Thoroughfare Gap Battlefield

The Battle of Thoroughfare Gap, also known as Chapman's Mill, took place on August 28, 1862, in Fauquier County and Prince William County, Virginia, as part of the Northern Virginia Campaign of the American Civil War. Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. James Longstreet successfully drove back Union forces under Brig. Gen. James B. Ricketts and Col. Percy Wyndham, allowing his corps to unite with that of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson prior to the Second Battle of Bull Run (Second Manassas).

Beverley Mill, also known as Chapman Mill, is a historic grist mill located north of Interstate 66 and Virginia State Route 55 in Thoroughfare Gap near Broad Run, Virginia, straddling the county line between Prince William and Fauquier Counties. It was built about 1759, and is a five-story, four bay by three bay, rubble stone structure. The water power was provided by Broad Run which, in its 1,300-foot (400-metre) passage through the Gap, drops 87 feet (27 metres). Exterior mill machinery included a 29-foot (8.8-metre) metal waterwheel and sluice gate as well as a stone mill race. The mill continued in operation through World War II. It is included in the Thoroughfare Gap Battlefield. The mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. On October 22, 1998, a fire resulting from vandalism gutted the mill, which is awaiting restoration.

Thoroughfare Gap is a water gap in the Bull Run Mountains created by Broad Run between High Point Mountain to the north and Bisquit Mountain to the south. It is located on the border of Prince William and Fauquier counties in Virginia. True to its name, the small gap is traversed by Interstate 66, Virginia State Route 55 and the Manassas Gap Railroad. The ruins of historic Beverley Mill are located at the gap. The gap was the site of the 1862 Battle of Thoroughfare Gap during the American Civil War. The Thoroughfare Gap Battlefield was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Broad Run is a small, unincorporated community in Fauquier County, Virginia. It is on Bust Head Road just north of Interstate 66 and State Route 55, near the Prince William County line. Broad Run is named after the waterway that flows through the town. Broad Run has its own ZIP Code of 20137, and its post office serves a population of 1,510. The town of Broad Run was a thriving community in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The decline of the railroads spelled the demise of the town, and all that is left of the town proper is less than five homes from that period, and a few stone foundations and chimneys for buildings that no longer exist. A ramp for loading freight trains still exists on the still active Norfolk Southern freight line, but is covered with weeds and in such disrepair as to be no longer useful. The most notable historical site in Broad Run is Chapman's Mill, a.k.a. Beverley's Mill, which can be found two-thirds of a mile ESE from the center of the town of Broad Run. The Battle of Thoroughfare Gap, a seemingly inconsequential but eventually very important battle of the American Civil War, was fought at Chapman's Mill. The Thoroughfare Gap Battlefield and Galemont are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The Broad Run postal area is an almost exclusively residential area which is mostly in Fauquier County, Virginia, with the northeast section in Prince William County. The few businesses that can be found in the Broad Run postal area are generally home businesses or agricultural businesses. Notably, Sharkawi Farms grows a wide variety of spices that are sold locally and Meriwether Vineyard is home to Pearmund Cellars Winery. The Broad Run postal area, at its southern edge, also contains what was historically the town of New Baltimore. Much of what is currently considered the modern-day New Baltimore is not in the Broad Run postal area. Several old building foundations and graveyards may be found in the large wooded areas in the Broad Run postal area, some dating back over 200 years.

Heflin's Store, also known as Stover's Store and Brawner's Store, is a historic general store located near Little Georgetown, Fauquier County, Virginia. It was built in 1845, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three bay, stuccoed rubble stone structure. It has a front gable roof. The building housed a general store from the time of its construction into the 1970s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Phoebe Hall Knipling Outdoor Laboratory (usually called "the Arlington Outdoor Lab" or simply "Outdoor Lab") is a 225-acre (0.91 km2) outdoor facility located in Fauquier County, Virginia. It is owned and operated by Arlington Outdoor Education Association, Inc. with funding from Arlington Public Schools with the aim of teaching urban students in Arlington County, Virginia science, outdoor skills, arts, and humanities in a natural setting. Its mascot is a spotted salamander.

Galemont is a historic home located at Broad Run, Fauquier County, Virginia. It was built between 1778 and 1817, as a 1+1⁄2-story, two-room, stone hall-and-parlor-plan residence with a one-room cellar. It was expanded about 1857, and included Federal / Greek Revival-style details. In 1872, a new I-plan house was built less than 20 feet east of the original house, and connected to make one large, multi-period building with transverse center halls. It was further enlarged in 1903, with a connection to the stone kitchen and two-story wing. The later additions added a Folk Victorian style to the house. Also on the property are the contributing garage, silo, old shed, pond, a fieldstone wall (c. 1824), and two archaeological sites: the 1852 Broad Run Train Depot site and an intact segment of the Thoroughfare Gap Road.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

The Broad Run–Little Georgetown Rural Historic District encompasses a large rural landscape in northeastern Fauquier County, Virginia, and a small portion of neighboring Prince William County, Virginia. The district covers about 9,500 acres (3,800 ha) of rolling hills, that has an agricultural history dating to the 18th century. It is roughly divided by the John Marshall Highway (Virginia State Route 55), and is bounded on the west by The Plains, the east by the Bull Run Mountains, and the south by Pignut Mountain.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. It includes two individually listed properties: Heflin's Store, and the Beverley Mill.

Mount Hope is a historic home located near New Baltimore, Fauquier County, Virginia. The house was built in four periods from the early-19th to early-20th centuries. The main dwelling is a 2 ½-story, three-bay, frame dwelling on a stone foundation and in the Greek Revival style. It features a double-story porch with a hipped roof and square wooden columns. Also on the property are the contributing bank barn, a machine shed, a smokehouse, and a spring house dating from the 19th century; an early-20th-century shed; a well; and the Hunton Family cemetery.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Thoroughfare is an unincorporated community in western Prince William County, Virginia. Roughly located on Virginia State Route 55 about 1.5 miles West of Haymarket where the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks cross the road. The community thrived through the 1940s as a community founded by former slaves. As a place name, Thoroughfare is no longer in common use.
