Wheatley High School (Houston)

Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church is a Black Catholic church in Frenchtown, an area within the Fifth Ward of Houston. It was the second Black parish to be established in the city and the first established by Louisiana Creoles. It was also the first institution created by non-Anglophones in an African-American neighborhood in the city. It is a part of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and its membership has included both Creole and non-Creole African Americans.

Howard P. Carter Career Center was a high school in the Fifth Ward area of Houston, Texas. The school, serving grades 6 through 12, was a part of the Houston Independent School District. The school served as a vocational school and pregnant girls' school. Carter Career Center had many students who are single parents. It had a day-care center that is supported by corporations, the state, the federal government, and foundations. After the closure of Carter, the building housed the DeVry Advantage Academy.

{{DeVry Advantage Academy and CLC at H.P. Carter was a high school in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas, operated in conjunction with DeVry University. It was in the former Carter Career Center/Wheatley High School/E.O. Smith Education Center building. The school offered students the opportunity to receive a high school diploma and a degree in web graphic design at the same time. It opened in 2011 and closed in 2012.

Denver Harbor is a historic community located in eastern Houston, Texas, United States near the Houston Ship Channel. The community, bounded by Wallisville Road, the Union Pacific Railroad, and the Port Terminal Railroad Association, was first settled in the 1890s and platted in 1911 and 1913. The community includes many historic bungalow and cottage homes.Denver Harbor is a mostly Hispanic community.

Second Ward (also known as Segundo Barrio, Spanish for "second neighborhood", or Segundo in short; historically Das Zweiter in German) is a historical political district ward in the East End community in Houston, Texas. It was one of the four original wards of the city in the nineteenth century. The community known as the Second Ward today is roughly bounded by Buffalo Bayou to the north, Lockwood Avenue to the east, and railroad tracks to the south and west, although the City of Houston's "Super Neighborhood" program includes a section east of Lockwood. The Second Ward, which initially had a significant German American population, today has mainly Mexican American residents. Many Mexican-Americans moved into the area following World War II and the subsequent white flight from the area. The northern end of the community is largely industrial, leading to massive warehouse complexes along the Bayou. There are also many industrial buildings, some of which have found new life as lofts, on the western edge of the neighborhood nearest to Downtown and Minute Maid Park. Many buildings in the community were constructed in the 1920s and bear the art deco style. While perceived as rundown and neglected in the 1800. to 2020, recent years have seen major civic improvements including new street lights and pavement, as well as the beginnings of gentrification as professionals and others move from both the far-flung suburbs and other, more expensive Inner Loop neighborhoods. Residents of all ages frequent the Ripley House Community Center. The Second Ward is in the early stages of gentrification, drawing new residents with its proximity to downtown.

Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men (MLCPA), originally Young Men's College Preparatory Academy at E. O. Smith (YMCPA), is a university preparatory secondary school for boys in the Fifth Ward, Houston, Texas. It is a part of the Houston Independent School District. It is named after Mickey Leland. The school opened in August, 2011 for the 6th and 9th grades, and would gradually become a middle and high school. It first opened in the E.O. Smith Education Center campus in the Fifth Ward. The district modeled the school off of the Chicago Urban Prep Academy in Chicago. The school has admission requirements. It later moved to the former Crawford Elementary School, in both the Fifth Ward and in Northside.Some Fifth Ward community members expressed disappointment that the previous E.O. Smith students would be displaced by the opening of the new magnet school.The HISD board approved the renaming of the school to Leland College Preparatory Academy in 2014.HISD plans to build the permanent Leland school on the site of the former Carter Career Center, which once served as Wheatley High School and E.O. Smith. The new building will look similar to the original one.

East Early College High School (EECHS) is a secondary charter school at 220 N. Milby Street in Houston, Texas, United States with a ZIP code of 77003. The school is operated by the Houston Independent School District in association with the Houston Community College System Southeast Campus and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The school is on the HCC Southeast Campus. EECHS is a 2018 recipient of the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award.

KAMA-FM (104.9 MHz, "104.9 Latino Mix") is a commercial radio station licensed to Deer Park, Texas, and serving the Greater Houston radio market. It is owned by the Uforia Audio Network, a subsidiary of Univision, and it airs a Spanish-language CHR/Top 40 radio format. KAMA-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 10,500 watts and is a Class C2 FM station (equivalent to 50,000 watts at 500 feet). The transmitter is located on the historic 1948 KNUZ tower, along with sister station 102.9 KLTN, at 315 N. Ennis Street in the East End. The studios and offices are located in the Univision building in Uptown Houston, on the Southwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 59).

The Original Ninfa's on Navigation is a popular Mexican restaurant located at 2704 Navigation Boulevard in Houston, Texas. The restaurant serves both Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine. The Original Ninfa's was started by Ninfa Rodríguez Laurenzo, a Mexican-American woman, in a tortilla factory. Ninfa Laurenzo became a full-time restaurateur and the tortilla factory closed. Mama Ninfa is widely credited with popularizing the fajita among Houstonians. Dai Huynh of the Houston Chronicle said that the Ninfa's locations opened after the first two restaurants "failed to attract the following of earlier restaurants." Tom Laurenzo said that the Laurenzo family never became very wealthy while it controlled the Ninfa's restaurants. He said "Everything was put back into the business." When the Laurenzo family controlled the restaurant chain, it was managed by Ninfa's Inc., which became a subsidiary of the Laurenzo-controlled holding company RioStar Corp.

Talento Bilingüe de Houston (TBH, "Bilingual Theater of Houston") is a bilingual English-Spanish theater in the Second Ward in the East End, Houston, Texas. It is located at the intersection of Jensen Road and Navigation Drive, adjacent to Guadalupe Park, and two city blocks from Downtown Houston.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School (Spanish: Escuela de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a Roman Catholic K-8 school in the Second Ward in the East End, Houston, Texas. It is the parish school of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School is the oldest continuously operating Catholic elementary school in the City of Houston. As of 2010 the school's parish is one of the poorest Catholic parishes in Greater Houston.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church (Spanish: Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a Roman Catholic church located in the Second Ward in the East End, Houston, Texas. It is a part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The church, first constructed in 1911, was the first Mexican-American church in Houston. It was the first religious institution in the City of Houston to offer religious services in the Spanish language. The church opened one of the first schools for Mexican-American children and it operates programs that provided food and shelter for needy individuals. As of 2012 the church serves 3,500 families. Many of its masses are held in Spanish. The surrounding neighborhood is predominately Hispanic. As of 2010 OLG is one of the poorest Catholic parishes in Greater Houston. It includes the Our Lady of Guadalupe School, the oldest Catholic elementary school in Houston.
