located where the borders of the Virginia Counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford and Culpeper meet but is owned by the City of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Rapidan Canal was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) on June 19, 1973, and on the National Register of Historic Places on July 26, 1973.

Hartwood Airport is a former airport located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, United States. It was opened in 1969, and closed in 2010.During the time it was active, it's FAA and ICAO airport codes were 8W8.Hartwood Airport straddles a county border with its street address in Stafford County, Virginia and its hangar, office, and most of its runway in Fauquier County, Virginia. It was popular for private pilot training and its parachute drop zone.It is now a "test lane" facility operated by Unisys Corp. and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency. It is home to a simulated international border crossing where technology akin to an E-ZPass is being evaluated for use at border crossings.

Accokeek was a 17th-century plantation on Accokeek Creek in Stafford County, Virginia, United States. Built with the forced labor of enslaved people , Accokeek was the first seat of the prominent Mason political family in Virginia. In 1653, the tract of land that would become Accokeek was granted to John Withers, who then sold it to Colonel Valentine Peyton (1627-1665). In 1662, Peyton sold the tract, along with 500 contiguous acres (2.0 km2) granted to Peyton, to Captain George Mason I. George Mason I (5 June 1629–1686), the progenitor of the prominent American landholding and political Mason family, made his permanent residence along Accokeek Creek on a hill between present-day State Routes 608 (Brooke Road) and 621 (Marlborough Point Road) in Stafford County, Virginia. He christened his plantation "Accokeek," which was later renamed "Rose Hill." Mason's Accokeek plantation began with about 650 acres (2.6 km2) and eventually increased in size to 1,150 acres (4.7 km2).George Mason I's son George Mason II was born in 1660 at Accokeek. George Mason II sold Accokeek after his father's death and moved to Chopawamsic plantation on Chopawamsic Creek.

The Mud March was an abortive offensive in January 1863 by Union Army Major General Ambrose Burnside in the American Civil War. Burnside had been repulsed by Robert E. Lee's troops in the Army of the Potomac's first attempt to cross the Rappahannock River in an attempt to take the Confederate capitol of Richmond, VA. The Mud March was Burnside's second attempt at crossing the Rappahannock. The strategy was sound in theory, but it failed because of dissension among generals in the Army of the Potomac, compounded by severe winter storms.
