Old Courthouse (Buena Vista, Virginia)

Buena Vista ( BEW-nə-VIS-tə) is an independent city located in the Blue Ridge Mountains region of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,641. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the independent cities of Buena Vista and Lexington, along with surrounding Rockbridge County, for statistical purposes. The city is located approximately 39 miles northwest of Lynchburg and 56 miles northeast of Roanoke.

Buena Vista Downtown Historic District is a national historic district located at Buena Vista, Virginia. The district encompasses 38 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure in the central business district of Buena Vista. The buildings are primarily one- and two-story masonry structures, with the earliest built in 1889–1890. Notable buildings include the Buena Vista Post Office (1930), Buena Vista War Memorial Building (1954), Peoples Bank of Buena Vista (1907), Dickinson Building (c. 1907), Royer's Restaurant (c. 1940), the Advocate Building (1889), Buena Vista Masonic Building (c. 1910), and the Valley Steam Laundry Building (c. 1905). The Buena Vista Company Building (1890) is separately listed as the Old Courthouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Southern Seminary Main Building, originally known as the Hotel Buena Vista and now Main Hall of Southern Virginia University, is a historic hotel building located at Buena Vista, Virginia. It was built in 1890, and is a 3 1/2-story, brick and frame building in an eclectic combination of Queen Anne and French Renaissance style architecture. It features a steep slate covered gable roof, round towers with conical and domical roofs, three-level wooden galleries, and Palladian windows. By 1907, the building was known as the Southern Seminary Main Building, after consolidation of three campuses of that school.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Southern Virginia University (SVU) is a private liberal arts college in Buena Vista, Virginia. The college, though not officially affiliated with a particular faith, embraces the values of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). It was founded in 1867 as a school for girls and is now a private four-year coeducational institution. The Carnegie Classification categorizes it as a very small baccalaureate-only college with an arts & sciences focus.

W. N. Seay House is a historic home located at Buena Vista, Virginia. It was built in 1889, and is a two-story, weatherboarded balloon-frame Late Victorian style dwelling. It features a highly decorated, one-story, three-bay porch with turned, bracketed posts and jig-sawn balustrade. Also on the property is a garage/utility building (c. 1900) with board-and-batten siding. It was built by William Nelson Seay (1850–1939), who helped found Buena Vista.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Glen Maury, also known as the Paxton Place and Elisha Paxton's house, is a historic home located in Rockbridge County, Virginia, near the independent city of Buena Vista. It was built between 1829 and 1832, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, brick dwelling. It sits on a high basement, made of native stone, and has a two-story rear ell addition. The front facade features a somewhat crude, two-story, Doric order Classical Revival portico with paired columns. The river side is dominated by a five-bay, two-story verandah with turned wooden posts and simple brackets. It was added about 1900.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Buena Vista Colored School is a historic school building for African American children located at Buena Vista, Virginia. It was built in 1914, and expanded in 1926. It is a one-story, brick structure with a hipped, sheet metal roof. Also on the property is a contributing brick outbuilding once used to store wood and coal. The building served as the only local school for African American children in grades 1–7 from 1914 to 1957. The Buena Vista Colored School Historical Society was organized in 2002 to restore the school as a museum and community center.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Knight Stadium is a 1,000-seat multi-purpose stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia. It is home to the Southern Virginia University Knights football, soccer, and lacrosse teams.

The South River is a 20.3-mile-long (32.7 km) tributary of the Maury River in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is part of the James River watershed. It rises southwest of Lofton in Augusta County, Virginia, near the western base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and quickly receives the Saint Marys River coming out of the mountains from the east. Entering Rockbridge County near the village of Vesuvius, the South River continues to flow southwest and joins the Maury River between Lexington and Buena Vista.

Cedar Hill, also known as Cress Farm, is a historic home and farm located near Buena Vista, Rockbridge County, Virginia. The Federal style dwelling was built about 1821. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Locust Hill is a historic home located near Mechanicsville in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The house was built in 1826, and is a two-story, three bay, Federal style brick dwelling. It has a side gable roof and interior end chimneys. The interior was damaged by fire in the 1850s and much of the woodwork was replaced with Greek Revival forms. A Greek Revival style front porch dates from the same period. The property also includes the contributing "slave quarters," a double pen log corn crib, and two frame sheds.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
