Sandwich (Urbanna, Virginia)

Urbanna is a town in Middlesex County, Virginia, United States. Urbanna means “City of Anne” and was named in honor of England's Queen Anne. The population was 476 at the 2010 census.

James Mills Storehouse, also known as the Old Tobacco Warehouse, is a historic store located at Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. It was built between 1763 and 1767, and is a 1 1/2-story, rectangular brick structure on a raised brick basement. It has a gable roof and full width front porch. It is a rare if not unique survivor of the type of storehouse which, being run by a resident factor of a British company, was not only connected with the sale of tobacco but which housed imported goods to be bought on credit by the planters.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Urbanna Historic District is a national historic district in Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. It has 65 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Urbanna. Buildings include the Old Tavern, Gressitt House (c. 1820), Genders House (1876), Fitchett (1884), Van Wagenen House (c. 1900), C. H. Palmer Garage (c. 1930), Sentinel Building, Urbanna Town Office, Taylor Hardware (1921-1925), Bank of Middlesex (1900-1901), Urbanna Baptist Church (1896), Located in the district and separately listed are the Old Courthouse, Lansdowne, James Mills Storehouse, Sandwich, and Wormeley Cottage.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The Middlesex County Courthouse in Urbanna, Virginia was built starting in 1745. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1976. It has also been known as Old Middlesex County Courthouse and as Middlesex County Woman's Club.During the American Civil War, the building was used by Confederate troops and was shelled by Union gunboats, but was not much damaged. It has been used as a church. In 1948 it was deconsecrated and ownership was transferred to the Middlesex County Woman's Club. As of 1976 the building was used by that group as its headquarters and for community and private functions. It is located in the Urbanna Historic District.

Lansdowne is a historic home located at Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. It was constructed about 1740, and is a two-story, five-bay, T-shaped, brick dwelling in the Early Georgian style. It consists of a main section measuring 52 feet by 25 feet, with a rear wing of 36 feet by 18 feet. The front facade features a tall pedimented portico projecting from the center bay. It was the home of diplomat Arthur Lee (1791-1792), who is buried on the property in the family cemetery. Lee helped to negotiate and signed the 1778 Treaty of Alliance, which allied France and the United States together during the American Revolutionary War. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is located in the Urbanna Historic District.

Urbanna Creek is a 3.52 mi (5.66 km) long 3rd order tributary to the Rappahannock River in Middlesex County, Virginia. The stream is tidal is for its entire distance.

Wormeley Cottage, also known as the Wormeley-Montague House, is a historic home located at Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. One of the few remaining 18th century buildings, it was built on orders of Ralph Wormeley about 1750, when the port town was established. He sold several town lots, including the cottage, in 1770 to James Mills. The 1+1⁄2-story dwelling features three-bays and a frame side passage plan. The narrow gable roof includes dormers and features an asymmetrical chimney. The recent renovation by Robert Montague III also installed a solar heating unit, one of the first to be installed on a historic property in Virginia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is located in the Urbanna Historic District.

Rosegill is a historic plantation house and farm complex located near Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973.

Hewick is a historic home located near Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. It was constructed in 1678 by Christopher Robinson, whose progeny held considerable power in the colony before the American Revolution, during which some members became loyalists. It was listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1978.Now a two-story, five-bay, L-shaped brick dwelling, it originally had 1+1⁄2 stories, but raised to a full two stories in the mid-19th century. The rear ell is popularly believed to have been built in the late 17th century.It is currently operated as a wedding venue.

Christ Church is a historic Episcopal church located at Saluda, Middlesex County, Virginia. The present building was constructed in the 1720s, and is a one-story, rectangular brick building with a gable roof. It measures 60 feet by 33 feet, 6 inches. Although relatively plain, the church's interior was richly furnished in colonial times. After the Anglican church was disestablished in Virginia following the American Revolution, the church building was abandoned, and it fell into ruin. During this period, all interior furnishings, the roof, and the upper part of the walls were lost. The flemish bond walls of the church, however, remained standing.The parish was revived in 1840, and the church was restored in 1843. A gable-roofed vestibule added, which today bears an inscription bearing the date 1714 (previously thought to be the date of construction and 1843).Burials in the churchyard include Congressman Andrew Jackson Montague and Chesty Puller. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Middlesex County Courthouse in Saluda, Virginia was built in 1852. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1978. The courthouse building "is a late but significant example of the arcaded-plan courthouse which had its precedent in Virginia's colonial courthouses and earliest civic buildings."The NRHP listing included three contributing buildings: the courthouse, a clerk's office, and a jail. And it included one other contributing structure, which is a Confederate Civil War monument.John P.
