CFG Bank Arena

The "Henry Fite House", located on West Baltimore Street (then known as Market Street), between South Sharp and North Liberty Streets (also later known as Hopkins Place), in Baltimore, Maryland, was the meeting site of the Second Continental Congress from December 20, 1776, until February 22, 1777.Built as an inn and tavern around 1770 in the Georgian architectural style in red brick with white wood trim by Henry Fite (1722–1789), the building became known as "Congress Hall" when it briefly served as the new nation's seat of government in 1776–77. Later, following the Revolutionary War, it became known locally as "Old Congress Hall". The structure was destroyed during the Great Baltimore Fire of February 7–8, 1904, which started nearby.

The Great Baltimore Fire raged in Baltimore, Maryland from Sunday, February 7, to Monday, February 8, 1904. More than 1,500 buildings were completely leveled, and some 1,000 severely damaged, bringing property loss from the disaster to an estimated $100 million. 1,231 firefighters helped bring the blaze under control, both professional paid truck and engine companies from the Baltimore City Fire Department (B.C.F.D.) and volunteers from the surrounding counties and outlying towns of Maryland, as well as out-of-state units that arrived on the major railroads. It destroyed much of central Baltimore, including over 1,500 buildings covering an area of some 140 acres (57 ha). From North Howard Street in the west and southwest, the flames spread north through the retail shopping area as far as Fayette Street and began moving eastward, pushed along by the prevailing winds. Narrowly missing the new 1900 Circuit Courthouse (now Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Courthouse), fire passed the historic Battle Monument Square from 1815 to 1827 at North Calvert Street, and the quarter-century-old Baltimore City Hall (of 1875) on Holliday Street; and finally spread further east to the Jones Falls stream which divided the downtown business district from the old East Baltimore tightly-packed residential neighborhoods of Jonestown (also known as Old Town) and newly named "Little Italy". The fire's wide swath burned as far south as the wharves and piers lining the north side of the old "Basin" (today's "Inner Harbor") of the Northwest Branch of the Baltimore Harbor and Patapsco River facing along Pratt Street. It is considered historically the third worst conflagration in an American city, surpassed only by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Other major urban disasters that were comparable (but not fires) were the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and most recently, Hurricane Katrina that hit New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico coast in August 2005. One reason for the fire's long duration involved the lack of national standards in firefighting equipment. Despite fire engines from nearby cities (such as Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. as well as units from New York City, Virginia, Wilmington, and Atlantic City) responding with horse-drawn pumpers, wagons and other related equipment (primitive by modern-day standards, but only steam engines were motorized in that era) carried by the railroads on flat cars and in box cars, many were unable to help since their hose couplings could not fit Baltimore's fire hydrants. Much of the destroyed area was rebuilt in relatively short order, and the city adopted a building code, stressing fireproof materials. Perhaps the greatest legacy of the fire was the impetus it gave to efforts to standardize firefighting equipment in the United States, especially hose couplings.

The Maryland Theater was a music venue in Baltimore, Maryland, home to that city's first jazz band, led by John Ridgely. It was originally built for James Lawrence Kernan (1838-1912) as a vaudeville house, in 1903, adjacent to his Hotel Kernan (later renamed the Congress Hotel). It included a rathskeller in the basement with some of the first music in town from a "jazz band" led by John Ridgley, at what became known later as "The Marble Bar", a musical venue even up to the 1980s. Located facing West Franklin Street, between North Paca Street and west of North Howard Street, which was one of the fanciest hotels in the city at the time constructed of Beaux Arts/Classical Revival style architecture. Unfortunately, in the 1950s, the old Maryland Theatre was razed and temporarily replaced by a parking lot for the last days of the hotel. Kernan was also a member of the city's Board of Park Commissioners and a member of the old Baltimore City Jail Board. He was also the founder of the James Lawrence Kernan Hospital at his "Radnor Park" estate in northwest Baltimore's Forest Park neighborhood near Woodlawn in suburban Baltimore County. The hospital built in the 1920s era with buildings around the old mansion of 1860-1867 construction of Greek Revival and Colonial Revival styled architecture. Today it is a part of the state's University of Maryland Medical Center as the "University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute". The old Kernan/Congress Hotel was renovated and restored in 2004-2005 as apartments and condos by the locally famous architect and construction firm, Streuver Brothers, Eccles and Rouse as one of their last renewal projects of three decades in the city.

