Skierniewice

Gmina Skierniewice is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Skierniewice County, Łódź Voivodeship, in central Poland. Its seat is the town of Skierniewice, although the town is not part of the territory of the gmina. The gmina covers an area of 131.67 square kilometres (50.8 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 6,736.

Skierniewice County (Polish: powiat skierniewicki) is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Łódź Voivodeship, central Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat is the city of Skierniewice, although the city is not part of the county (it constitutes a separate city county); there are no towns within the county. The county covers an area of 756.12 square kilometres (291.9 sq mi). As of 2006 its total population is 37,779.

Skierniewice Voivodeship (Polish: województwo skierniewickie) was a unit of administrative division and local government in Poland from 1975 to 1998, superseded by Łódź Voivodeship and Masovian Voivodeship. Its capital city was Skierniewice.

The State School of Higher Vocational Education in Skierniewice (pl. Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa w Skierniewicach) is a vocational university founded on 1 October 2005, on the strength of the Ministers’ Council's resolution date of 27 September 2005 (Dz.U. vol.190, paragraph 1605) and offers BS or BA degree (licencjat).

The Roundhouse in Skierniewice (Polish: Parowozownia Skierniewice) was built in 1845 and used until 1991. Currently the Polish Association of Railway Enthusiasts (PSMK) runs a museum exhibition here.

Skierniewice railway station is a railway station serving Skierniewice in Łódź Voivodeship, Poland. It is classed as a regional station on the classification of Polish railway stations and is served by Koleje Mazowieckie, which runs services from Skierniewice to Warszawa Wschodnia, and Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna which runs services to Warsaw, Łowicz and Łódź. It was built as part of the second stage of the Warsaw–Vienna railway which opened in 1845. The station building was built in 1875, burnt 1914 and was rebuilt by architect Jan Heurich in the English Gothic style with neoclassical interior.
