Velvet Nation was a gay dance event that took place at the Nation nightclub, formerly known as The Capitol Ballroom, located at 1015 Half Street, SE in Washington, D.C. The party name was derived from the venue name and "Velvet", an ode to the gay community. This event was hosted weekly on Saturday nights, 388 times over seven years, serving more than 741,000 patrons. The event ended when Nation closed on July 16, 2006. The club was forced to close because of eminent domain, and the land is now part of the redevelopment program being spurred by the new Nationals Park baseball stadium in the Navy Yard/Near Southeast neighborhood.Velvet Nation was created and operated by John Guggenmos and Ed Bailey. For many years, it hosted circuit event DJs and talents such as Junior Vasquez, Victor Calderone, The Pet Shop Boys, k.d. lang, and The Village People. It was also known for its theme events such as Madonnarama, a night of all Madonna music and video, and its foam parties. In Fall 2007, Bailey and Guggenmos opened the follow-up to Velvet Nation, Town Danceboutique, a two-story, 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) gay nightclub in Northwest D.C.

Friendship Baptist Church is a Baptist church located in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It was originally known as Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. Organized in 1875, the church is one of Washington, D.C.'s oldest African-American congregations.

Art Whino is an art gallery at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Its primary objective has been to provide exposure to artists of the Lowbrow art movement (also sometimes referred to as Pop Surrealism and Newbrow) since its inception in 2007. The gallery space has exhibitions featuring talent from across the U.S. and abroad, as well as publications and specialty toy merchandise pertinent to Newbrow culture and related underground art movements. Art Whino avidly participates in the Washington, D.C. art scene, and other national art events such as Art Basel in Miami and New York Comic Con.

William Syphax School, now known as Syphax Village, is a historic former school building in the Southwest Quadrant of Washington, D.C. that now houses condominiums. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Credit Union National Association, commonly known as CUNA (pronounced "Cue-Nuh"), is a national trade association for both state- and federally chartered credit unions located in the United States. CUNA provides member credit unions with trade association services, such as lobbying, regulatory advocacy, professional development, and professional services management. The organization operates out of its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and an operations center in Madison, Wisconsin. CUNA's president and chief executive officer Jim Nussle has led the organization since September 2014.It was founded at a meeting in Estes Park, Colorado as a replacement for the Credit Union National Extension Bureau. The first director was Roy F. Bergengren.

The Capitol Power Plant is a fossil-fuel burning power plant which provides steam and chilled water for the United States Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress and 19 other buildings in the Capitol Complex. Located at 25 E St SE in southeast Washington, D.C., it is the only coal-burning power plant in the District of Columbia, though it mostly uses natural gas. The plant has been serving the Capitol since 1910, and is under the administration of the Architect of the Capitol (see 2 U.S.C. § 2162). Though it was originally built to supply the Capitol complex with electricity as well, the plant has not produced electricity for the Capitol since 1952. Electricity generation is now handled by the same power grid and local electrical utility (Pepco) that serves the rest of metropolitan Washington.According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the facility released 118,851 tons of carbon dioxide in 2007. In 2009, it switched to using natural gas, unless coal was needed for backup capacity. In 2013, it was announced that the Capitol Power Plant would add a Cogeneration Plant to the CPP that will use natural gas in a combustion turbine in order to efficiently generate both electricity and heat for steam, thus further reducing emissions. A 7.5 megawatt cogeneration facility was completed at the CPP in 2018.

Onyx on First is a high-rise building located in the United States capital of Washington, D.C. The 260 unit building was developed by the Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund. Demolition of the original buildings in the location began in September 2006 and construction began on October 31, 2006. It was completed in August 2008 and move-in began October 2009.The building rises 130 feet (40 m), with 14 stories and 4 below-grade parking levels. The building is an apartment complex with 266 units.

Navy Yard–Ballpark is a Washington Metro station in Washington, D.C., on the Green Line. The station is located in the Navy Yard/Near Southeast neighborhood of Southeast, with entrances on M Street at Half Street and New Jersey Avenue.

Waterfront Tower is a condominium building in the Southwest area of Washington, D.C. It was designed by architect I. M. Pei in the 1960s, as part of the Southwest Washington Urban Renewal Plan. Located at 1101 3rd Street SW, the building is similar in construction to Pei's work for the Kips Bay residences in New York City, which were built during the same era. The building was refurbished and remodeled in late 2009 by developers The Bernstein Companies, using sustainable building practices, sustainable and renewable materials, and high-efficiency lighting and heating systems. There are 123 condominiums within the building ranging from studios to two-bedroom units. The mural in the lobby was designed specifically for the building by youth non-profit arts association Arts on the Block.

Town Center East is an apartment complex in the Southwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., built in 1960–1961. The twin apartment buildings are across the street from Town Center West; both developments are part of the Town Center Plaza mixed-use development. Town Center East, as well as the plaza as a whole, was designed by I.M. Pei on behalf of William Zeckendorf, who worked with the firm Webb and Knapp.The development of Town Center East was part of a broader redevelopment of Southwest Washington, D.C. that included the construction of L'Enfant Plaza. The city's Redevelopment Land Agency had awarded Zeckendorf an exclusive-rights agreement to redevelop Southwest in 1954, and in 1956 the original plans were developed. The plan changed significantly in the following years, due in part to operational difficulties at Webb and Knapp, and the plan for a more grandiose development was scaled back to the two apartment complexes and one building of the retail center, the retail center not being built until the early 1970s.Town Center East was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 15, 2014.