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is a division of the state government of Maryland in the United States. The agency oversees public school districts, which are 24 local school systems—one for each of Maryland's 23 counties plus one for Baltimore City. Maryland has more than 1,400 public schools in 24 public school systems, with a 2019 enrollment of approximately 900,000. Of the student body, 42% are on FARMS (i.e., qualify for Free And Reduced Meals) and 22% are Title 1 (i.e., schools with high percentages of poor children).MSDE is led by the State Superintendent of Schools and receives guidance from the Maryland State Board of Education. The agency is headquartered in downtown Baltimore at 200 West Baltimore Street (off North Liberty Street/Hopkins Place, just west of Charles Center) in the Nancy Grasmick Building.

The Howard Street Tunnel fire (also known as the Baltimore Freight Rail Crash) was a 60-car CSX Transportation freight train derailment that occurred in the Howard Street Tunnel, a freight through-route tunnel under Howard Street in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 18, 2001. The derailment sparked a chemical fire that raged for five or six days and virtually shut down the downtown area. In the evening of the first day, a water main ruptured causing significant flooding in the streets above. The accident disrupted Northeast Corridor rail service. It also slowed Internet service in the US for several hours due to the destruction of a cable passing through the tunnel.

Johnston Building was a historic wholesale building located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States designed by Jackson C. Gott. It is a five-story loft building constructed in 1880. The cast iron façade reflected the influence of the Queen Anne style. It housed wholesale companies dealing in tobacco, hats, shoes, clothing, and home and office furnishings, including Samuel Hecht, Jr. & Sons. It was demolished in 2002.Johnston Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Rombro Building is a historic loft building located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a six-story loft building constructed in 1881, and designed as a double warehouse. The first floor storefronts feature brick, stone, terra cotta, and cast iron framing and reflects the Queen Anne style in its facade organization and detailing.Rombro Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Faust Brothers Building, also known as the Trading Post, is a historic retail building located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a five-story brick commercial building with a cast-iron façade above an altered storefront, erected about 1875. It is the only known example of cast-iron fronts on the front and back sides.The Faust Brothers Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It is included within the Baltimore National Heritage Area.

Mercantile Deposit and Trust, also known as 2 Hopkins Plaza, 10 Hopkins Plaza, and 2Hopkins, are historic buildings located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. They are significant as a competition-winning design that was part of an influential urban renewal plan known as the Charles Center Master Plan. This was Parcel 12 of that plan. The Modernist buildings were designed in 1965 by the local architectural firm of Peterson & Brickbauer and constructed by Emery Roth & Sons. The two separate structures are part of the same office complex. Built on a shared plaza, they are a 22-story office tower known as 2 Hopkins Plaza and a three-story pavilion known as 10 Hopkins Plaza. The office building rises to a height of 315 feet (96 m). It is one of the first reinforced concrete high-rise office buildings in Maryland.The buildings were renovated in 2017 and have been converted into apartments known as 2Hopkins. They were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

African Academy, the first permanent school in Baltimore, Maryland for African Americans. It was located at 112–116 Sharp Street, between Lombard and Pratt.There was an initial attempt to operate the African Academy beginning in 1797, when a group of black Methodists received support from the Maryland Society for the Abolition of Slavery, specifically involving Elisha Tyson and his brother Jesse Tyson. The school and meetinghouse was opened on what is now Saratoga Street (previously Fish Street), but after a few months they were forced to leave the building due to insufficient funds. The meetinghouse congregation was affiliated with the Lovely Lane Meeting House until 1802.Having acquired sufficient funds, the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the African Academy were established on Sharp Street in 1802 by the Colored Methodist Society, at which time the congregation separated from the Lovely Lane Meeting House. Daniel Coker, who was the school headmaster until 1817, established the Bethel Charity School in 1807. It was sponsored by the Colored Methodist Society. Children from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. attended the school. In 1817, Coker became the pastor of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Saratoga Street, east of Holliday Street, and operated the school at that location. By the 1820s, there were 150 students in attendance.Daniel Coker, a founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, was also the lead teacher of the congregation until 1817. In 1860, a new church was built on the same site. A Gothic style church, named the Sharp Street Memorial United Methodist Church and Community House, was built on Dolphin and Etting Streets in 1898.

250 West Pratt Street is a highrise building located in Baltimore, Maryland. The building stands at 360 feet (110 meters), containing 24 floors. The building was constructed and completed in 1986, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP., and originally developed by and for Cabot, Cabot & Forbes. The building is located in the center of Baltimore's central commercial district, and is the building most visible from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. In early 2015 Danish jewelry maker Pandora Jewelry moved 600 employees and its regional headquarters for the Americas to the building. As part of a ten-year lease, the company's logo will be added to the building, visible from the street and from Camden Yards.
