Monterey Hotel

Monterey is a town in Highland County, Virginia, United States. The population was 147 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Highland County.

C.P. Jones House and Law Office, also known as the Jones-McCoy House, Almond-Strickler House, and James Bell House, is a historic home and law office located at Monterey, Highland County, Virginia. The original section of the house dates to about 1850. Originally the house was a two-story, five-bay, side-gabled, four-room log building on a stone foundation. Several rooms and porches were added between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and has a Folk Victorian style. The law office was built about 1873, and is a one-story, front-gable, frame building. Also on the property are the contributing two-story, side-gabled garage/smoke house/woodshed, a one-story, front-gabled apple shed/cellar, a one-story brick spring house ruin. It was the home of American soldier and politician Charles Pinckney Jones (1845-1914).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Monterey High School, also known as Highland High School, Monterey Elementary School, Highland Elementary School, and Highland Center, is a historic school building located at Monterey, Highland County, Virginia. It was built in 1922, and is a one-story, hipped roof garnet sandstone structure in the Classical Revival-style. The three-bay facade consists of two side classroom wings with the central entry portico. It has a multiple hipped roof, symmetrical facade, and portico supported by Doric order columns. The school closed in 1997, and subsequently housed the Highland Center.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Trimble Knob, located southwest of Monterey in Highland County, Virginia, is a conical hill composed of basalt, a volcanic rock, of Eocene (early Tertiary) age. It is the eroded remnant of what was an active volcano or diatreme that last erupted approximately 35 million years ago, making it one of the youngest volcanos on the east coast of North America.

Vanderpool (also Galltown, Gaul Town, or Woodsborough) is an unincorporated community in Highland County, Virginia, United States. Vanderpool is located 3.8 miles (6.1 km) south-southwest of Monterey, Virginia at the junction of Virginia State Route 84 and U.S. Route 220. The community is situated near Vanderpool Gap, through which the Jackson River flows. Before the creation of Highland County in 1847, Vanderpool was proposed to be the new county's seat, though it was defeated in favor of Monterey. Vanderpool was named after the Dutch explorer John Vanderpool, who was the first man to pass through the area on horseback and discovered the Vanderpool Gap.

Highland lays claim to being one of the least populous counties and one of the highest average elevations east of the Mississippi River.

Highland Wildlife Management Area is a 14,283-acre (22.3 sq mi; 57.8 km2) Wildlife Management Area in Highland County, Virginia. It consists of three separate tracts of land, centered on Jack Mountain, Bullpasture Mountain, and Little Doe Hill; elevations in the area range from 1,800 to 4,390 feet (550 to 1,340 m) above sea level.With the exception of an 80-acre (32 ha) clearing on Jack Mountain that was once used as summer pasture land, the area is nearly completely covered by upland hardwood forest, consisting mainly of oaks and hickories. The Bullpasture River flows through the area and is regularly stocked with trout. The area is carefully managed to enhance wildlife habitat, including maintaining small clearings as open space for wildlife, and encouraging the growth of mast-producing trees to provide food.Highland Wildlife Management Area is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The area is open to the public for hunting, trapping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and primitive camping. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, or a WMA access permit.

Meadowdale is an unincorporated community in Highland County, Virginia, United States. Meadowdale is located 5.2 miles (8.4 km) southwest of Monterey, Virginia on State Route 84.

Mustoe (also Pinckney) is an unincorporated community in Highland County, Virginia, United States. Mustoe is located 6.9 miles (11.1 km) south-southwest of Monterey, Virginia. The community is situated along U.S. Route 220 on the banks of the Jackson River. According to the National Weather Service, the only tornado on record in Highland County occurred near Mustoe in 1959.

Trimble is an unincorporated community in Highland County, Virginia, United States. Trimble is located 7.7 miles (12.4 km) south of Monterey, Virginia. The community is situated along the Dry Branch, a tributary of the Jackson River, near a gap in Little Mountain through which the Dry Branch flows.

Mill Gap (also Green Hill, Millgap, or Rucksmanville) is an unincorporated community and small rural village in Highland County, Virginia, United States. Mill Gap is located 9.1 miles (14.6 km) southwest of Monterey, Virginia on Virginia State Route 84. The community is located near a water gap of the same name that separates the ridges of Lantz Mountain and Little Mountain through which the East Back Creek flows. As of 2015, the community consists only of a general store and a church, with attached residences.
