Messina Centrale railway station (Italian: Stazione di Messina Centrale or Messina Centrale) is the main railway station of the Italian city of Messina in Sicily. As Palermo Centrale, Catania Centrale and Syracuse it is one of the most important stations of its region. It is owned by the Ferrovie dello Stato, the national rail company of Italy.

Giampilieri Station is a railway station on the Messina-Syracuse line. It serves the town of Giampilieri Marina, a hamlet in the municipality of Messina. The double track from Messina to Syracuse terminates here and then resumes from Fiumefreddo di Sicilia to Catania.

The Messina tramway (Italian: Tranvia di Messina) is a tramway forming part of the public transport system in Messina, a city and comune in the region of Sicily, Italy. In operation since 2003, the tramway is 7.7 km (4.8 mi) long, and comprises one line, linking Gazzi with Annunziata.

LaFenice (The Phoenix) is a public sculpture by the Architecture and Vision design team, Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler, sited in the Piazza della Memoria of the waterfront in Messina, Sicily in Italy. The sculpture for this memorial square was selected in a city-sponsored competition as part of a larger urban renewal project started in 2003 to revitalize the public spaces between buildings built in the 1930s along the quay. The sculpture was unveiled on June 23, 2011.

The Battle of Messana in 264 BC was the first military clash between the Roman Republic and Carthage. It marked the start of the First Punic War. In that period, and after the recent successes in southern Italy, Sicily became of increasing strategic importance to Rome.

The Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani (Italian: Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani) is a church in Messina, Sicily Italy. It is an example of Norman architecture in Sicily. The church dates from the 12th century, when Sicily was under Norman rule. Built on top of the ruins of an older temple dedicated to Neptune, the church is an example of Sicilian Norman architecture with its mix of different cultural elements. The church displays influences from Arab and Byzantine architecture and also contains Roman elements. Particularly the apse is unusually well-preserved. Previously known as "Annunziata di Castellammare" on account of its proximity to an homonymous medieval fortress which guarded the inlet of the port and shipyard, its later established name derives from merchants from Catalonia who established a presence in Messina in the 16th century.It is one of the few structures to have survived the catastrophic earthquake in 1908 which destroyed most of Messina. As a result of the earthquake the church is situated 3 metres below the reconstructed street level.

Messina Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Messina; Basilica Cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Messina, Sicily. Formerly the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Messina, it became in 1986 the archiepiscopal seat of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. In June 1947 Pope Pius XII granted it the status of a minor basilica. Built by the Normans, it was consecrated in 1197 by the Archbishop Berardo. Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor and Constance I of Sicily were present to witness the ceremony. The current building is the final result of some twentieth-century reconstructions, which took place following the disastrous earthquake that struck Messina in 1908 and the considerable damage that resulted from the heavy aerial bombardment in World War II.Only the perimeter walls, the Gothic portal and an apse remained standing after the catastrophic earthquake which also destroyed surrounding edifices in Piazza Duomo. In 1943 incendiary bombs fell on the restored roof destroying much of its interior. Only an original mosaic and statue survived. The tower houses the Messina astronomical clock, the largest astronomical clock in the world.

The astronomical clock of Messina is an astronomical clock constructed by the Ungerer Company of Strasbourg in 1933. It is built into the campanile of Messina Cathedral. The mechanism was designed by Frédéric Klinghammer, with the artistic design based on plans by Théodore Ungerer. Parts of the design are similar to the Strasbourg astronomical clock. The idea was to restore the ancient astronomical clock of the old medieval bell tower of the cathedral of Messina, destroyed in previous eras. It was commissioned by the Archbishop of Messina (Angelo Paino) to mark the reconstruction of the campanile after the 1908 Messina earthquake, perhaps on inspiration of Pope Pius XI, who gave him a functioning model of the Strasbourg clock.The clock's displays appear in several different levels of the campanile, on the sides facing the square and the cathedral.

Messina ( mess-EE-nə, US also miss-, Italian: [mesˈsiːna] ; Sicilian: Missina [mɪsˈsiːna]) is a harbour city and the capital of the Italian Metropolitan City of Messina. It is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, and the 13th largest city in Italy, with a population of more than 218,000 inhabitants in the city proper and about 650,000 in the Metropolitan City. It is located near the northeast corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina and it is an important access terminal to Calabria region, Villa San Giovanni, Reggio Calabria on the mainland. According to Eurostat the FUA of the metropolitan area of Messina has, in 2014, 277,584 inhabitants. The city's main resources are its seaports (commercial and military shipyards), cruise tourism, commerce, and agriculture (wine production and cultivating lemons, oranges, mandarin oranges, and olives). The city has been a Roman Catholic Archdiocese and Archimandrite seat since 1548 and is home to a locally important international fair. The city has the University of Messina, founded in 1548 by Ignatius of Loyola.

Jesuit College, Messina (Italian: Collegio dei gesuiti), with the adjacent church of San Giovanni Battista of the Society of Jesus had been an important building complex in the city of Messina, Sicily, Italy. It was destroyed by the 1908 earthquake.

Port of Messina (Italian: Porto di Messina) is a port serving Messina, Sicily, Italy. The port has seen a significant growth in traffic in the 21st century, and is now one of the largest and most important in the Mediterranean for cruise ships, growing from 260,000 passengers in 2006 to 405,000 in 2009. The port opens on the western shore of the Strait of Messina, and is made up of a large inlet of the natural harbour, that borders an area of around 820,000 m². The port areas, however, only occupy about 50 hectares. The harbour entrance in the northwest is about 400 meters wide, and the average depth of the basin (about 100 meters from the docks) is 40 meters. This allows for the access and docking of large ships. The docks are equipped with both fixed and mobile cranes, and are linked by rail through Messina Centrale and Messina Marittima railway stations.The Port Authority of Messina (Autorità Portuale di Messina) operates the port. In 2016 the Port Authority was criticised by the European Court of Justice for the procedures followed when letting a waste management services contract for handling waste and cargo residues on ships. The authority had excluded a suitable company from the possibility of being awarded the contract because the company had not paid a fee said to be due to the Supervisory Authority on Public Procurement (AVCP). The need to pay the fee was not mentioned in the contract documents and the legal provision underlying this fee applied expressly to public works contracts and not service contracts. The "broad interpretation" of the law in Italian practice and national administrative case law was held to be a matter which non-Italian companies could not be expected to be aware of and therefore the undisclosed requirement to pay the fee was held to be discriminatory and non-transparent.
