Balgowan is a valley in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands in South Africa. The town of Balgowan is not much more than an old trading store and a train station where locally grown timber is picked up. However, nearby is Michaelhouse, the Anglican boarding school for boys in the Diocese of Natal, an exclusive private boarding school. The school complex, built in the English gothic style from red Pietermaritzburg brick, includes a chapel which is open to the public, featuring a stained glass rose window by Ervin Bossanyi and seven lancet windows by Margaret Agnes Rope. Its name originates from the last lion which was shot in the area in 1856.Lions River is a rural town on the Midlands Meander route, situated within the Dargle Valley. The Lions River Conservation District covers some 2,000 square kilometres (770 sq mi). The area is well known for farming, particularly dairy. Within the town itself, the Lions River Trading Post is the most popular attraction.

Midmar Dam is a combined gravity & earth-fill type dam and recreation area located near Howick and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Boating, swimming, waterskiing, picnicking, and fishing are popular pastimes at Midmar Dam. Each year, the Midmar Mile swimming race is held there, which organizers call "the world's largest open water swimming event". Over 20,000 entries were received for the 2009 event. Midmar Dam is located in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. The dam's primary purpose is to serve for municipal and industrial use and its hazard potential has been ranked high (3). Morgenzon has camping and caravanning sites, both powered and non-powered. The dam also hosts a yacht club, and lock up storage facilities for boats. Midmar Dam is easily accessible from the N3 motorway.

Midmar Nature Reserve, also known as Midmar Dam Nature Reserve, is a protected area around Midmar Dam on the Umgeni River. It is situated near to Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Howick is a town located in the UMngeni Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. The town is 1050 m above sea level, and about 88 kilometres from the port city of Durban. It enjoys warm summers and cool dry winters. A snappy chill descends upon Howick when snow falls on the nearby Drakensberg. The town is located on the N3 freeway, connecting it with the rest of South Africa. The town is the location of Howick Falls, which is a large waterfall that occurs when the Umgeni River falls 95 metres (311 feet) over dolerite cliffs on its way to the Indian Ocean. The waterfall was known as kwaNogqaza or "The Place of the Tall One" by the original Zulu inhabitants. There are several other waterfalls in the vicinity and all of them have claimed human lives. Near Howick are Cascade Falls (25 m) and Shelter Falls (37 m), while Karkloof Falls (105 m) is 16 km to the east. There are also a number of schools in Howick, including Howick High School.

uMngeni Municipality (Zulu: UMasipala wase Mngeni) is a local municipality within the Umgungundlovu District Municipality, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The municipality is named after the uMngeni River that runs through the municipal area.
