The commercial center of Ashton lies at the junction of Route 108 (Ashton Road) and New Hampshire Avenue (Route 650). The etymology of Ashton is unclear, as some longtime residents claim that it comes from reference to a large ash tree that stood at the junction of routes 108 and 650. Others have stated that it is a portmanteau of the names of two Thomas family homes, Ashland and Clifton, each located one mile from the junction.The United States Census Bureau combines Ashton with the nearby community of Sandy Spring to form the census-designated place of Ashton-Sandy Spring, and all census data are tabulated for this combined entity.

The Sandy Spring Friends Meetinghouse is a historic building located at Sandy Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland. It is a large, Flemish bond brick, Federal-style Quaker Meeting House built in 1817. The meetinghouse is on two acres deeded by James Brooke in the 1750s, for the use of the Quaker Meeting. Nearby is the cemetery where he and many of his descendants were buried.In the mid-1900s a community house was built adjacent, "where first day school" classes and "young friends" meet. The weekly meeting (congregation) was also essential in the formation of Sandy Spring Friends School, and Friends House (an assisted living community), both built nearby on Norwood Road. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Brinklow is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. Brinklow is located on Maryland Route 650, 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of Olney. Brinklow has a post office with ZIP code 20862. It is located within the Ashton-Sandy Spring census-designated place for statistical purposes. The community was named by Hallie Lea, a storekeeper in the late 1880s, most likely for Brinklow in Warwickshire, England.

Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) is a progressive, coeducational, college preparatory Quaker school serving students from preschool (age three) through 12th grade. SSFS offers an optional 5- and 7- day boarding program in the Middle School and Upper School. 59% of its student body identifies as students of color, and 19 countries are represented in its boarding program. Founded in 1961, its motto is "Let Your Lives Speak" an old Quaker adage which expresses the school's philosophy of "educating all aspects of a person so that their life—in all of its facets—can reveal the unique strengths within." SSFS sits on a pastoral 140-acre campus in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland, approximately midway between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. SSFS is under the care of the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting and the Baltimore Yearly Meeting.

Ashton-Sandy Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The CDP is designated to include the two unincorporated communities of Ashton and Sandy Spring, as well as the smaller community of Brinklow. It had a population of 5,746 as of the 2020 census.

The Rachel Carson Greenway is a planned 25-mile stretch of trails, spanning from the historic Adelphi Mill in Prince George's County north through eastern Montgomery County, Maryland to Patuxent River State Park, and incorporating existing Northwest Branch trails. The greenway was proposed as part of a 1998 Countywide Park Trails Plan. A plan for the greenway was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on June 15, 2005.The Rachel Carson Greenway would include a set of three existing trails, including the Northwest Branch trail in Silver Spring, Woodlawn Manor trails in Sandy Spring and Rachel Carson Conservation Park trails near Laytonsville. The Northwest Branch Trail Corridor was officially renamed as the Rachel Carson Greenway on March 20, 2004. The largest section of the greenway consists of a network of unimproved hiking trails through the Northwest Branch stream valley gorge in Burnt Mills, Maryland. A Sandy Spring Heritage Trail is being considered as part of the greenway trail system. In 2008, Montgomery County approved plans to extend the Rock Creek Park trail system north to Rachel Carson Conservation Park and connect with the Rachel Carson Greenway.

Norwood is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, located at the intersection of Layhill Road (MD 182), Norwood Road (also MD 182), and Ednor Road, two miles from the Intercounty Connector (ICC). Norwood was named Holland's Corner at one time from a store opened circa 1860 by James Holland. In 1889, Holland became the first postmaster of the town, which was renamed Norwood around the same time. The Red Door Country Store, at the corner of Norwood Road and Ednor Road, was a general store owned by Marie E. Smith that had a scale on which farmers weighed their grain. The store also served as a post office after the closure of the post office in nearby Ednor, Maryland. Norwood as a toponym is largely unused and this lack of use gained local prominence due to the use of "Norwood" as one of two "key destinations" listed on signs for the Layhill Road interchange on the ICC (Exit 10).

Clifton is a historic home located at Ednor, Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is a 1+1⁄2-story gambrel-roofed brick structure with a lower north wing, also with a gambrel roof. Outbuildings on the property include a wood-frame shed and a guest house or cottage. It is one of the few extant mid-18th-century buildings in Montgomery County and is associated with the local Quaker community, which by 1753 had been organized into the Sandy Spring Meeting of Friends.Clifton was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Ednor is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States.Ednor had a school as early as 1893 and a post office as early as 1895.

It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. Operated under the sponsorship of the Xaverian Brothers, Our Lady of Good Counsel serves students grades nine through twelve.
