Charles City is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charles City County, Virginia, United States. It is the county seat of Charles City County. The population as of the 2020 census was 104.The community is centered on the Charles City County Court House, from which it takes its variant names Charles City Court House and Charles City Courthouse. Charles City lies at the intersection of State Routes 5 and 155. It is 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Richmond, 17 miles (27 km) east of Hopewell, 23 miles (37 km) west of Williamsburg, and about 2 miles (3 km) north of the James River.

Nance-Major House and Store is a historic home and country store located across from the Charles City County Courthouse at Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia. The Nance-Major Store was built about 1872, and is a two-story, three-bay, gable-front frame building, supported by a brick pier foundation. The Nance-Major House was built about 1869, and is an L-shaped, 2+1⁄2-story, post-and-beam-frame dwelling covered with painted horizontal weatherboard. It has a steeply pitched, front-gabled roof and features a two-story, three-bay, full-width porch. Also located on the property are a contributing smokehouse, a grain barn, a tool shed, and a garage. The store was in operation from 1874 until 1963.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Belle Air Plantation is an estate located on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia, United States. It is located along State Route 5, a scenic byway which runs between the independent cities of Richmond and Williamsburg. Belle Air is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Charles City County is a county located in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. The county is situated southeast of Richmond and west of Jamestown. It is bounded on the south by the James River and on the east by the Chickahominy River. The area that would become Charles City County was first established as "Charles Cittie" by the Virginia Company in 1619. It was one of the first four "boroughs" of Virginia, and was named in honor of Prince Charles, who would later become King Charles I of England. After Virginia became a royal colony, the borough was changed to "Charles City Shire" in 1634, as one of the five original Shires of Virginia. It acquired the present name of Charles City County in 1643. In the 21st century, Charles City County is part of the Greater Richmond Region of the state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 6,773; it is still relatively rural and one of smaller counties in Virginia by population. Its county seat is the community of Charles City.Notable natives include the 9th and 10th presidents of the United States, William Henry Harrison and John Tyler.

Glebe of Westover Parish is a historic home located near Ruthville, Charles City County, Virginia. It built about 1745, as a 1+1⁄2-story, five-bay brick building, with an early 19th-century rear ell. It reflects Colonial and Federal style design elements. It also has an early 20th-century, one-story, frame wing. It was built as a glebe house for Westover Parish. The house was sold into private hands after the 1807 act of the General Assembly requiring the sale of all Virginia glebes.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Greenway Plantation is a wood-frame, 1+1⁄2-story plantation house in Charles City County, Virginia. Historic Route 5 and the Virginia Capital Trail bikeway, both of which connect Williamsburg and Richmond pass to slightly south of this private home. Located just west of the county seat Charles City Courthouse, Virginia, Greenway is one of Charles City's earliest and most distinctive Colonial plantations. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Other Virginia historic sites built in the same era and with similar names are considerably west: Greenway Court, Virginia, built in 1747 and mostly demolished in the 1830s, now in Clarke County (which had been the seat of Lord Fairfax, who inherited the Northern Neck Propriety and was an employer and friend of George Washington and the only British nobleman to live in Virginia during the American Revolutionary War), and Greenway (Madison Mills, Virginia) a house built circa 1780 for Francis Madison, the brother of President James Madison.

Ruthville is an unincorporated community in Charles City County, Virginia, United States. The community was the central point of the county's free African American population for many years, even before the Civil War (1861–1865). Following Emancipation, the crossroads community included the Mercantile Cooperative Company and Ruthville Training School. The United Sorghum Growers Club also met here. Earlier known by several other names, the name "Ruthville" recalls local resident Ruth Brown. Her name was selected when the Post Office was established there in 1880.

Woodburn, also known as Woodbourne, is a historic plantation house located near Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia. The house was built about 1815 by John Tyler, who later served as tenth President of the United States. The Palladian house is a three-part frame structure consisting of a tall, two-story, three-bay central section with a gable-end facade and flanking chimneys, and two, low one-story, one-bay wings. Also on the property are a contributing one-story frame office (c. 1830) and an original smokehouse. The Woodburn property was purchased by John Tyler in 1813. He resided there until 1821, and sold the property to his brother Wat H. Tyler in 1831. During his residence at Woodburn, he served as Congressman.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Upper Weyanoke is a historic plantation house close to Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia. The property contains a one-and-a-half-story cottage built in about 1815, and a larger two-story Greek Revival style residence erected in 1858–59. The cottage was probably built by John Minge as a two-room dependency to a now-vanished main dwelling. The main house was built for Robert Douthat, and is a two-story brick dwelling with a side-hall plan typically utilized in urban homes, rather than rural plantation houses.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
