RMAF Butterworth (Malay: TUDM Butterworth) is an active Air Force Station of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) situated 4.5 nautical miles (8.3 km; 5.2 mi) from Butterworth in Penang, Malaysia. It is currently home to the Headquarters Integrated Area Defence System (HQIADS), part of the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA).The airfield was originally known as RAF Station Butterworth and later as RAAF Butterworth, under the operational commands of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) respectively. Although the airfield is now a RMAF base, under the terms of the FPDA the RAAF are a co-tenant of the base, maintaining an operational presence in the region alongside the RMAF squadrons. The airfield and associated base facilities are colloquially referred to as Butterworth.

Bagan Ajam is a small town along the longest trunk road in Penang, Malaysia near Butterworth, the opposite city to George Town. It is best known for its morning market, where most residents will be, especially on weekends. Pantai Bagan Ajam is a beach here that is popular among the locals. Bagan Ajam and the whole of Butterworth have gone through changes with construction of the Butterworth Outer Ring Road. The road was completed in 2006. A Bagan Ajam rest and service area is located on the highway. This outer ring road was built very near to the sea only. Travelers can enjoy a seaview here and some cargo ships sightseeing. Bagan Ajam also has a toll plaza with 15 toll booths. There is one Touch 'n Go lane and one Smart TAG lane because Bagan Ajam is a residential area. Bagan Ajam is located 3 kilometers from Butterworth and 160 kilometres from Ipoh. The Malaysia first undersea tunnel also planned to be constructed here to shorten the hours for the people to go to Penang and Butterworth. Construction is expected to start in the 2020s. The Butterworth military airport, RMAF Butterworth, is also found there.

Chung Ling (N.T.) High School Butterworth (Cluster School of Excellence) (simplified Chinese: 北海锺灵中学 (卓越学校); traditional Chinese: 北海鍾靈中學 (卓越學校); Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Pak-hái Chong-lêng tiong-o̍h (tok-ua̍t o̍h-tn̂g); Malay: Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Ling Butterworth (Sekolah Kluster Kecemerlangan)) is a secondary school in Malaysia. The Butterworth branch of Penang Chung Ling High School was established in the year of 1986 under the initiative of its Directors Board. Following the footsteps of the main school, Chung Ling Butterworth only accepts students with good grades in their Standard Six Examination (UPSR). Chung Ling High School Butterworth is one of the handful of schools that conform to the government's policy of 60-40.

The North Seberang Perai District (Malay: Daerah Seberang Perai Utara; abbreviated: "SPU") is an administrative district on the mainland part of Penang State, Malaysia. It covers an area of 267 square kilometres, and had a population of 286,323 at the 2010 Census. The district is bordered by Muda River in the north which separates Kuala Muda district in Kedah, Kedah state border in the east which separates Kulim district, Perai River in the south which separates Central Seberang Perai and North Channel which separates Penang Island. The district capital is Kepala Batas, and the largest town is Butterworth. Other localities that are located in North Seberang Perai include Penaga, Pinang Tunggal, Bertam, Tasek Gelugor, Teluk Air Tawar and Mak Mandin. It is one of the three administrative districts in the Seberang Perai region, the mainland portion of Penang State. Paddy is largely cultivated in North Seberang Perai as most parts of it is covered by paddy fields.

Sungai Dua is a township in Butterworth, Seberang Perai, Penang, Malaysia. Not to be confuse for Sungai Dua on George Town, the Sungai Dua on Butterworth is located to the north of Perai River and to the east of the North-South Expressway. This area has experienced rapid housing development. The main road in Sungai Dua is Jalan Sungai Dua P198 which pass over the township. The exit 165 of the North-South Expressway Northern Route (Sungai Dua IC) was located near the township.

Mak Mandin is an industrial town located in Butterworth, Penang, Malaysia. There are Chinese, Tamil and National schools, a police station and also a post office.

The Port of Penang is a deepwater seaport within the Malaysian state of Penang. It consists of terminals along the Penang Strait, including five in Seberang Perai and one in George Town. The Port of Penang was the third busiest harbour in Malaysia in terms of cargo as of 2017, handling 1.52 million TEUs of cargo, as well as the busiest port-of-call within the country for cruise shipping.Established in 1786 with the founding of Penang Island as a free port by the British East India Company, the Port of Penang was originally located in the port city of George Town. Under British rule, the Port of Penang played a crucial role in Penang's economy, which largely depended on maritime trade. However, the free port status was revoked by the Malaysian federal government in 1969. The Port of Penang was then relocated to Butterworth on the mainland in 1974 to facilitate the handling of larger container vessels. Today, the Port of Penang remains the main harbour and transshipment hub of northern Malaysia.

The Battle of Penang occurred on 28 October 1914, during World War I. It was a naval action in the Strait of Malacca, in which the German cruiser SMS Emden sank two Allied warships.

Sree Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple is a Hindu temple in Bagan Luar, Penang, Malaysia. It is in fact the biggest and probably oldest Hindu temple in Butterworth. Maha Mariamman Devasthanam, a temple dedicated to the mother deity Amman, is the temple for the Hindu community that dwells along Jalan Jeti Lama. The area within the vicinity is a Hindu settlement called Kampung Benggali. Today, there is still a substantial Hindu population living in the area, and businesses such as the Sri Ananda Bharvan Banana Leaf Restaurant is a reflection of the Hindu presence. The Hindus are mostly associated with the Butterworth port. They either worked directly there, or provided supporting trades such as opening sundry shop and food outlets. The Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple is noted for its impressive gopuram which towers over the buildings in the vicinity.

The Fort Cornwallis Lighthouse (Malay: Rumah Api Kota Cornwallis) is a lighthouse in Fort Cornwallis, George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It is currently under the management of the Maritime Authority of Malaysia.

The Cenotaph also known as Penang War Memorial, is a cenotaph located at the Esplanade in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The site of the Cenopath is situated at the shoreline of the Esplanade, at Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah (at a section of street also known as The Esplanade) and Jalan Padang Kota Lama (Esplanade Road), by the padang (open field) and the City Hall that it fronts. The present Cenotaph is a 1948 reconstruction of the original built in 1929.

The Seri Rambai is a seventeenth-century Dutch cannon displayed at Fort Cornwallis in George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest bronze gun in Malaysia, a fertility symbol and the subject of legends and prophecy. The cannon's history in the Malacca Straits began in the early 1600s, when Dutch East India Company officers gave it to the Sultan of Johor in return for trading concessions. In 1613, the Sultanate of Aceh attacked and destroyed Johor, captured the sultan, and took Seri Rambai to Aceh. Near the end of the eighteenth century the cannon was sent by Aceh to Selangor and mounted next to one of the town's hilltop forts. In 1871, the British colonial government launched an attack on the town in retaliation to a pirate attack, destroying the forts and confiscating the Seri Rambai. The gun was originally displayed at George Town's Esplanade; in the 1950s it was moved to Fort Cornwallis.
